2011 Rules

Starting now November rules for [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo officially kick in. Read this post or the community info for a list of them!

Welcome to the National Novel Writer's Month community here on Livejournal! Created back in 2001, and under management of [livejournal.com profile] jupitersings and [livejournal.com profile] writingvixen, this is the longest running NaNo community on LJ!

Rules | Introduction Posts | Daily Word Count | Daily Excerpts | Plot Help | Pimping Thread

ALL NEW MEMBERS: There are two things you need to do before posting:

1. Read the Community Rules.

2. Take a few minutes to read through previous posts. You may find the answer to your question already! (There will be a FAQ's coming Soon)

Community Rules

#1... NO TALKING ABOUT THE NANO WEBSITE. There are countless other communities out there to discuss the website, as well as a twitter if you cannot access the site. http://twitter.com/nanowrimo

#2... INTRODUCTIONS ARE DONE IN THE DAILY INTRO POSTS. - This rule goes on until November 5th, when at that time the vast majority should have introduced themselves. This also means that posts that go on for length about yourself and your project should be contained to your own journal once these posts end on the 5th. Introduction posts will begin next week.

#3... RESPECT - Especially the mods and our rules. ;)

#4... NO SPAM - If you went to post to the community, it needs to be a contribution, or a question. Icons, things to help people along, something you found online that has been helping keep you motivated. Posting about your project with nothing more than self promotion will be seen as spam and deleted, with a comment to use the pimping thread for that.

#5... POSTING OF INDIVIDUAL WORD COUNTS IS NOT PERMITTED. As with the handy dandy Intro posts, there will be Daily Word Count threads. You can reply there with your meters, your text counts, your frustrations with your falling behind and only have 35 words written on November 16th, etc.
EXCEPTION TO RULE #5 - When you DO hit your 50K, you are allowed to post your victory in your own individual post. Why, you ask? Because I believe that everyone deserves their 15 minutes of glory, and you've had to put up with consolidated posts for 2 months, so SOMETHING has to be for individual shining.

#6... EXCERPTS POSTS - If you'd like to post an excerpt for your story please do it in one of our Daily Excerpt Posts. The only exception to this is the Plot Help thread.

#7... ADVERTISING - Advertising other writing communities or NaNo AIM rooms or anything outside this community either needs to be in the pimping thread OR approved by the mods.

And as always, the rules are subject to change due to the needs of the community and the mod.

So what are you waiting for? Come on in and get writing already!

Yay!
I'm so excited...but also scared this year cause I'm much less organized this time...I'm still trying to nail down the name of my antagonist! Still a week to go though, so here's hoping!

Good luck everyone!

The first rule of NaNoWriMo Club is don't talk about NaNoWriMo Club.

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Is it okay to mention in a longer post or comment that, say, I snagged a dare from the dares thread on the NaNo forums or learned about a cool writing program from the NaNo forums?

I'm a bit curious about why that rule is in place, since a lot of us will inevitably be frequenting both that NaNo site and this community? Just don't want to overstep any boundaries!

We'll have an FAQ posted soon on why.
But the main reason is that we don't want this community to turn in to
"The website isn't loading for me. Does anyone else have this problem?"
"How do I do this on the website?"
"The new layout sucks/rocks."
Because it can at times clutter the community up. We know that most of the members use both, but we want to keep this one as focused on writing as we can, not on what is going on on the website.

With that said, however, if you have a post discussing your writing or plot and have a question or something and it happens to involve a dare, or writing program that you found out about on the website, that is fine. And mentioning the website in a comment isn't forbidden, just making posts entirely for it.

Why not make the rule "no posts entirely about the website" since the way it is now makes it seem like we absolutely cannot even talk about the website when we can.

I think that sharing the links should be allowed if asked. They would be allowed to share links for other writing sites that they got inspiration from, and it's not necessarily taking away from anything in this community. Though with that said, I agree that saying, "Here's a link to the plot idea forum" is not allowed since that is blatantly advertising it, and we will have a specific post for advertisements. If someone needs plot help they are more than welcome to make a post here and ask for help, that is, after-all, what we are here for.

One question referring the rule about the NaNo site, which I think is a great rule for the record -- I was thinking of making a post where people can reply with their novel synopsis and get it read and critiqued. There seemed to be some interest in that idea. Would that be okay, or a total no, or fine if I have everyone copy and paste instead of linking to the website? Or will there be an official place to put that later?

Anyway, thanks for this post. You guys do a great job of running this thing!
