My general idea for a setting was a world in which the Houston oil refineries have been taken out of business by Another Natural Disaster™ and Saudi Arabia has been hit by Another Terrorist Attack™, leaving the US to scramble for its resources. (I live in LA and this is what happens when you get stuck in traffic too long, you start to wonder what we'd all do, if we had to get around without cars.) I don't, however, have any kind of plot beyond that I'd want it to deal with the plight of Everyman rather than the political machinations as such. I don't even have characters, but I'd rather have a father struggling to support his kids as my protagonist than the lone, strong hero who nukes China and secures their oil supply for The Good Guys™.
Normally, I have no problem coming up with crazy plots, but I've gotten it into my head that I want to write something for my wife. Like a daily 1666.67 word surprise. My dayjob keeps me very busy, so I figured if I knew why I'm writing, or rather for whom (because I'm horribly in love with my wife. Well, not 'horribly'... more like with exuberant enthusiasm and you have no interest in how wonderful I find her, so I should get back on the topic that) then I'd stay on track with the word count, even if I'm crazy-busy with RL responsibilities. For obvious reasons, I'd like the story to appeal to a female audience, one that leans more toward literary and mainstream fiction than fantasy with zombies and vampires.
Help me? Or, just pelt me with random plot ideas, that works too.
