How did they get the pieces to America? Ships weren't really suited for cross-Atlantic travel in the middle ages, and people certainly weren't equipped to traverse an entire continent they didn't even really know about. If you have the spreading of the pieces happen in the 1500s as opposed to medieval times it's more believable, but I still find it a bit of stretch.
