I know NaNo is over, but let's talk about music. What songs really inspire you to write? Any specific bands or artists? This album really inspired me on some of my last endeavors:
It depends on what I'm working on. If I'm writing something historical which is a lot of the time I try and get music from a near to the time period as possible. I use LastFM radio channels as I subscribe. I can usually find useful stuff by searching for a suitable radio station. For instance my epic 16th century AU was boosted by listening to the Renaissance and Baroque tag stations.
Sometimes I'll stick with Handel or Bach as I love the music and I find the music helps me to concentrate. There's something very logical about the harmonic progressions which help me to follow the music and immerses me in court scenes for example.
If I'm working on something and I want to boost my word count quickly, I whack on some heavy metal. That always seems to work for me. Just turn it up and start typing!
Failing that if I'm trying to tap into a certain emotion to write a scene or a climax: sadness, lovelorn, misery, happiness I try to find a song from my library which matches that even if it is anachronistic. A lot of the stuff I listen to is female fronted metal, power metal and symphonic metal so I'm inspired by bands like Epica, Within Temptation, Nightwish Amberian Dawn. I write scandalous, melodramatic emotional stuff so that kind of fits.
I get inspired by all kinds of music. The first three times I heard "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service, it was raining. The fourth time, I had a vision of a fanfic featuring the Weasley twins. In the vision, it was raining.
I've been inspired by everything from musicals ("Hairspray" and "Bye, Bye, Birdie") to hip-hop (Usher and Gym Class Heroes) to classical (Mozart) to country (Rodney Adkins and Brad Paisley).
When I am actively writing, if it's not a songfic, my music has to be without lyrics. If it is a songfic, I listen to the song on repeat until I'm done.
I can't listen to music while I'm writing because it's distracting, but listening to Nightwish really gets me in the mood to write, as does the soundtrack to the Tudors.
Right now, The Halyards. So good. If you open the album, you can listen to any of the highlighted songs. right now the CD 'Fortune Smiles' is in heavy rotation for me, esp. 'Welcome Home' and 'Delicate Touch'.
I listen to all kinds of music while writing. Depends on what mood I'm in. Sometimes I need to listen to instrumental music though so the lyrics don't get in the way of what I'm writing. However, lately after I go to concerts I want to write my own lyrics. After seeing the Backstreet Boys in concert a couple of years ago I wrote my first song, and on Saturday I saw Adam Lambert in Toronto. Since Saturday I've been writing lyrics here and there. No complete songs yet, but I'm leaning toward more lyrics/less fiction lately. :S I need to get back to fiction. It's been far too long since I've written anything creatively.
The Academy Is...! <3 That EP is definitely one of my favorite records of all time. (And I'm pretty sure seeing this post on my friends list caused me to have a dream about William Beckett last night. XD) Just out of curiosity, what kind of things did the album inspire you to write?
I need to have "background" music when I write. No lyrics. Right now for my fantasy stories I listen to a classical collection called "Flute Daydreams", and for my Regency stories, the soundtrack to A&E's "Pride and Prejudice" has been my favorite. The music gets me into the story, like a kind of trigger. I put it on and my brain goes, "Oh. Creative writing time. OK." Also, it helps block outside noise, something important when you do a lot of your writing in the break room at work.
I listen to all sorts of music when I write, it really helps with the creative process. Nothing specific, though. Whatever is in my head or new on my itunes at the time.
