Tonight your nanosprints will be hosted by one of our new sprint mods [livejournal.com profile] ribcage_diagram. Now featuring a later end time!

AIM ROOM: nanosprints
TIME:10pm EST/9pm CST/8pm MST/7pm PST UNTIL 1am EST/12am CST/11pm MST/10pm PST
WHAT: NaNo sprints! Write as many words as you can during the allotted time, and see how many words other people can manage.

Come and sprint in 10 minute bursts, at the :10, :30 & :50. There will be a 10 minute break between each sprint. That works out to be 30 minutes of sprinting for every hour. If you've read this post, please don't ask when the next sprint will be or how long it will run. I will give a two minute warning before each sprint.

I know the schedule might not work for everyone. If that's true for you, explore other options.

Fun fact: it is actually possible to write without sprinting.

Feel free to come in ahead of time and chat to fellow NaNo'ers.

Any questions, AIM me at 'time lord take 9'.

You can invite yourself! All you need to do is in the menu click AIM/Chat/Buddy chat. Put your name there instead and in the place of room name, put nanosprints. Easy!

Rules are same as always:

- Discuss your novel. Ask people for ideas if you're stuck.
- DON'T discuss religion, politics, lifestyle choices.
- Don't tear each other down. Not on plot choice OR word count.

please remember that while the sprints are taking place there will be no talking as it distracts from the 'stop' time. some have their chats set to blink and the blinks take away from knowing when to stop. if you are asked to stop talking, please do so immediately.

Never, ever be the first to talk in the Sprint room. There MAY be a Sprint going on.

if you live outside the U.S. and are unsure what time this is for you (or inside the U.S. and don't really have a grasp of time zones), please refer to this handy website. http://www.worldtimezone.com

First off, I'm sorry if this bothers anyone, but I really need help right now.

Alright, so I was working on my word count earlier today, when I had to stop to take my sister-in-law to a job interview. I then had the clever idea of bringing my laptop with me, so I could work out in my car while I was waiting for my sister-in-law to finish up. Low and behold, when I opened up the document, it said that nothing could be changed because the entry was locked. I've tried everything I could think of to unlock it, but it's not just that file. Anything I try to open with Microsoft word can't be changed. So right now, I'm really just happy that I decided to back up my story last night, so I've only lost about 500 words or so.

Now, the point of my story is this: does anyone know how I can unlock Microsoft word to access my files? Or, if not, do you know about an alternate program I could use that would be compatible with Windows Vista? I do have Word Pad on my laptop, which I'm going to have to use for now, but if any one could tell me a better program that at least had a spell check, that would be amazing.

Thanks for your help and patience. :)

EDIT: I managed to finally open the file in Microsoft Works Word Processor! I still don't know what's wrong with Microsoft Word 2007, but I managed to start a new program without losing any word count, which is the most important part, really. Thanks to all those who helped me! I'm really really grateful!

:)

Wednesdays are going to be the bane of NaNo this year, I swear. *oofs* Let's see if Chris can salvage the day, eh?

One of the best ways to learn to do something is to emulate those whose work you admire.

The treat (and task) for today is to drop by the bookstore and pick up a novel by an author whose voice you've always loved. Read the first few pages of your purchase before you start writing and pick out methods the writer uses to create the mood you find so appealing.

Is it the folksy vocabulary and informal writing style? The electric buzz of clipped, declarative sentences? Or the poetic, lyrical style of flowing sentences and sensual adjectives? Whatever it is, borrow the elements you love and use them throughout today's writing session.

Day 5 flashcard from the No Plot? No Problem! writing kit, the genius brainchild of Chris Baty.

While some people may be worrying about getting all 50K in before the month is out, that is the least of my worries. We're now five days into NaNo and I already have over 25K.  This should mean I'm about half-way through my story, right? If I'm lucky, than I MIGHT say that I'm a fourth of the way through. But it's probably closer to an eighth.

Does anybody else have the problem of not getting in the allocated amount of words by the 30th, but actually being able to say: 'THE END' by the time that date rolls along?

If you start working on a novel... and then decide to start over, does your previous word count... count, or do you completely start at 0 again?

I mean, yada yada, I know I could do it, and who would care? But I guess I want to do this "properly".

I'm not feeling my MC at all in my story. And the sad part is, for once I actually have motivation to keep writing, and I'm not stuck on plot details as much as I usually am. But... it's forced. I'm not having fun, and I'm 7,000 words in (yes I'm behind! That darn election!)

So I'm heavily considering starting over, on a story I have written several versions of already, a character I love very much, and have been developing for 8-9 years. I know it's not recommended to write a story you love, but I'm thinking I just need to get it over with, and consider this version a rough draft of the real thing. It will be good therapy for my perfectionist issues.

Am I completely crazy? I'm sure with this story I could catch up, cause I type incredibly fast (100+ WPM) and if I'm into the story, then I will write a LOT. But bawwwww, I want my old word count to... count too!

edit: Thanks so far for the responses! I decided to go ahead and start working on a new novel and see where it takes me. So far, I already have 1,000 words. Things are running a lot smoother. I'm still not sure about counting what I already had written. I'll see what happens. Any more input is appreciated!

Okay, I like that for a Novel Title, but as an description of what I am writing at the moment it does not invoke much happiness.

I have fallen behind a few days now because I cannot seem to move forward at a regular pace. I instead keep having scenes pop into my head for the beginning and/or end of chapters without any idea what is going the middle. Tonight I finally started to just sit down and write what was on my mind and go back later to fill in the blanks.

I know how Chapter 3 is beginning , but I have only yet written the first paragraphs of chapter 2 and now have 2 mini-stories to work into that chapter for the first paragraphs of chapter 3 to make any sense. I still only have the beginning and end of chapter one with an idea for the middle that I just can't get to work.
