OK Folks. First off, this post is not being put under and LJ-Cut because I want your attention.

Do I have it? Good.

Second off? I'm disabling comments. So don't bother. If you want to contact me, the e-mail will be at the end of the post.

Third off... What the hell happened today to this beautiful community we all share?

I've read all the posts and comments that have been posted today, as well as having the very interesting and deleted posts read to me over the phone on my drive home from work today.

Now, I understand you all are not liking the karma of the angry mod posts. Honestly? Neither do Mo nor I like having a reason to post them in the first place. Sadly, this is one of the bad sides of running a community, and that is having to enforce our own rules.

That said. This is going to be my last time telling you to respect the rules of this community. It says right on the profile page for all new members to read the community rules. They are very simple, and I'm going to explain them for you now, so that we're all on the same page.

1. DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE NANO WEBSITE ON THIS BOARD.

The reason we have this rule? Is because when the website crashes, everyone and their mother wants to talk about it. In their own individual post. In every community they belong to. And yes, I'm serious, because I've watched it happen. This rule was tested out last year in this community as in 2005 we had 138 individual posts in one day on the website crashing, each with anywhere from 2-15 comments in it commiserating on the fact. The community responded with praise and appreciation, therefore it stays.

NaNo has grown in popularity every year, and in so Chris Baty never has the server strength to support the new surge. He's working on it. But the site is going to crash at various points at various times for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours during NaNo. First week of October. Last 2 days of October. First 5 of November, last 5 of November.

Do you want to see that on your friends list? Thought not. That is why we delete these posts. Sometimes we're nice and ask you to remove it yourself. From now on, we will instantly delete after telling you why. Repeat offenders will be banned from the community.

2. Word Counts and excerpts go into the daily threads.

We're averaging about, oh, 30-50 exceprts a day in the daily thread, same for word counts. Do you want 50 more posts in your FL a day, or 2? We have been doing THIS since 2004 (this community has been around since 2001, FYI). Again, if it's not there, we WILL delete it. Repeat offenders banned. End of story.

ALSO - sneaking your word count into a post about another topic is NOT cool. You will be warned to remove it and given ten minutes to do so. If you do NOT remove it, your post will be deleted, no matter how many comments about your topic/question you have. So do not try to get around the rules this way.

3. The AIM chatroom nanosprints is run by [livejournal.com profile] ramdonomo. That is final. She spends time during her day away from her NaNo, son, and family to do this for you. For a few hours a day. EVERY DAY. If she asks me to do them, then I'M in charge. Only MODS will run this chat room. No if's, and's or but's about it. And what we say goes in that room, and the sprints start and stop on our watches. No one else. Want further explination of the rules? Ask Mo. She posts them every day.

4. DISRESPECTING THE MODS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. NEITHER WILL BLATANT DISREGARDING OF COMMUNITY RULES.

At this point, I'm about ready to instantly ban any single person who berates a mod in my community. We are adults, and I expect you to act like it. You treat everyone in this community as you would want yourself treated. Mods included.

Mo and I are doing this in our free time while working on our own Nano's, and various things in our personal lives that we're not going to discuss because it's our personal lives. However, with that, do you really think we need to deal with the drama that is being brought to our community? Therefore, and this is my word as group owner - You disrespect the mod, you are gone. You disrespect the community - you are gone. I refuse to have us, and the rest of this community, deal with these types of posts on their friendslists anymore.

And this rule - extends to our AIM chatroom as well. Disrespecting there will result in you being kicked out of the chatroom, and community if we are able to trace your AIM name to your account.

Lastly, three more notes. One... just because we're strict on some topics, doesn't mean that we go after everyone. Today we had a wonderful person post a website about exercises to do while writing. Another asking about people who've written dark topics and their take. Another looking for music and poetic inspiration. Saying that we moderate everything that is posted is obviously mistaken. However, if it falls into something that is mentioned in our rules as belonging to a thread, then we will follow our rules that we created for you and that every single member in this group agrees to when saying that they want to join the community.

Two... Mo mentioned an "evolution" of the rules next year in jest, and honestly, these rules will not change, and here's why. This group works well on it's own, and we have been working since 2001 to do so. What we have works, and we have been told so by the community in a much larger ratio than the few who complain. If you do not like it, you have other options. There are message boards. There are multiple other LJ communities, as well as those in IJ, GJ, MySpace, etc so forth to infinity and beyond. If you do not like these rules, feel that myself and my moderators are too strict... then go play somewhere else. We are not keeping you here, and really, if you don't like a place, then why would you stay there?

The other is this. NaNo is an fun event. There is no money to be won. Mo and I? We're so not getting paid for this. You're not putting out money to write in this. We're all just a group of people looking to have some fun, let our creative juices flow, and support one another. That said, I'm tired of watching my mods get bashed for doing the jobs that they have volunteered to do, for me, and for you. And I LOVE seeing the community not only supporting one another, but even taking steps to help us in guiding the new people in the community along the way in how to be a member properly.

This is now November 4th. We have 26 more days to go. I do not want to have to post ANYTHING like this again. I do not want to see MO have to post anything like she's had to today EVER again. And for that, I expect all of us to work together as a community, and not bicker about how you don't like the playground.

This community? Is MY house. Perhaps you think it's a bit shabby, but you're here, and these are MY RULES. Get it? Got it. Gooood.

Need further clarification? E-mail me at AlisonSky21@gmail.com. I will respond in due time, but it's already past 1am EST for me, and I worked a full day, so I'm tired and would like to write a bit in my own NaNo before I go to bed.

FOLKS! Please... for my sanity and the love of your fellow LJ'ers...

