And here's that project I was talking about a few days ago...
I started thinking about the essence behind NaNoWriMo ... that by applying strict guidelines to a project you can force it's completion and, then, make up for poor quality in after-the-fact editing. It worked out wonderfully for me, this year, and got me thinking about my accomplishments and failings in other parts of my life.
I enjoy being artistic; I have a real love of creating things and sharing them to not only make myself happy but my friends and family as well.
Keeping this in mind, I've decided to take a year and -each day- take photos of things in my life. Out of each day, I plan on selecting the best or most representative photo, of those I took, and putting it in my LiveJournal Scrapbook. At the end of one year, December 1st, 2005 - November 30th, 2006, I will have a collage -a slice-of-life look- showing one year in my life, through a creative lens. While I will occasionally post thumbnails which link to the full-sized photos in my Scrapbook, here, in my LiveJournal, all of them will be on display in the special gallery I've created, Photo-A-Day.
This is my goal: to enjoy myseld, creativly, use my camera more often, and share snippets of my journey through life with anyone who is interested.
I call this project "NaPhoDaYr" (pronounced "Na(as in "national")-fo-daa-yer" or "National Photo-per-Day Year".
Damn.
It's not as catchy as "NaNoWriMo", is it?
If you care to join me, please do so: this could be a lot of fun if more and more people decided to look at their lives through the static moments and snapshots we otherwise might forget.
Yours,
Sylvan (Dave)

Winter Wetlands Out behind where I work at Digital River, there is a vast, quiet wetland teeming with wildlife. On one occasion, during a particularily stressful day, I went for a walk to get away from my computer monitor, climbed down an embankment, and just stood at the water's edge for about ten minutes. Now that winter has come, the animals -save for a small number of non-seasonal geese- have mostly gone to hibernation or warmer climes. What's left is a white-blanketed beauty. Here, you can see a gentle slope of a creek bed, tumbling down with tall reeds and grasses sticking up, alongside the retaining wall where the parking lot ends. It's even more peaceful than before, wrapped in its blanket of white. | Hanging Out Mike Heinsohn (aka "Sorien" ... seated in the recliner) invited me over for a roast beef dinner. Lou (kneeling to the left) was there (he doesn't want his face shown) as were Mike's tenants, Anna (aka "Ataramos") and (legs only), Khirsah. The TV is on only as background noise although it was, disturbingly enough, a series of shows on the Travel Channel about the Most Haunted places on Earth. Not the thing to watch before going home to an empty house and bed... | Snowfall While only about an inch of snow was forecast, plenty ended up falling from the sky, turning my front yard in Columbia Heights into a beautiful, picturesque wonderland. I was doing a lot of cooking and cleaning while looking outside, readying for guests coming over for our bi-weekly game day (my Vanguard table-top RPG). I took photos like this in art class, years ago, and always have loved the interplay between round, soft mounts of snow and the stark, crisp, hibernating branches of nature... |
