Yeah, it's belated, but I'm a busy chica. Here's the EotD, partially inspired by the fact that I walked by a conversation at, probably, just the right time earlier today :)

"Uh... Gwen my love, I am not going to apologize for writing... anymore than I would apologize for this missing foot... and in truth the one led to the other. When I could no longer follow the profession of arms, I had to do something to eat. I wasn't trained for anything else and back home some other kid had my paper route. But writing is a legal way of avoiding work without actually stealing and one that doesn't take any talent or training. But writing is antisocial. It's as solitary as masturbation. Disturb the writer when he is in the throes of creation and he is likely to turn and bite right to the bone... and not even know that he's doing it. As writers' wives and husbands often learn to their horror. And - attend me carefully Gwen! - there is no way that writers can be tamed and rendered civilized. Or even cured. In a household with more than one person, of which one is a writer, the only solution known to science is to provide the patient with an isolation room, where he can endure the acute stages in private, and where food can be poked in to him with a stick. Because, if you disturb the patient at such times, he may break into tears or become violent. Or he may not hear you at all... and, if you shake him at this stage, he bites."

What's on your list of things which absolutely must be done by 11:59pm, October 31st 2004 to ensure you a (less painful) NaNoWriMo experience?

1.) Have the house somewhat clean so I can find my muses.
2.) Have the freezer FILLED with frozen dinner, slow-cooked items, popcicles, etc for when I forget to purchase groceries.
3.) Register at http://www.nanowrimo.org
4.) Have already contacted my Municiple Liason, if applicable.
5.) Have my relavant links bookmarked and in a folder where I can find them easily when mentally blocked.
6.) Let people know where I'll be for 30 days, so the police don't have to perform a wellfare check and interrupt me during The Best Part.
7.) ...?

I'm just curious. How do you guys manage to figure out what you're going to write for this? I'm still trying to figure out a story idea... should I be worried I'm not as organized on this NaNovel? What should I worry at this point?

I'm a potential first-timer looking forward to this challenge. I planned and started novels when I was much younger and more inspired to be a writer, but could never get passed the first chapter.... and now I'm unsure of what to do for this NaNo Novel...

Any helpful suggestions on a first NaNo Novel? So far, I have only two ideas:
(1) something about job hunting (cuz I'm currently enduring the pains of trying to find a full-time job after graduating from university, and I tend to write better when I base off my life);
(2) something about four guys with magical powers fighting evil in their normal daily lives just after graduating university, and confused about what to do after university (which I have more detailed ideas, but I feel it's so overdone).

Help?

All right he's a singer, but it works.

My friend asked me, "What happens when a movie star meets a girl working at a taco stand?"

The result... )

I must say, writing excersizes are really helping me cope with the wait for the site to re-open much better than I coped last year. *Jitter* But gosh-darnit!!! I can't remember my password to my Word-Counter!

list of things which absolutely must be done by 11:59pm, October 31st 2004:
*Get all ecology papers done (1 down currently, 2 to go)
*Get Chem homework As done through the end of the semester (cause finals are the second week of December, and I'll still have set B and postlabs to deal with anyway, no avoiding those)
*Get chem prelabs done for rest of the semester
*Get repro research paper done
*Get memoir project done for english (25 pages (roughly 23k words)that won't count towards my November word count, ergo are being my October wordcount.)
*uninstall all the games on this computer that I can, so I won't be tempted by them.
*Stock up on Coffee/caffine related stuff
*Spend some time with friends so they won't feel so bad when I ignore them for a month
*Fix laptop battery so can use that to write out in the courtyard/in class even though it's ya know a good 20lbs or so, saves me having to type it all up later.
*Breathe, eat, and sleep.
*crossposted to my journal too*

Hello all!

This is unrelated to NaNo, but very much related to writing. And since we're all writers here, it seemed the best place to ask! Also, the forums on the nano site are down, so that wasn't an option.

I'm looking very much into getting a Master's Degree in Writing, specifically looking at schools in England (I live in the states). Has anyone else gotten a degree like this? If so, what's your advice? What do you do now that you have it? Is it worth getting, or will it really just be me in the same job-less position with a bigger pile of school loans to pay off?

Another degree I'm looking at is in Publishing Studies--do you think that would be more worthwhile for me?

If anyone knows about particular schools in England, too, I'm looking at Kingston University, Univ. of Manchester, and Univ. of Liverpool (Science Studies MA, which sounds just too cool to not apply for).

Thank you!

Any advice for a newbie?

Well, this year is my first year doing Nanowrimo. I found out about it around the 12th of November last year, and since it was my last year of highschool and I tons to do, I wasn't even willing to try and make the deadline and vowed to do it the following year. Luckily this year's come around and I'm in my first year of university...doesn't seem like too much work too far, so I'm going to try my hand at it.

I've got a plot, it's actually the first book in a series of four (because I can't just write small things, no...everything has to be an epic for some reason) and it's the typical fantasy quest thing. I'm hoping to liven it up with original twists here and there, and the actual items that they're collecting are new (I haven't seen them in books/games before as the main target, unlike gems or souls or keys *coughKingdomHeartscough*) so I hope that'll help.

As for October (aside from papers I have to do), I'm going to spend the month fleshing out the world I plan on using for my story. Now, the world's been created for a few years...I just need to change things a bit and add details. Technically there are four stories that should come before the quartet I want to write...and only the first one is even started (yay 56 pages that needs ot be completely rewritten). Is it bad to start something in the middle? George Lucas proves yes -.o but I hope I can do it well anyway since I have the first four stories written in my head before the quartet even starts. They take place a couple hundred years apart anyway, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Anywho, November calls for writing, midterms, essays, and my keeping-up on the webcomic I write/colour/code for *sigh* So hopefully I'll be able to make the deadline *nod*

So! If anyone has suggestions or requests I'll see what I can do.

So hi. I mostly just lurk here, quietly doing the 5-minute exercises on my own, but I figured I'd pop by to say hello. I'm doing epic fantasy this year, which should be fun. I'm melydia on the nano site, btw. Since everybody else is doing it, here's my to-do list for October:

1. Write story for [livejournal.com profile] wackyfics challenge (and encourage others to join up for one last hurrah before November)
2. Sign up at nanowrimo.org
3. Retain interest in a novel idea, any novel idea at all (I say this because I've gone through a few stages of being gung-ho about certain ideas and then losing momentum. Fleshed out another one this week that I'll probably do, but four weeks is a long time...)
4. Figure out how much traveling I'll have to do for November (so far it's only one week, but that will probably increase)
5. Enjoy my favorite season while it lasts

Hope y'all are having a grand week and good luck with the last month of anticipation!

Does anyone have the link?

OMG i'm so excited. i came up with the ending for my novel. i have a beginning, a few middle bits (not so important i can make those up as i go along!) and an ending! OMG now i guess i'll have to start on characters, i haven't done the whole planning thing before.

do you need to research anything for what you're writing?

i need to research heavy metal in the 80's and zombies (ok not so much in the zombie department, thats more for fun, i already know well enough to write about them).

i don't really need to research the metal either, cos i could always save myself the effort and make them punks, but once again, but the idea of metalheads being attacked by zombies amuses me.

do you need to research anything for what you're writing?

i need to research heavy metal in the 80's and zombies (ok not so much in the zombie department, thats more for fun, i already know well enough to write about them).

i don't really need to research the metal either, cos i could always save myself the effort and make them punks, but once again, but the idea of metalheads being attacked by zombies amuses me.
