broke my nanowrimo cherry.....

finally, midnight happened on the west coast, and now, 40 minutes later, I have typed 1,098 words. Must sleep now. Back at it in the morning.
[identity profile] heatherbird.livejournal.com
I haven't introduced myself, I wanted to actually commit first. Starting at midnight, I wrote 1,248 words. The rest of today's goal (2000) will come after I've had sleep and done my duties as a third-year college student. I gave MYSELF a cliffhanger I will want to get back to in order to know what happens next. I'm writing a Young Adult Chick Lit (whew!) novel, and cliffhangers at the end of chapters seem to be what the talented authors in the genre use to get me to keep reading... so that's what I'm going to use to keep writing.

My novel is about a girl, Harley, who chose to attend a small women's college in the rural Virginia town she was born in, and who is regretting that decision because she doesn't think the sheltered environment will ever allow her to "find herself." She dreams of moving to New York or Chicago, of marrying a rock star, of being a spy or a journalist instead of a speech pathologist. However, when her best friend since the seventh grade calls her in the middle of the night with an announcement that she's marrying her high school sweetheart, Harley gets pulled right back out of the clouds and back into the life she's been trying to pretend never happened. What do you thing? Any ideas/suggestions/real life experiences? My plot is inspired by my own best friend's engagement, so it'll be somewhat autobiographical, but I *DID* get the heck out of town when I got the chance.

Is anyone else NaNoing while sick? I mean afflicted or ill, not the slang usage. I'm starting to doubt my sanity even more than usual, as I have two abscessed teeth and a sinus infection and I'm still awake and at my computer trying to reach minimum word-count before I collapse into sleep. The antibiotics and painkillers have me somewhere between here and Venus, but I'm still going to get this damn novel written!

600 more words and I'll let myself sleep...

Ok, its 01:23 - I've been writing for an hour and 21 minutes (2 minutes were spent going "fuck, fuck, fuck" etc). Now I'm exhausted.

Word count: 1702.

The last 200 words were just padding and crap becaus I was too tired to think of anything to write about but I thought, I'm so close to the daily count, there's no point stopping. So I feel good, first day is done.

Good luck everyone whose hour is approaching....!

Well, it's begun.

1,231 words, and I'm going to bed.

Not too bad, and I love the fact that it's still the first all day tomorrow. LOL

Honestly, it's pretty shitty but I'm just moving through it.

Just move... move... move...

The prose are pretty much non-existant. I haven't come with any attractive or poetic ways to say or express or describe anything. It's all just....... there. But hey, at least it's somewhere other than in my head, right?

God... tired... and sick.

I WOULD come down with a cold today.

*sniffles* and goodnight!

Yes, this is the stuff I should have set up days ago and started the actual writing this morning.
So I'm late.
So sue me.
There is always my lunch break, eh?

Scenes to set up, so far:
Scenes:

1.Hal, the Intake Clerk For The Newly Dead is at his job, interviewing a series of just deceased folks.. and drawing them out for the drama of it. Not necessary.. Tram comes along every half hour to pick up those he has interviewed and will take them to their new ‘final destination’. All very systematic.
He is annoyed because he is due a coffee break for the past quarter millenium. His replacement is late.
The angel is listening to all the stories of woe and horror the newly dead tell and drawing ever nearer until finally he falls to earth, much to the amusement of Hal, who then sighs and gets back to work. Wondering where his replacement is and is he EVER getting his coffee break, here.

2.Claire’s dream. Her mother nags and nags.. follows her around as she tells her what’s wrong with her and what she should change. Uncle Bob chimes in with bugging her to get a lottery ticket, He is convinced he can pick numbers, now that he is dead. Every so often, she humors him and it never comes up.

3. The Summit is gearing up for the dinner crowd. Brewster and Mena are talking and setting up. Damon in the background; Claire running late, as usual.

I have an oddball question.

