a free online translator. But not just any Babelfish, oh no. I need something that can translate English into either Gaelic (either kind) or Welsh. So far I'm stuck with Portuguese and Spanish names for my places. Don't get me wrong, I love them. Let me show you *grin*

-For my town (or at least, the first I've come to yet): Cidade Minúscula Pela Estrade das Montanhas do Troll (hint: it's Portuguese, and very accurately describes my town)
-For the tavern in the town (Santa Cruz people, this is for you!): Taza Fea (hint: this time, it's just plain Spanish, I think)

I just got the second chapter done. Hooray me. I want some feedback, though. Is it good, is it horrible? What needs fixing, what needs toning down, general opinions.

Y'know, I think I might actually be able to get the goal this year. Two chapters in two days. Now let's see if the awesomeness keeps happening or if I putter out towards the middle of the month.

Put under a cut for length and language. My character cusses a lot...

I've a brand new laptop, three weeks old... It's nice, expensive does everything I tell it...

I tell myself "I'll write 600 words, then I'll go to sleep!"

THEN IT FREEZES!

I loose my 600 words...

I was saving all along... But I was on a flow and didnt think to save >_< and it was descriptive and showing depth to my arrogant and selfish Theodore Takenaka...

Oh... And while I'm here...

In six years what do people think technology will be like? I'm the complete opposite of a tech geek, I dont know anything about anything! I just get the iPod, squeal when it arrives, cry when it breaks :p

I just have to post my first, unedited excerpt because this part finally made me get into the story properly. It probably makes no sense, but eh, I don't care. :P

It didn’t sound Evil. It didn’t look Evil. Maybe it just… wasn’t Evil anymore? And even if it was Evil, he didn’t want it to be scared. )

My first official stumble with NaNo happened yesterday. Instead of getting 2000 words I ended up getting like 736 due to a toothache which then spread into a headache and so on. Is that an excuse? Maaaayyybeee... but its also the truth. Its still hurting this morning, my breakfast was pain pills and mountain dew. mmmm satisfying. Dentist is out of the question so I'm hoping the tooth decides to behave until say January. *laughs*

I SWEAR I'm going to write this evening. I feel almost out of my element with this story as its Horror and I usually write Fantasy. I've always wanted to write a Horror though. It's fun in a way to be outside one's element and I'm pretty much letting the story write itself. I dont have a plan or an outline, just letting it flow. Thats the way I write though, I rarely conciously develop the plot till about mid way when I can see the direction the story seems to naturally be taking.

Anyway enough ramble...later

Does anybody else feel hypersensitive to everything, now that you're writing under the gun? I have been staying late at work to write, and last night I decided to write from home instead. I just could not do it. My cats were meowing, which I normally find sweet, and it pierced through my head like a knife. Every little noise my husband made, from opening a cabinet to sorting the mail, had me gritting my teeth. Then I chewed my hangnails down to bloody stubs without realizing it. I don't know if this is just a stress reaction, or if my body is trying to make everything distract me to put off the writing.

(I posted this in my own NaNo blog, but I thought it'd be worth sharing it here as well.)

I did a few comparisons this morning, after having slapped a couple hundred more words into my NaNovel. Someone on one of the LJ comms (sorry,  ican't remember who right now) had posted a link yesterday to this site, and I wanted to make sure that my word count isn't off, between my word processor's counter, the naNo website's one, and... well, others. Here are the results, for the same mount of text each time, of course:

  • TexNotes Pro counts 7,280 words.
  • The NaNo page (after I have uploaded the “novel” as a TXT file, as instructed to do) counts 7,232 words.
  • OpenOffice 1.1.4 counts 7,295 words. (I don’t have Word, by the way.)
  • The JavaScriptKit page, who seems to be the least generous of all, counts 7,080 words.

Quite a bit of difference, indeed, and I can't even use the excuse of my novel being in another language than English and thus deceiving the counters, since it IS in English.

