I'm sitting at somewhere over 5,000 words short of my chosen goal for the day, but gaining slowly. (Well, now that it's Monday, 10,000, but then I'm insane.) The characters have taken over. I got a good 1,000 words out of what happened after Harry started running around campus naked.
I have to give my characters relatives, you see. It can't just be someone and just them. No. Their parents, siblings, and other relations have to show up and give them hell. It was cute with Beatrice, and Sally's turning out to be a really neat little sister, if scary as hell. It was amusing with Ben, since his parents can't stop fighting even though they're divorced. It's officially scary, with Harry. Beatrice is fairly boring, so it stands to reason she'd have a wacky sister and a fairly normal mom. Ben's a typical Divorce Kid, at least with his schedule. But Harry's just plain strange, and no little creepy. I had to make sure Harry's parents were the sort of parents who could create a child as freaky as Harry.
Turns out that Harry's mom is a rabid individualist, and therefore wouldn't have seen the need to make her child learn to conform to the social norms in public, and she shows up and gives the camp a piece of her mind for attempting to squash her baby's creativity. This, after Harry runs all over campus in the nude and eventually sets up camp on the roof to wait for the alien mothership to come and take him (as his life's in ruins around his feet and being abducted is preferable to facing the music).
Harry scares me.