I found a word used by my Grandmother in a couple of letters she wrote in the 1940s. She used the word "Ya huti" as a nickname for her menstrual period, much as other women call it "Aunt Flo" or "The Red Flower" or "My Special Friend." There was no other language influence in her home but English so I don't think it would come from a foreign language, unless perhaps her Swedish grandmother said it.

Has anyone ever heard the word "Ya Huti" anywhere for any reason? It's very possible she just made it up; she's kinda goofy like that.

Spelling variations are quite possible. Could be Ya Hootie, Yeah Hootie, Ya Hutti, or anything else similar. Also remember this was the 1940s.

Thanks folks, and happy first day of NaNoWriMo!!!

Should I start my second novel now? That sounds good to me. 3k in one, try to get the goal in the other. I'm regretting my beautiful outline.

Help?

This is my first time doing the whole NaNoWriMo thing. I know I got no chance in heck of finishing, cause I'm taking a huge vacation RIGHT in the middle of November (Hawaii! EEE!), but I'm going to try my darnest to get really far anyway.

I'm 24 and an English Major living in Miami, Florida. I've actually done a bit of writing before, mostly one-act plays and short serial scripts akin to miniature television scripts. I eventually want to do movie scripts, but for now, I figure anything to get me writing.

In fact, I actually realized today on my way to work that I've had a plot that's absolutely perfect for this project, a little bit of cliche South Florida fiction called "Hunker Down". I'm mostly gonna be writing at work between down time and at home after work. In fact, gonna start in a minute, as soon as I settle in to my work routine (and provided the work day continues to be slow, courtesy Miss Hurricane Wilma). Wish me luck.

Anything else I should say?

Does anybody use the expert forums on the official site, and with any success? I am finding them impossible to wade through. Any suggestions or alternatives? Googling/general web searches have been less than helpful.

I am having a hard time keeping up with posts, so I apologize if I'm repeating anything. Every time I come back here to lurk, I have pages and pages to go through.

Instead of starting at midnight, I decided to start my writing this morning after a few cups of coffee. After a bolt of inspiration I wrote the prologue to my novel and managed a measley 280 words!!!!

Now I think I'm developing early-onset writers block!!!!

This is happening a bit earlier than I imagined!

I have the vague idea of doing an vaguely fictional autobiography of my life thus far sort of have the character (25 years and 1 week old) standing on the edge of a bridge about to jump and pondering how she got to that point.

Working Title: A life half lived.

But I am not sure if that falls within the rules as stated here:
How do you define "novel?" Does fan fiction count? What if I want to write interconnected short stories rather than a novel? What if my story is
largely autobiographical, or is based on a real person?
Can I still write it in November?
We define a novel as "a lengthy work of fiction." Beyond that, we let you decide whether what you're writing falls under the heading of "novel."

random question - do chapter titles count in word count? I was already planning on naming my chapters things like, "Chapter four in which the Professor is late, Jamie worries, and it all ends happily." - only not that exactly - something similar, though. I almost feel like it is cheating, though, to have that as part of the word count - but I want to do it like that anyway, and it will be a part of the document I scan in for verification ...

sorry, just stressing, and procrastinating (already)

Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] altoidsnano and my personal journal. If you'd like to watch my NaNo stuff, go ahead and join the community; if you have a NaNo journal and I haven't already joined it, let me know in comments. And good luck to all and sundry.

By way of introduction: This is my fourth NaNo year, and I hope to make it the second winning year. I succeeded the first year, but I ran out of energy/steam the previous years and petered out at the 30,000 mark. Being an ML last year also took a lot of work. This year I recognize that I don't have the time to organize everything, which is taking some of the pressure off.

Taking away precious time from NaNo is my husband/pets, full-time school, part-time work, and a music career I seem to be incapable of sabotaging even intentionally. I'm an English minor and have a major piece due towards the end of the month, so I figure I can turn in a truncated, edited version of my NaNo and kill two birds with one stone. With a grade as motivation, I think that will increase my chances of success.

Going swimmingly. I'm not putting any pressure on myself to succeed at all costs; that didn't work the past two years, and the first year (when I won) I took the laid-back approach. We'll see.

