Thank you to those who replied to my entry. It really helped a lot. I decided to make a list of the books I love and why I love them, then make a list of things I like in stories, and then make a list of things I don't like in stories.

The bottom line I came up with was:

A story with colorful, fluid, artistic language that has well-developed characters, a sense of fancy, and a romantic relationship that the reader can really get into. It must be passionate and the reader must really feel what it is the characters are feeling. For modern stories, references to good music, books, and movies are good. Some sort of realization/internal revolution must occur in the main character, typically a way for them to better their life. While the story should be practical and connected, it still needs to be fanciful and slightly out there, ie Witch Baby, Cherokee Bat, & etc. Francesca Lia Block meets The Giver meets Little Nemo meets Perks of Being a Wallflower meets Summer Sisters. Artistry, fluidity, revelation, adventure, compassion, romance.

I think that's going to be my backbone to work on. I have a much clearer picture in my head now. I was getting caught up in the details of the story and forgot that I just want to write something with those qualities. So thanks to you all :)