The challenging part in me screams that I need to use the JavaScript counter, if only to really make sure that I've done my work properly. Nevertheless, I find this comparison... interesting.

i took the day off from school to finnish Sophie's Choice, because the essay test is today and im only halfway though (and i refuse to sparknote it or see the movie, as i'm really enjoying it)
BUT i cant concentrate or get more than a few pages read because i keep thinking about my novel and how behind i am. i have about a page written and im panicking. (i should be, but mainly because i have to finnish reading almost 300 pages TODAY)

i must concentrate on Stingo, Sophie and Nathan, not Arden, Claudia, and Francesca. ughhh

Or is the NaNo site broken?

I'm getting bits of the page all over the place. And yet again nothing's working for me.

I hope it isn't just me! Not that I want you all to be having problems, but I'll be really fed up if it's just me it hates!

Hi hi! This is my first Nanowrimo.. and i'm rather excited! My last attempt at a novel was 5 years ago when i was 15, and that's really still in the progress~ For Nano though, i have an entirely new plot, new characters and everything!

Nearly 2k words so far, i started a day late, signed up a day late, but once my exams are over, i plan to write full speed!

My story as of current has no title, but i'm working on it.

and this is a taste of what's coming.. in other words the prologue

My writing journal is [livejournal.com profile] airymilu, and Chapter 1 is also up so please feel free to watch it and i welcome comments and criticism anytime! I know it's supposedly Nano Taboo to go back and read through what you've written and change things, but i like to do it and it helps me improve ~

I hope to hear from everyone of you soon!

Hello all! I hope your novelling is going well, or even going at all. After a rather abortive couple of days, I finally got going, and what did I find myself writing? Fanfic. For the first time in years. Well that's a story for another post. ^^

I thought it would be useful to give an update to the community "rules". This community is very busy, with over 2500 members, so we ask everyone please show consideration to fellow Nanoers. If you wish to post your daily word count, please use the daily word count posts. If you wish to post an excerpt from your novel, please use the daily excerpt posts. If you wish to provide a link to your writing journal or website, please use this post here.

The first two links above take you to the memories section, which we will be adding to as November rolls on. The latter link takes you to a specific post. The mod team has discussed this at length, and feel that, as a courtesy to everyone in the community, using daily word count and excerpt posts will help stem a potentially massive slew of posts. If you slip and do make an individual daily word count post, a mod will leave a comment directing you to the official place in which this belongs, and shortly after the post will be deleted. Continuing disregard for the community's guidelines will result in you being asked to provide an email address so a mod can privately discuss the matter with you. If you feel a post has been mistakenly deleted, please contact a mod about this; a list of our names can be found on the community info page, and personally speaking my email address can be found on my user info.

I will also be adding a link to this post on the community info, encouraging new members to read through the rules before they begin posting. Related to this, intro posts are welcome, so feel free to say hello and discuss Nano. Also, questions, comments, discussion topics, etc., are all encouraged, so please don't be afraid to post! And lastly, we know the Nanowrimo site goes down occasionally, due to the huge number of participants anxious to update word counts and share their stories, but please have some patience with the website.

Additionally, if you are making a long post, or want to post pictures, please use the LJ-cut feature as a courtesy to members on slower connections. We don't have an absolute upper word limit before a cut is needed, so use your discretion. If we judge a post rather heavy, a mod will request you add a cut.

Questions? Suggestions? Feel free to leave comments here. Happy Nanoing!

Bird By Bird by Anne Lammott. Most notably for section three of part one, titled "Shitty First Drafts". (Apologies to the anti-swearing folk, but that's seriously the name of the section.) The section after that, called "Perfectionism, is also a good read. The former emphasises the importance of writing absolute dreck, and the latter gives permission to not be a psychotic self-editor and let you get on with your first draft-writing.

Actually, the whole book is awesome and anyone who loves to write should at least check this out of the library and give it a read. The subtitle to the book is Some Instructions on Writing and Life, which is accurate.

And for serious, yo: If you're going to be procrastinating, why not have an excuse like "I'm researching to refine my technique"?

I have everything outlined an plotted and I think I can keep my Muse adhered to it... BUT!