I have a beginning and an ending, and a great, plot-fitting word-inflating gimmick. My characters haven't even met face-to-face yet except at the ending. The idea - without getting too much into plot - comes from a challenge someone gave me to write a believable, un-hackneyed happy ending, and it's a lot harder than just letting everyone kill each other with flamethrowers or descending into cannibalism like I usually do.

I know I'm not alone in writing about an MC with a disability. Right? *fidgets*

My MC, Eryk, is a quadraplegic after being injured in a fight, and there are also other family members that have disabilties. I'm UnityCeci on the NaNo site, and I'll do my NaNo updates (f'locked) in [livejournal.com profile] disabilityqueen.

There's this LJ community I created, [livejournal.com profile] disabilityfic, that hasn't had that much traffic but I figured that if anyone's interested we could use it during NaNo to exchange ideas.

Good luck, everybody!

I think someone posted about this, there was no followup? I was wondering if we were going to have a daily word count post where everyone posts their wordcount in the comments rather than everyone have a separate post by each person in the middle of the day of how many words they have written...

If 30 people posts a day x 2 communities (depending how many you've joined) x 30 days = would already be 180 posts... There's 500+ people in both communities I've joined and I don't really want to take both communities off my flist unless I really have due to to them clogging my flist.

Does anyone agree with the perday word count posts or they don't really care?

Hey guys, this is just a suggestion and you can use it, ignore it, or throw rocks at me, but my friends list is totally clogged with people posting wordcounts (not that I don't care!! it's awesome to know how hard everyone is working!!) but I'd like to suggest possibly starting one "daily wordcount post" each day and everybody responding to that instead of everybody creating their own individual post.

I dunno. Just an idea. *wanders off to write some more*

Yes, well, better late than never. My name's Katharine and this is my first time writing for NaNoWriMo. It's quite daunting, but I'll try my best.

The story I'm writing is mostly fantasy, so if that's your thing, read it! Don't have a synopsis though...so you'll just have to trust me on the fantasy bit. I'll be posting all of my work onto this s/n. Any kind of constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Belated Happy Halloween!

Today is officially the start of the 2005 leg of NaNoWrimo! Of course, yours truly would be very delighted to dive headfirst into the caffeine-laden, keyboard-pounding, ramen-gobbling frenzy.

To express my unadulterated excitement for this project, I have made four [4] buttons the standard size of 80-by-15 pixels. I had searched if NaNoWriMo ones of these buttons have already been made but I was not able to find any.

Needless to say, I made my own humble ones, derived from the larger official participant icons. Feel free to download to your computer, upload to your own server and use in your sites and journals. A credit to [livejournal.com profile] xhi or Xirculo.com will be very much appreciated, but is not necessary.

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, and as I do every year, I've whipped up a couple of desktop wallpapers that are NaNoWriMo word count calendars. As usual, I've created two versions of each: one for the general population, one for those of us like myself who don't write on the Jewish sabbath.

Someone made a very useful post about “character interviews”. I thought I had bookmarked it, but I didn’t. Does anyone have a link? I really, really need to do one.

It's 4 p.m. Central time. Do you know where your NaNo-Novel is?

Umm, mine is still in my head. I haven't even started writing yet.
My daughter is kicking my hiney. She already has more than her word count for the day.
(Secretly, I'm hoping she beats me at this. I think it will be good for her!--
That's not to say I don't want to finish myself. I do. I'm just slow starting.)

What's holding me up?
Procrastination, among other things.

I wanted to stay up last night and work on it but found myself too tired to wait until midnight reared its head, so I slept instead. Now, I've finished some of my work stuffs, and it's nearly time to start supper.

Can I get more hours in my day, please? Just a few?

P.S.
Looks like the dream girl theme was the most popular in my poll. Wish me luck!

Surpassed word goal for the day, and also completed the next entry in my Professor Deviant blog. For those of you reading, enjoy.

