What are some unconventional places (e.g., mirror) that you might write part of any story? I'm asking because I find that new places help with new ideas - wouldn't a new medium do the same?

So I decided to do NaNoWriMo this year -- have heard about it for years, felt it could be a big kick in the pants as far as being a more disciplined writer goes. It's my first time at trying it, so I find myself both hopeful and nervous.

Problem is, I actually find myself with *three* possible candidates to work on:

1. First story is the one I was originally hoping to do, a story I've been working on more or less regularly (emphasis on the more or less). It's also in a genre I'm well familiar with, but of course I've already written about 8000 words of it. So of course (as I was disappointed to find out)this is Against The Rules. Now, I could be a Rebel and just not count what I've written so far, but I have some doubts as to whether that would be a good idea for someone who has never NaNo before -- I'm trying something new and it's a tough challenge, and I'd like to able to say that I won fair and square(being optimistic here, but aren't we all)when its all done.

2. Second is an idea that's been kicking around in my brain for a while. I'm familiar with the characters I want to include and the settings it would take place in, but it would be a type of story I almost never read and am not very familiar with. It's been pointed out to me already that attempting a story in a genre I really am not at all conversant in under these conditions could be setting myself up for a really disheartening failure.

3. Third is an old story idea. I made an attempted start on it a long time ago. As in, I had forgotten all about it until I dredged up the notebook the first 1000 or so words were in while looking for something else from that era. Even that small amount needs a total rewrite -- I kept cringing while reading it. (Like I said, it was a looong time ago....) But it's in the genre I read most, and while the plot's one that's been done to death, the characters are now talking in my head and I can see where it may go plot-wise. It could technically still be cheating, although I don't think there will be hardly anything, if at all, left of the original opening once I sit down to rewrite it. But less so than #1, which would have the existing text added to whatever I wrote once NaNo was over.

Suggestions? What would you do? Am I just letting my Inner Editor & my basic insecurities run rampant, or am I right in thinking that I need to choose the one that would provide the best chance for a good experience for the newbie?

Hello everybody! Yesterday I stopped by with some icons for the community. Well today I'm back and I come with a few more gifts.

This time, I'm bringing banners. These banners can be used on any website to advertise that you are a proud member of the experiment in insanity that we affectionally refer to as NaNo. Same rules apply.

1. Don't hot link. LJ Scrapbook is available if you have an LJ account to host your images. (That's what I use.) Photobucket or Flikr are some more options.
2. Credit somewhere if you use it. :)
3. Comments are ♥. As are cases of Mountain Dew. ;) JK

The rest are below the cut. These all work 100% the best on a completely white background, ie your lj profile, which is primarily what I created these with in mind. When they're placed on a white background, you won't be able to see the white frame around it. It blends in directly to the page. :)

In my NaNo story I have this character, Nuadha, who I need to develop a good relationship with my main character. Since my main character is in her last year of school, I was thinking the maybe the best way to get the two characters together was for Nuadha to be a new student. While this might be a good way to get the two together, would it be a bit too cliche? Is there a better way for me to get the two characters together more often?

I've figured out my idea, and I have some of the scenes sketched. The thing is, I'm not sure which point of veiw to put it itn.

We have:

My MFC: who is a Jew. I was thinking of doing it as a journal type thing, but that wouldn't work for every scene.

Then we have my MMC: who is a Nazi, but defected. While portraying a Nazi to the fullest extent, he is also helping to shield a jew from being found out.

I like both my MC's alot, so it's sort of important who's POV it's in.

If you need more info, just comment.

So, I was all relaxed, planning to skip this year and spend the month laughing at my stressed out friends.  And about 10 minutes ago, a plot bunny attacked me.
Well, not really a plot bunny, more like an inspiration bunny.  I still have no idea what the actual plot is, or who the characters are.

Normally, I'd write about the villain, or the antihero, or the monsterific sidekick of the villain (Yes, I have a thing for villain stories), but for once, I think I'm tired of it.  Hah, guess I'll be spending the rest of the month trying to figure this all out, but this might actually be the first time I'll write a perfectly normal hero. >>

It's good to be back NaNo people.  xD

So, yesterday afternoon, it hit me.  We're almost halfway through october and I have nothing prepared for NaNo.  I'd been working on this idea a month or two ago, and I had planned for that to be my NaNo for this year, but I'm not so sure about it now.  I don't really know how I feel about the characters.

So all day today, I've been trying to come up with something.  A plot, a character, a shade of lipstick, anything.

Well, not exactly anything; I've been vetoing certain ideas.  Anything too comical, and anything that even remotely resembles last years NaNo for example.  Because that was an epic failure.  I reached 50000, but the plot was severely damaged.  At some point I considered rewriting my Screnzy as a novel (and to be honest, it's still my best option).

So while I was in the shower tonight, I had this brilliant idea.  And by brilliant, I mean deeply psychotic and mildly flawed, but brilliant nonetheless.  It's a parody, which I have almost no desire to write, but this one might just be too good to pass up.

Sparkly Zombies.

EDIT : After the fantastic amount of encouragement on here and a bit from a friend in the real world, I will (most likely) be writing it : )
