Eureka!

My muse worked my brain as I slept, and when I woke up I finally had my "Big Something" plot bunny. Until now I had been concerned because I had been missing the central element of my novel, the "Big Something" that is the central theme/plot/who cares of the story. I woke up this morning with that piece! I let it mull around in my mind a bit, then posted it to my NaNoWriMo blog:

Comments are welcome there. Of course, it's subject to change/morph/tweak between now and November.

So I think I posted an introduction to the Nano2005 community and not to this community. Ooops.

About me....my name is bleuivy here, and on the Nano site, and just about everywhere else online that I'm a member. Writing is one of my favorite hobbies, but I don't do it as much as I should.

I finished Nano last year (with about 150 words extra) and promptly ditched my novel. It was a case of a bad plot happening to good characters. I'm going to resurect the characters and write them into their proper story, but not for November. Maybe I'll do another Nano in december or something and let those old characters out to play.

November's novel hasn't really developed too much yet because now I'm too busy finishing up my masters dissertation. I have a main character (with a name even!) and a location (a cemetery -- ooooh, spooky), but that's about it so far.

Other main hobbies include: hanging out in nature, listening to music, and reading tarot cards. I am an avid collector of them, which is difficult when living on a student budget.

So that's me. Hello all of you!

i am completely and utterly stumped for ideas. short story ideas? i've got tons. but for anything longer in form, my mind is completely blank.

taking into consideration the fact that i have no good ideas, i figured i can't lose anything by going with a bad one. a really bad one: murderer school, an erotic novel about a young woman who goes to teach at a reform school for young male murderers. thirty chapters, thirty students, a sex scene for each. i think this is the funniest thing ever and i can't stop giggling about it.

my question is... should i go ahead and write the joke novel, knowing that i certainly won't be proud of it in the end, or try and hold out for a decent idea that i could revise and edit later? everyone else seems to have a plot and all i have is this murderer school thing. i feel left out. help.

So, okay, I've been thinking a bit and I've managed to get some plot ideas floating around...
These are just rough summaries that I did at...oh...midnight last night? So, probably not terribly high-quality.

Every Other Hero - Fantasy )

As-Yet-Untitled Sci-fi )

As-Yet-Untitled Myth Story )

The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship )

Any thoughts?

Hey Nano writers! It's mid-September, and I'm bringing [livejournal.com profile] nanowarmup back to life! We'll be doing regular writing exercises to get back into the habit of writing, for those of us who don't write year-round. Nothing stressful, we're not trying to burn out before November, just reminding ourselves that writing is fun, and getting pumped up for our novels!

This year, I also want to focus more on character and plot preparation before the actual writing starts. I have found that having an outline helps to give the Nano novel direction, without which our novels might go all over the place, in our desperate attempts to meet word count at any cost. And really getting into the characters helps keep the momentum going for the whole novel.

So join us in preparing for NaNoWriMo and getting into the spirit of novel-writing!

My computer was a bad computer and crashed. So I'm going to post the answers to my previous "OMG it needs to be November" rant right here in FAQ form! To make it look like I'm cool! :D

First of all, the offtopicky ones:

Q: *waves from the GO fandom*

A: *waves back and squees*

Q: [livejournal.com profile] daemonatrix: I loved Good Omens! Anything that Gaiman has his hand in is not to be missed. Where do you write your fanfiction? IS it available for public consumption?

A: Indeedy it is, m'dear! Please step right over this way to my LJ, and the [livejournal.com profile] crowleyraphale and the [livejournal.com profile] lower_tadfield communities! (All the good stuff is posted in all three, you may find a bit more of my work in [livejournal.com profile] crowleyraphale.

The On-Topicky Ones:

Q: I know what you mean. I want to write! But I must wait even though I don't have have to and AUGH.

A: *mournfully snugs* And *I* know what *you* mean. We *HAVE* to wait, even though we don't want to.

Q: Wait until your characters start waking you up, wait 'til you see them, wait 'til you can physically feel them. ^_~

A: I can feel them. I can see them. They look suspiciously like Aziraphale and Crowley. Except without the book fetish. And the Bentley. And the sunglasses.

Q: I can't decide which of two stories I'll be writing about this year.

A: Flip a coin.

Q: *wish it was November. Wish it was November. Wish it was November!*

A: *wishes harder*

I will preface this with the fact I know that there are no Nano-Police. No one is going to kick in anyone's door and no one is going to be shot at dawn for transgressing the loose rules that are Nanowrimo. And all in all, that's a Good Thing.

However (you knew that was coming, didn't you?), I've already seen people publically posting here and there about their plans to cheat.

Excuse me while I cock my head, my jaw agape, to say 'bwah?'.

The premise of Nanowrimo is almost breath-taking in its simplicity. Sign up. On November first, start writing. On November thirtieth, pencils down and full stop. Fifty thousand words of original fiction written in the alloted time entitles you to download a cheesy certificate and to bragging rights until next year.

So simple that even a child can do it... and has, according to the winners lists from years past.

Why cheat? I'm at a loss here.

If you've got a story already running, then set it aside or start from scratch. Or write on what you've got, but in that case, why verify and download a certificate that is intended for something you did not do? How much can that purple bar by your name really mean?

One person I saw included in his remarks that he was planning to cheat... 'just as many of you do'. Dude? Wrong. I've won two years without cheating, and lost one year all fair and square. And I don't know any one who has cheated, not in either of the towns I've done Nano in.

I honestly do not Get It.

Nano or do not Nano, as the master would have said, if little Jedi guys knew about the site.