Warning: The above blog contains sexually explicit content between two men. If this makes you uncomfortable, stay away.

I need some help with a phrase for my story..

I'm trying to describe very uncomfortable silence. I know theres specific phrases that people commonly use to describe a situation like that but for the life of me I can't think of any.

Help please?

Thanks in advance! Hope all your novels are going good!

Is anyone attempting this genre for NaNo?
I'm trying to, but my main keeps sounding like a twit who's seen too many D&D games (or just discovered expanded vocabulary).

I, like many others, decided to start writing at midnight, but I merely lasted as long as I planned. Only up to one in the morning and I hated what I wrote. Now, I know NaNoWriMo is mostly about quantity and not quality, but I somehow cannot breathe properly if my writing sucks. It's in my nature. Anyway, as I went to sleep I just cursed myself under my breath, thinking how stupid could I get...luckily, once I woke up and my mind was clear, I felt mucyh better and the words flowed easily. I already have the prologue and first chapter, which makes 5346 words. Ooooh, ten more days like this one and I'll be one happy camper!

By the way, I find it extremely difficult to upload my work onto the site. I just didn't get it (my skull thickened from all the typing probably). SO, any help? Please?

I'll give you imaginary caffeine!!!

This might be unusual.

What I'm looking for is a site where you can put in the definition, and it can provide you with a word. A centralized, focused one (unlike Google), like dictionary.com in reverse. Does anything like that even exist?

Hello! I wanted to introduce myself, as I've just joined. I'm Therinian (SAHM of 3 boys) and this is my first NaNoWriMo Challenge.

I am writing a fantasy, based on a real-life event and I'm glad I found this community, in case I have questions (or the dreaded writer's block)!

So far, I've gotten 636 words for my novel; not alot to some, but it is to me! :)

Good luck to everyone!

Last year, I got this uber nifty spreadsheet for Excel that figures out all these stats for your Nanowrimo word count. However, when I went to use it for THIS year's nano, I found that it was outdated, and therefore didn't work correctly (since it was configured for the year 2004 instead of 2005.) So I tweaked it a little bit, and here is the result if anyone would like to use it.

This is what I am working on for NaNoWriMo.  It is currently called "Georgetown."  It is a fantasy/mystery.  Think Harry Dresden/Anita Blake stories.  This is the first chapter.  Please take a look, and tell me what you think!  I am very very interested to hear what you have got to say.

It is with no small amount of pride that I announce -even on a busy day like today- that I wrote 2,587 words in this year's NaNoWriMo competition.

Why do I call it a competition?

Because I'm competing ... with myself.

I need to do this and, most of all, I'm choosing to write the novel that I have wanted to write since I was 16 or 17 years old.

I've started and stopped it many times and -over the years- it's evolved.

I honestly don't know all the twists and turns to come because, frankly, I've thought up so many, I'm not sure which ones are cannon and which are not.

The Prologue, which I just finished, is a good example: it's similar to what I've written before, but the tenor -the very feel of it- has shifted, dramatically.

I'm posting my progress over at my NaNoWriMo LiveJournal account, [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_dave, so feel free to add me as a friend so you can follow along.

My first installment is located, here.

This might sound like a silly question, but my computer is doing something with my novel document that's pissing me off, and this seems like as good a place to ask as any, since I can't find the answer on Microsoft's website.

When writing in Microsoft Word, the document will sometimes automatically indent the next paragraph when you press enter, rather than making you press tab every time you start a new paragraph. This is something I've gotten used to, as it seems to do it with all of my writing...except this time. So of course it's throwing me off.

Does anyone know what I can do to set this function into effect, or what it is that makes it do that in the first place? Help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Okay, I figured it out (and then saw [livejournal.com profile] mforbes321's comment, so I know I did it right), so my new question is this: why does it set it to that automatically sometimes, but not others? (Now I'm just curious.)

