So, I am new here and thought that I would introduce myself. My name is Eric42. I originally signed up with Nanowrimo back in 2002 and promptly forgot about it. Every year since I've thought about returning but never got into it. Well, this year I've decided that I'm finally crazy enough to do it so I am forcing myself to sit and write. Force may be the wrong word to use, but it's close enough. I may even get a new journal made so I can post my progress or something like that. Anyway, I see you guys next month!

I wanted to throw out a couple of things in the post, so bear with me.

First, the problem. Horror of horrors, on this my first attempt at NaNoWriMo, I will be on the road when it starts. I will be attending the Exchange Connections conference in San Diego which kicks off the evening of October 31 and runs through November 4. This means I'll be spending my first few days of writing in a hotel room. Now, why this may seem to be a boon, having my company pay for a cushy hotel room isolated from the world that should give me the free time to get my novel well underway, it's not. It's not because I know myself, and I've tried writing fan fiction while traveling on business in the hotel room in the evening. I usually end up watching the History Channel or playing a game on my computer. Yup, you guessed it: I have no willpower. My one hope is that, when the November 1 date arrives and I unlock the cage I have my muse (for this story) in, she will tie me up the moment I enter the hotel room each day, force me down in front of my laptop and schmack my hands every time it goes for the remote control.

In an earlier post, I had floated the idea of writing my last chapter first. Upon re-reading the "No Plot? No Problem!" book again, I have decided against it. Part of the fun I seen in writing this will be to lead the entire story up to this climatic moment, and if I write it first, all the fun will be gone too early. Instead, I will force myself to write to it first, filling in all the plot necessary to get from the beginning of the book to this moment. This way, writing the climatic scene becomes a reward for sticking to a writing regimen and will allow me to experience the double-sweet joy of writing out the scene and finishing the book at about the same time.

I am so ready to begin. My muse is not taking her captivity well. One more month...

[livejournal.com profile] tijae here. [livejournal.com profile] tijaes_quill is my NaNoWriMo journal. This is my second year participating. Last year I made it only a third of the way to the goal, but as I explained to someone recently in regards to why I'm giving it another shot: "Even though I didn't make my goal last year, I look at it as I managed 17,000 words that I'd not have written without NaNo to spur me on. And since I'm not in college at the moment, I don't write nearly as much as I used to and would like to. This is my excuse to give creative writing a definitive slot in my schedule."

I intend to simply start writing without any preparation. No title, no outline, no dinstinctive character bios this time. I do have one idea that I haven't ditched yet. It's beckoning me as a challenge, but I don't know that I'll use it. I was playing with one of my cats yesterday and wondered if I'd be able to drone on for 50,000 words from a cat's perspective.

All rambling aside, hello and best of luck to all the participants!

(Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] 2005nanowrimo so please accept my apologies if you see this introduction twice.)

Does anyone remember a Microsoft Excel file that someone designed to track word count progress? I don't mean the popular "gas gauge" tracker, but the one where you'd enter your numbers for the day and it would tell you how many words you need to write every day for the rest of the month to win.

Can someone give me a link or the name of it?

Well, what with sign-ups starting today and all these other intro posts, I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon, too.

My name's Janice, I'm 19 (actually, gonna turn 20 in Nov), and a sophomore at a large university where I'm studying engineering. This'll be my second year doing NaNoWriMo. Last year, I signed up Nov. 2, but still won (thank goodness for Thanksgiving Break!). I've always enjoyed writing, but until last year, had never written so much in so little time, and I found it to be quite an exhilarating experience. In fact, at the end of November, I wasn't finished with my novel, but I had to force myself to stop writing daily because I had finals coming up and a couple of group projects that demanded my attention. But once my month long winter break hit, I pulled another NaNo of sorts and finished the novel at the end of the break with 94K words. It was my first real novel, I guess you could say--I'd written one in high school, but it was only 35K words and, in my opinion, was total crap.

For this NaNo, I was originally planning to simply continue a work-in-progress, but after seeing so many other intro posts, I figured it wouldn't be any fun, so I'll be setting that aside and starting fresh. I'm one of those writers who really needs to have some direction in order to be productive, so I do have a plot and a handful of characters ready to go. I'll do more outlining as October goes on.

About my writing, in general: I won't bore you with actual plot ideas, but my stories tend to involve high school students placed in supernatural situations with much secret-keeping to follow. This time around, I'm going to try my hand with alter-egos, as it's something I've always enjoyed in books/movies myself.

Hmm, what else...oh yes, the presents! )

Good luck to you all!

So signups start in a few hours. Thus I am very, very excited. This also provides an excellent time to do an introduction.

