Has anyone noticed things influencing your writing such as books you're reading, conversations you overhear, or movies you see?

I recently watched Gangs of New York and if you don't know, it has a lot of blood and violence in it. My story initially has a quite a bit of this seeing as it deals with zombie-like beings and the survivors trying to deal with it all. But after watching that movie, I went to bed and when I woke up, thought of my final scenes which end in massive amounts of blood shed (like, lakes of blood status) due to a very hostile survival group playing antagonist to the group I stick with through my whole novel. Thinking on it, I'm pretty sure that film influenced the scene.

Has this sort of thing happened to you?

So I'm really interested in the MBTI personality stuff, and I was wondering, what personality types do your main characters have? To look more in-depth into it, this website has a pretty good description of the different types, as well as a test. Also, if you know your own personality type, how does it relate to those of your characters? Do you tend to have more characters with the same as you, or complete opposites? I'd just love to see some good discussion out of all this :)

Today someone made a post about varying word counts due to different programs. Curious, I tested mine and here were the results:

NaNo Site: 18,432
Scrivener: 18,403
Cut&Paste Word Counter: 18,033
Wordcounttool.com: 18,841
NeoOffice: 18,840

What do you make of this? Is your word count varying like this? Right now, all I know is my word count is between 18,000 and 18,800, which is a pretty big leap. Any suggestions?

As far as research goes, how much are you doing this month as you write? If something comes up that you can get away with sketching out rather than using detail that requires you to do some slightly in-depth stuff, which do you go for? And what's the oddest thing you've had to research so far for your NaNo, whether it was done this month or before NaNo began?

I did next to no research before this month, so I've been pretty much looking things up as they appear in the story. So far I've had to Google floriology, traditional Italian guitar music, Hungarian and German swear words and the history of Sealand (though the last one turned out to be unneccessary, although still fairly funny). The way in which blood splatters after a stabbing has also cropped up too, although that was less fun to research.

In my novel, I MIGHT kill one of my characters to further develop my main character. The problem is, the character I'm thinking about killing happens to be one of my favorites, and I really don't want to kill her off.

Any advice? Are you dealing with something similiar?

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who is feeling disheartened, and perhaps a little disappointed.

I'm behind on my word count, and I don't feel like writing at all. I just want to sleep. I wrote 700 words today, I didn't write yesterday, and I'm busy and tired and my carpal tunnel hurts. I don't want to give up, but I'm very frustrated and bored with my story. I refuse to change things up and make it "exciting". I also refuse to skip scenes because I'm just not that kind of writer.

My characters think too much.

So, is anyone else currently frustrated/disappointed/depressed/discouraged over/with their novel? Let's hear about it!

This community's profile page mentions "the other 43526897 LJ Nano communities." Does that include communities for those of us who want to write a novel in a month but can't do it in November? This is my first NaNoWriMo, but it's only taken me a few days to figure out that this is a bad month for me to write write write. I'm resuming my novel writing month after the new year; can anyone point me in the direction of communities like this for non-November novel writers?

Thanks in advance!

Do you write character information sheets? If so, do you fill in the blanks of a pre-made one (maybe one of your own, or one from a site/book) or do you just sort of write down tidbits as you think of them? May I see one of yours, if you do write them?

Mine is under the cut. )

Also, I need a little plot help. )

Enjoying the pun of my subject (Trekkies, anyone?)?! But I digress. How many of you are writing your novel chapter by chapter? Are any of you like me and have not written any chapters, but simply written and plan to split it all up later? Is your novel going to have no chapters at all?

Discuss!

I had a heated discussion with my sister last night about characters and their actions. While writing, I simply thought aloud, "Don't you hate it when a character does something you didn't mean for them to do?" My sister looks at me like I'm crazy and says, "What do you mean? YOU control the characters." We then went on into a great big discussion, her saying the writer has complete control and I saying that the characters do what they feel, veering from the plans and plots we have for them.

What do you think? How do your characters behave? Do you have complete control over them?

I have a plot (finally), a good set of characters that have been fun to flesh out over the last week or so, and I have most of the structure of the story sorted. There's just one seriously niggly bit that I can't seem to work out anything for- one action that, by the rest of my planning, I've made virtually impossible for the characters involved to accomplish. Trouble is, that act is what the whole story after that hinges on.

So I was wondering. What do you guys do when you run into an immovable plot object like this? I've been working on it for months, and it's not gone away. Should I abandon it and start working on a different ending, or should I keep going and hope inspiration strikes at some point next month? The current options either involve infanticide (or something like it- this is the ending I'm struggling to work out) with the 'good guys' triumphing, or a 1984-esque hopelessness involving world subjugation on the part of the villain.

ETA: The 'good guys' are not your typical good guys. It would not be your usual 'good guys win' scenario- for one thing, the infanticide's on their part, not the villain's. Because I like moral quandries- although I'm considering changing the infanticide to something borderline child abuse.
