The Hot and Gorgeous Club

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out my story but I'm stuck at a very important plot point and I could use some help.

My story involves the Hot and Gorgeous Club, which are a group of young and attractive people who are the crem-de-la-crem (can't spell :P) of society and likes everything to be posh. Joining the club is invitation only (the process is described in the novel). In my story, the MC gets invited to this club, and he gets into trouble when his friend writes an article about young adults' buying power using the name "Hot and Gorgeous Club", not knowing such a club exists. The other members accuse him of breaching secrecy (the only way you know about the club is if you join it) and tell him to get rid of his friend.

I need a reason for them to be secretive. So far I have that they have somewhat illegal dealings with the retailers they frequent, but I need more ideas. Anything?

I think the fact that it is so posh is enough. Having the entire thing be secret makes it ultra exclusive.

More reasons: these people have strong influences over the school and the town. They blackmail and have earned themselves special privledges and lots of power.

I don't know . . . what else?

a. they don't need a reason, except that it makes them beel better about themselves (see: greek life).

b. they are the body hosts for other worldly little space critters

c. they have tapped into the school's computer and they get all the quizzes in advance, and have the answer key to the SAT.

Reasons for secrecy... to keep it exclusive, would be my first instinct. If you can only be invited to join, and an oath of secrecy is part of the process, then the members can keep the membership as homogeneous as they like (based on gender, race, religion, profession, school affiliation, belonging to the "old money" set, etc.).

Influence peddling and powermongering would also work. Might help if there was an overall goal for the group, so that the powermongering had some distinct purpose.

Sounds pretty cool, whichever way you go with it.

I think the concept sounds like a lot of fun to work with... are you going to refer to them as "The Hot and Gorgeous Club"? Or is that just your name for it... seems they'd have a name a little more discreet ;)

They want to be exclusive and if everyone knew about it, they would all be begging for an incitation to join. Unless you want them to be into something illegal, that would be a simple way to deal with that. If you do want to go the illicit route, you could range anywhere new members having to break into a member's parents' house and steal something to having it be some sort of sexual thing.

Price-fixing.
Political funkiness (power behind the thrones and all)
Sexual stuff (prostitution, adultery, kink, orgies)
Occasional murder (conspiracy to commit same)
Dangerous initiation rites