My name is Grace (or Ang or Angie depending on where I know you from) I'm 18 and live in the Washington, DC area. This is my third year doing NaNo and hopefully my second win. Currently my plot ideas are running around fighting over which shall be written. None of them are particuarly good, but hopefully I will have alot of fun this year.

See you lovely lads and lasses around.

Since quite a few other folks are doing introductory posts, I might as well follow the crowd. I finished ;ast year with 50,106 words but without a finished novel. I've done a bit of planning for this year's NaNo. No biggie, really, just the basic stepladder-plot one linerss going from beginning to end so at least I know where I want the story to end up. Thre's no guarantee that I will get there before the mnoth's end but I do hope it will carry me though the most important points on my way towatds the end of the story.
That's why I did a bit of reverse engineering when I wrote a basic plot outline. I wrote one sentence for the end of the story and worked my way backwards from there: This happened, and then that happened leading to this, and so forth. It's really something that you can do in about twenty minutes if you have a good idea of how things work in your story.
It's the same universe story as last years', this NaNo project, only I had to go back five hundred years, to the genesis of the antagonist. See, that's from last year, he was more nebulous before lasy year's NaNo, which I can think of as a back story to this years' only it to0ok place five hundred years after the story I paln to write this year. ♪ Skip, skip, skip to my loo ♪...

Been lurking around for weeks. I should probably introduce myself at last.

My name's Kadeen and this is my first time participating in the nano. I signed up last year at the site, but I didn't actually participate. Um... I love to write and draw and I adore anime. If you want to hear me go fangirl bring up anime or Kingdom Hearts, my all-time favorite video game.

I actually have a general idea of what I'm going to write this year. I mostly deal in "chick lit" genre. I idolize people like Meg Cabot and Lauire Halse Anderson. And I read all the time.

That's about it. Meet me. =/

All right kiddies, gather 'round the feet of Tantie Mary Sue, with all your worries and questions.

I'm here to kick you in the pants and point your head the right direction.

Here is the FWL, or Frequent Whinge List. Feel free to add whinges in the comments, and I'll edit them in.

1) OMG, I have no TIME!

I did NaNo last year while working full time, going to graduate school full time, volunteering as the youth coordinator at church, and starting my thesis. Shut your gob and write.

2) OMG, I don't know anything about [insert subject here]!

You think I'm gonna know that Samurais didn't wear Levis? Research is part of the Editorial Process. Editing is what you do in December. For now, shut it, make something up, and write.

3) OMG, I'm afraid it won't sell!

Now, see, Tantie Mary Sue don't write for the mass market. I writes for her friends, family, and the fun that is November, what with the caffeine poisoning and the all-night write-ins and Word Association. Therefore, I get to write about what I gorram want to write. On the off chance I consider showing it to a publisher, I'd probably edit it. And when do we edit, kiddies? That's right, in December. So, for now, shut it and write.

4) OMG, I'm stuck! I have writer's block!

This is why you should have read my Tips for the NaNoEr post. Because it tells you how to get around that. Now shut it, and write.

5)OMG, I'm sooo far behind!
There is exactly one day where you will know if you're behind or not, and that's Dec. 1st.
In 2003, I wrote the last 20k of my novel in Week 4. I wrote the last 7k on Nov. 30th. I uploaded it with minutes to go until midnight (I live in GMT -8). How not to be me? Shut it, and write.

6)OMG, I sneezed today! I think I'm getting sick!

Oh, good. Now when you call in sick to work and spend all day writing, you won't totally be lying. Shut it and write.

7) OMG, I have family coming in for Thanksgiving and the house is a mess!

You have two options:
1) Call your local restaurant what's open for the holiday, make reservations for your family, and tell them to meet you there. Then, lock the door, take the phone off the hook, shut it, and write.
-OR-
2) Move to any country other than the United States, shut it, and write.

Hi all--

This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo. I've written a BA thesis before, and many many poems, but nothing this long. After I graduated college in 2003, I worked at a publishing company that outsourced everyone. Now I work at 100 Book Challenge, a program that gets kids to read. Since I have never had a job that doesn't involve books, and since I am addicted to writing, I figured I'd give it a shot.

I don't have the ability to download schmancy wordcounters (though I do use that fabulous excel file) but still wanted to have a visual track of what I've done that people can follow along with. So I made a simple table:
Table is now behind a cut )

If you want to use a table like it, you are more than welcome to steal this code:
I won't even put one of those mandatory links back to me
Table code is behind cut )

Alterations on this theme include turning the scene name into a link, adding more total lines throughout to create subtotals, styling text, etc

You can play with the table to make it serve any number of functions. Like the table on my nano LJ that links to private planning posts to keep me organized in a one-stop shopping way: a modified table for planning
