nanowrimo_lj | Word-counting Software?

A question I have, which may also benefit others here, is on word-counting software. I suspect that shareware/freeware is the only way to find such software, but if there is a relatively-inexpensive commercial offering I would be willing to buy that. For this, I am not looking for the word count within a single file (Microsoft Word does that quite nicely, and I primarily write in Word), but software which counts the words in all files in a folder. Since I write a lot of erotica, including some lengthy series, being able to keep each chapter in a separate folder and still get a total word count (and ideally also a count per file) would be quite beneficial.

Any thoughts on where/how to find this?
