I'm introducing myself as so many others have. I've never written anything, ever. Except, well, I do write in my blog. I saw [personal profile] aisling did it last year and I was intrigued.

This is a HUGE and scarey undertaking. My husband thinks I'm crazy. I think I'm crazy. I don't know the first thing about writing.

Growining up, Again

Write on the subject for five minutes, then post the results in a comment on this post.

There is also a community set up, that I've been meaning to mention: [livejournal.com profile] eotd.

I’ve held off introducing myself for a while. I’m a first time NaNoer and also listed as ohsochewy on the forums. I excel at writing within prescribed limits, such as contests involving silly poetry in ridiculously structured forms, but mostly I’m a victim of my own too-critical eye and my distaste for pretension, so I don’t write seriously (in any sense of the word) unless forced. (By trade I’m an editor and proofreader.) Currently I work at a large university with a computer sitting in front of me and lots of down time, so I think happily typing away will be great for looking busy :) I am just getting through the last dregs of a very busy musical season—I am a singer, and this weekend we’re performing a giant opera, which means the end of two solid months of rehearsals almost every night. Phew! So writing during November will be a good brain activity that lets me sit quietly and take breaks when I want to for a change. I am looking forward to it.

I have some nagging things on my mind as October wears down:

I want to write a Plain Old Novel. Anyone else not into fantasy? Read more... )

I am torn between Plain Old Novel and mystery.Read more... )

I am stuck in the middle between these two ideas. The pain, the pain!

The BBC News has an article mentioning 101 words introduced over the past 101 years. They "are inviting you to create a story of 150 words maximum using as many of the words from the list as possible." Cheers.

OK, OK, I finally get it -- even though I started out writing early. I just got so excited.

Here's my chapter outline (roughly -- it's all up for grabs) and plot. Help Me! I need feedback!

“Chasing Alessandro Safina” is a novel about obsession, restlessness and the search for more meaning and deeper life experiences. When the story opens, 26-year-old American Isabel Cahill is in a bedroom in Siena, Italy’s most medieval town. Something is amiss. Her eyes are wild, her thoughts strange and she’s clearly gone as she rubs olive oil into her skin in an attempt to “be more Italian.” Only this will open the secrets of joy and true living she believes she hears in the voice of Alessandro Safina, a young opera singer whose star is on the rise.

Chapter 2: Isabel chases Safina all over Europe, attending his concerts to learn what she thinks he knows about passionate living. This is her attempt to banish her own suburban upbringing, which Isabel views as mediocre and superficial. She has little money and goes to great lengths to get into the concerts. We see what brought her here in the first place.

Chapter 3: While refusing to answer her mother’s increasingly frantic emails, which provide some insight into Isabel’s psyche and situation, Isabel experiences Europe; she decides to spend two nights on the street so that she might afford to stay in Safina’s hotel in the next city. Drama on the streets. What does she see? Joy? Despair? What does she learn? A new character is introduced here, someone who will Read more... )

this will be my third year of NaNo...and i think i found some good plot angles...and it will most likely take place in the fantasy world i tried to build as last years novel. i was hoping that year to create a fully detailed setting for future novels..but i got caught up in my November drama (bad bad things used to happen to me in November...)and got lost and halted shy of 7000 words.

but i guess i will have to rebuild the world through this story idea i have for this year. i hope to god i get finished this year!

but anyhoo my previous attempts are at [livejournal.com profile] bridenovel and [livejournal.com profile] domsubkult.

good luck to you all and me!

A completed 50,000 word novel would be roughly what size of file in KB?

Hi, first time NaNo, thought I'd just say hi.

Mine will be called "The Replacement King" A mirthful tale of magic and mayhem in which a reborn King Arthur rejects his destiny.

What's Merlin to do?

Well, I've been playing around with the idea of sharing my plot bunny with you all. I've gone back and forth, and I suppose I shall share a very brief sketch.

First of all, my plot bunny came to me back in June of this year as I was driving home from my aunt's funeral. Cheery, I know. Anyway, I am a big Harry Potter fan, and within the Potterverse, I am fond of Ron Weasley. I often find myself defending him to another friend of mine who isn't *quite* as fond of him as I am. Anyway, as I thought of Ron, the plot bunny struck, bringing with it the opening line, "Every sidekick has a story. This is mine."

The story has evolved quite a bit from that point, but that was the inspiration.

So, there it is. Comments etc. are appreciated.

Well, it seems many more people really liked that last exercise (what makes a book good, or what do you like in books) than I thought would. Glad you did, though; that was the point. And thanks for all your input, since it's really helping me define my own list and figure out more of these themes. I'm afraid I didn't explain the exercise as well as I could have—limited time does that to you—but it came across well enough, I suppose. So I figure I should post the follow-up to it as well, just in case people get as much out of that as they got out of the first one.

This is your second Magna Carta. The Magna Carta's evil twin, if you will. What are some things that really get you down in books? They can be more general things (ie, Mary Sues) or a bit more specific (like best friends dying). It's basically the same thing as the previous exercise, just reversed. I hope this one gets as much participation as the other. This one is almost more fun, too: it's mean, but who doesn't like talking about terrible novels? ;)

Hi folks - if you're in the Glastonbury/Hartford area and you're interested in joining a NaNoWriMo group to write each day in November, here's a new group that's forming:

So I am not doing any writing to prepare for NaNo. It would probably be good if I did but since when do I do what would be good?

I have created a cover for my novel, it took minutes of googling followed by about 45 seconds with Photoshop to make it black and white and add some text.
