Abortion

Can abortion be considered a type of surgery? I had an excerpt in my Xanga blog and one of my friends im-ed me saying that he thought abortion isn't a surgery; just a procedure. (I mention both words, "procedure" and "surgery" in my excerpt.)

Any ideas?

(oh and I HATE POETRY with a PASSION...I got an F and an "X" on my first two rough drafts ever...yay me. It's so depressing, not that I ever fooled myself thinking I was a good poet but still....)

As much as I dislike it, I've actually never thought of abortion as surgery before. As far as I know, for the most part it doesn't really involve cutting open and stitching up. So I've just never thought of it as surgery. Unless there IS a type of abortion I'm forgetting that involves having to cut and stitch that I'm forgetting. Then I would call that particular type of abortion a surgery. But not all of them.

There are different abortion procedures. Some are surgical (like D&C), others aren't (like a medical abortion).

I think some places call a vacuum aspiration abortion surgical and others don't.

Seems like a "nit" kind of thing. If you're looking to find out how people talk about abortion, what words they use to reference it, try one of the abortion support communities on LJ. You don't have to ask, you can just read.

The same procedure done, when there is no fetus present, entails putting you completely out with anesthetic. You're in recovery afterwards for the same amount of time you would be if they were doing any other type of surgery and the process leading up to it is identical as for any other surgery. Despite the lack of stitches and cutting, I'd say, yes. (I've had a D&C for other reasons than pregnancy termination. They do use it in some other situations.)

I think it would not be false to describe it as surgery. It's overtyly invasive, nessesitates sterile conditions and requires a recovery phase afterwards.

ewwwww.. i had a d&c.. after a natural abortion, not pleasant. but yes it was surgical in that they put me out to do it.

and as for poetry i love it, but only the good stuff...lol

my understanding, when i was in the RU-486 study, was that before 3 months, a regular abortion was a procedure that an RN could do.
after 3 months, it's surgery that a doctor must do.

but that definition could have changed drastically over the years.

I don't know...I'm pretty sure that when they have to go into you and rip something out, that counts as a surgery.

Aside from that, poetry isn't so bad. Just throw all concepts of it out the window, forget about structure, forget about rhyme, forget about anything and write about something you give a damn about. In fact, try writing a character's observances on something as an exercise - say, a character of yours relating a stapler obscurely to some event in her life. It can be fun. I swear.

I'm a poet playing at being a novellist with everyone telling me just how easy it is, so I thought I'd interject with my vice versa.
