ok, your best plot device for something to happen in NYC? Central Park. They have almost any kind of festival happen there that you can think of.
Here's a device I used in a fanfic once upon a time... there's a black rock, shiney smooth on one side, natural rock for the rest. Anyone who touches it is instantly switched spots with their mirror image on the other side.
You can alter it however you want, but cool artifacts like mirrors and crystals and such make it fun, plus you have to figure out how he's going to have to get back eventually, and that will need to work in relation to how he got there.