I'm not sure if it was in this community or not, but I seem to not be alone in liking My Chemical Romance and in doing NaNo. Darn it if they (and maybe too much sugar) didn't inspire some kind of comedic...thing of creativity. I'm not even sure what to call it really, but it seems to be turning out well. Anyway, even if you don't like MCR (it just won't be MCR based--it's looking like it'll have plenty of refrences to other things as well. >.>) hopefully it can make you laugh during those times of NaNo when the ideas seem intent on not coming out to purposely frustrate you. (I know that's why I'll be writing them. ^_^")

Our house was broken into this morning. Took my laptop. Thankfully, it was my old, crappy laptop. Unfortunately, it was the laptop I had all my NaNo notes/beginning 1000 or so words in. This is especially frustrating because this is the second time since September that this same group has broken into my house.

First of all, welcome to everyone who's doing Nano this year. Good luck on all of your projects, and I hope this is an experience you enjoy.

Second of all, I have a few administrative requests to make.

1. Please, please, use the official word count posts that [livejournal.com profile] alison_sky has graciously offered to post up every day. If you don't find them, please please check the memories, where I have helpfully added them under the category Word Count 2005. Try to remember to actually do this because I'm sure my nagging people about it every day for the rest of the month will irritate you all as much as it will me. :)

2. Yes. Sometimes the site is down. Hearing constantly about site glitches is almost as annoying to me as the constant repetitive word count entries, so if there are site problems I think it would be nice if someone just started the official complaining-about-the-website entry every day.

3. It's been suggested that we have an official pimp-your-journal/novel/whatever entry, and I think this is a good idea. I'll be making a post about that here in a minute which will also get memoried for ease of use.

I think that's everything I found that people were concerned about.

I've already asked [livejournal.com profile] alison_sky and her rabid squirrels to help out with community maintaining duty. If anyone else would also like to help moderate, leave a comment in this post.

And... I think that's it. Back to your regularly scheduled nanoing!

Quick summary: Nadine Sanders is a Partner, one of the few humans with the mental and physical skill required to hunt the vampires that have been taking over the world since four hundred years ago, blah diddy blah blah blah. It's 10 and I'm waay to tired to think of a decent summary. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer mixed with Sunshine, only it's about as original as I could make it without giving Bram Stoker the finger.

1406 words, today. And, to divert a bit from everyone's blubbering about stuff, I present something midly amusing: The Saga of Nicodemus and the Writer!

Nicodemus and the Writer 1 Nicodemus and the Writer 1

Nicodemus decides he wants to 'help' Our Heroine write her novel for NaNoWriMo -- National Novel Writing Month.

(Our Heroine is *not* that fat. I was just being lazy on the couch. And yes, that *is* a giant granny square on my lap.)
Nicodemus and the Writer 2 Nicodemus and the Writer 2

'Nicodemus, do you know what this is? It's a brain-sucker, starving to death!'

... Nicodemus continues 'helping' Our Heroine by looking adorable.

(Still not that fat.)
Nicodemus and the Writer 3 Nicodemus and the Writer 3

Frustrated by a large, tubby, fluffy black cat's interference with her NaNo writing, Our Heroine resorts to physical violence to get him to leave her alone and stabs him with her pen!

(No actual tubby kitties were harmed in the making of this picture. It's a *joke*, kids.)

(STILL not that fat, nor pregnant.)

(STILL not that fat, nor pregnant.)

Ahm, I just thought I'd introduce myself because I hadn't already I'm not procrastinating already really I'm not~. This is the first year I'm going to be trying NaNo, so please be gentle with me ^^... I've seen my friends attempt it for the past few years and every year I've seen the counters in their journals and been like "Wow, it's so impressive that they'd try something like that, I could never do something like that, I suck at even keeping up to date with all my fanfics and ongoing things that I already have, let alone do that" then this year I got chatting to a friend who mentioned doing it and suddenly I was on the website thinking "Why don't I give it a go? @_@" and so, two or three days before the start of NaNo, I decided to sign up ^^

I've got a plot, I've got characters, I've got the will to write... I just need to sit down and start now XD must... stop... procrastinating...
