Today's special event was to make a cord. I wanted to take some time to break it down for you for all to understand.

In many, non western, cultures people often attach something to themselves as a tangible reminder of a promise that they have kept. In some religions and groups, a braided cord of sorts symbolizes a commitment that they have made.

During NaNoWrimo in November it's going to be very easy to forget your commitment. Real life will get in the way and life will become chaotic. You might easily forget your commitment to 50 works in a month.

That's where our cord comes in.

I want to encourage you to find some yarn and string and make a bracelet of sorts. It could be a piece of leather or a strip of fabric. It could even be a rubber band or a piece of raffia. Let your imagination guide you.

If you're crafty, braid several together. If you're not, don't. But take that piece of string/leather/fabric and tie it to your wrist. Leave it there the entire month of November. By the end of the month the strand will be nearly as battered and rough looking as your soul feels while writing your novel. Let it become a tangible, visible reminder to be on your computer or in your notebook writing. Don't remove it until December 1st, even if you quit halfway.

When others see it and comment on it, tell them about NaNo. Tell them about your goals and dreams and let it be something that helps you to be bold in sharing why you're participating in this experiment into insanity.

I'm going to take some cord tonight and make my own bracelet. It's going to be yellow and green and I'm really looking forward to it. We, as writers, need to hold ourselves accountable. No one will write this novel for you. No one will make you write it. Only you can do that for yourself. So do this as a moment to solidify the commitment and tie it to yourself. You won't regret it.