READ THE COMMUNITY RULES WHEN YOU JOIN THIS COMMUNITY. The link is right in the profile to the list of rules posts. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS PAGE TO JOIN A COMMUNITY, SO THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

That should be the norm for ANY community you join.

I know NaNo starts tomorrow. I know we're all excited. There has been a HUGE group of people that joined this group today. And the ninja squirrels have been busy, but seriously...

Introductions go in the daily intro post. (I will keep it going until the end of the week to pick up stragglers/late joiners)

Requests for help on plots go in the plot help section.

Anything else I do not mind as long is it's not a pointless "omg I'm so excited" type. Asking for help on resourses, widgets, etc... yes, that's fine and I even encourage it, but please also take a moment to just read the previous posts in the community so see if it's already been asked and answered before you post your request!

Mo might have her hammer, but I'm the one with the professional swordfighting training here. Don't make me go postal... because then there won't be a nice mod :)

One Week until NaNo starts! Are you freaking out yet? don't worry, I am!

So come on, you've got just a bit of time left to say hello while people still will pay attention and not be focused on their own NaNo.

*~*

Looking for LJ people in your area?! The Regional Meet and Chat thread is STILL GOING!!!! Click Here and go find some people in your area who you can sneak into their kitchens for chocolate mid-November!

And don't forget! Need help with a plot? Want to see what others are writing and help them out of tricky situations? GO HERE and take a look at what your fellow LJ'ers are doing!

It's the new, cool thing. I promise.

Also, please take a moment and review the List of Rules of the community.

And lastly, I've added two tags: 2007: icons and 2007: resources. Please feel free to use these tags if you post an entry that falls into the topics. If you've already posted one, you can go back and edit your entry to add the tag. I will be adding them to the profile soon as well.

Also finally... please any entry over 300 words long, please use an LJ cut.

Thanks!

For anyone who is new to the community... PLEASE, like any group that you join, you have to read the rules as so you know how to interact in the community.

There are rules in this group too. And they are clearly stated on the profile page, which everyone would have to be on to join the community for posting access.

In this profile, you have the following information:

LJ Cuts are your friend and mine... )

In November we start a whole new set of rules as we start to include the Daily Word Count posts and the Daily Excerpt posts. We're working on redoing the layout and such for November 1st as well, and ALL THE RULES and tag links will be listed in the sidebar.

PLEASE... please... not just for me and the mods, but all your fellow community members, take a look at these BEFORE you start posting in this community. I hate deleting posts because it's not fair to you, but if I leave it, then what is the purpose of having rules?

I know this community is strict in October and November, but this is how it's been run for years and it WORKS. Ok? So please help me be able to help you and make this an enjoyable experience for all.

Thank you.

Hey all. I've noticed a trend that walks a tight wire, and since this community is for the members, I want to make it right by you.

Every year, many people make comments that combine an introduction of themselves to a community as well as a cry out for help in a plot. I hate having to delete these posts, but in the years (yes, YEARS) I've been in charge, the daily post system for introductions (and word counts and daily snipits and such) works well because otherwise your Friends Lists are flooded in October and November with posts and many people defriend many NaNo communities because of this.

But if I let a post that starts out with an introduction stand, then it basically goes against my own rules and can cause problems as well. But I know the person is asking for help in the same post...

SO. I have a poll up and I would like to hear everyone's opinions. Would you be interested in having a daily or weekly Plot Brainstorming/Help post go up? Please respond, and if you have comments to add for discussion, please do so.

Poll closes on Thursday 10/18/07.

Hey folks...

like any community... we got rules here. Please read them if you are new and this is your first time joining.

Please also read them if you are one of the MANY people who I have written replies and deleted posts of.

And in case anyone forgot... once again...

RULE #1 - NO POSTING ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE WEBSITE!!!!!

I do apologize for the lack of daily introduction posts, and I will get back on track of those by posting the one for 10/6 after I finish this one.

Yes, my dear friends, it is. And you will notice that things will be changing in the next week on this board in order to spiffy the place up. So just ignore the ninja squirrels currently in aprons with Swiffers (tm) running about. Long as you don't step on their tails or steal their nuts, you'll be fine.

Anyway, yey! Less than 30 days. And you know what that means... rush of new victims New members signing up! So welcome everyone that comes in here wondering what the hell we are all about.

Now, here are the October Rules (yes, they change in November. Trust me, you'll appreciate it) and no, I'm not LJ-cutting for this... sorry.

1. NO TALKING ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE NANO WEBSITE!

2. Introduce yourself in the daily introduction posts. You will be able to find them with the tag 2007: Intro. Yes, it will go active after this post is done. If there is not one up by 2pm EST, someone may feel free to start it (include the tag please).

3. Last year this worked well, so we shall do it again. There will be a post following this that is a regional post. Rules for how to work the post will be in the post. You will be able to find it linked in the profile and sidebar soon. Or you can click here

4. NO SPAM. From October to December, we run a no spam rule. Please do not advertise your e-zines, indie publishing companies, etc. Once Nano is over, you may do so then. There will, however, be a pimping post in which nano-related writing communities can pimp themselves. however, they must stay in these posts.

Now... onto something new. We have a wonderful volunteer [livejournal.com profile] age who will be running daily writing excercises in October to gear you up and get the brain running. Please make her feel welcome, and follow her rules. We've given her a squirrel with a cricket bat to help assist with rowdy folks, and he's planning on going pro.

Finally... if you have any questions, please feel free to put a reply in here for your mods - who, for the record, as of now are: [livejournal.com profile] ceci2176, [livejournal.com profile] merissa_hino, [livejournal.com profile] ramdonomo, and myself.

Enjoy!