She's wanting smut. So is one of my characters. And if he gets is way, then the object of his desire will be very willing. Thing is, they aren't meant to be together. So, I'm being more and more convinced to write an affair for these two. Not like that's a bad thing...

It's spring time in my story (well, closer to summer - ie. Beltane), and my elves are getting frisky.

Has anyone else gone this route? The smut wasn't supposed to happen until later (and it still will, but...) and not between the characters that are currently steaming things up. I want to keep to my well-laid out plans, but it's all beginning to degenerate into smut.

Not like that's a bad thing...

I'm doing a lot better than last year! Wow, and I know that I've been told, in the past, that character and dialogue are my strong suit, but all this first-draft writing is really coming across better than I expected! I know I'll have to edit it to within an inch of its life but -for right now- I'm really proud of it!

Chapter One is in the can, introducing the main characters. Some people may look "familiar" but, trust me, each character -while originally based upon someone I knew 20 years ago- is now a composite with their own life and history.

And, yes, already, they're speaking up and smacking me about with their lives!

As I said before, I'm posting my progress over at my NaNoWriMo LiveJournal account, [livejournal.com profile] nanowrimo_dave, so feel free to add me as a friend so you can follow along.

My third installment is located, here.

Reality's Mirror ... Chapter One, part two

Now all I have to do is keep the momentum going and finish Chapter Two tomorrow and the next day... Trust me: this is where it really starts to get interesting!

I'm doing a ridiculously stupid scene in my novel that's make me blush so instead of explaining it, I'll just get to the part I need help with:

Can you quote some very pretty lines or pieces of poetry that are: beautiful/hopeful/romantic/happy/awww inspiring/awe inspiring/fabulous?

I tried to look through the books in my room, but alas Allen Ginsberg is not being incredibly helpful, Keroauc gave me some good ones as did John Keats, but other than that I'm failing.

I have seriously lost all love for writing! Temporarily, anyway.

My muse really HAVE ditched me! Argh!

At the near end of day 3, here are my options:

1. Continue with original plot, which is contemporary fiction and quite depressing. It's set in college and deals with a lot of identity-searching, and individuality, and family issues. It also deals with a romance turned sour. This is really difficult for me to write; it is very depressing and I simply don't have the will nor even urge to touch it. I don't to even prod it with a stick!

2. My new go-with-the-wind story, which is fantasy and while the writing itself is better, the plot is weaker since I don't have a plot! The problem is I haven't worldbuilt or anything so what happens is, the thing will end up sucking. (Previous experience with fantasy didn't turn out so well.) I tried just doing fantasy set in the real world but that didn't work out so well.

3. I wrote a short story last year right before Nano and it turned out pretty well. A lot of people in my writing class loved it and I think it's decent. I could take those characters and age them to an older age so they deal with different things, but essentially, the atmosphere is there. And I have -some- history to draw on, maybe.

Advice? :(

I have fallen very badly behind because of my inability to control the inner editor. (I knew this would happen, considering I'm an editor by profession. Neurotic, yes please.)

This afternoon I started to change all the parts that are bothering me to red text for later reference. It is working to soothe the savage editing beast and allow me to move on. Just thought that might be helpful if you have the same issue.

ETA: Shit, shit, shit. This book needs to be in third person, not first. How can I NOT go back and fix that? AUGH! Please convince me to leave it alone!

I'm a little behind the times introducing myself now on day three..

I sort of stumbled into NaNoWriMo this year. I actually started a story on November 1, and was intending on just cruising along with the tale and seeing where it took me.. Then someone mentioned I should try this, and I thought that manic writing for a month might suit me rather well. So here I am.

specifics of my story )
Hello everyone!
[identity profile] kata-nano05.livejournal.com
Just thought I'd pass this resource on.. it's called 4hb.com

They've got samples of many business forms... and just saved my butt for a novel question. I thought I would pass it on for everyone else to use too!

Cheers!

Hey! I've been a member of this community for a while but I don't think I ever introduced myself... I'm getting more into NaNoWriMo this year than I did last year, so I thought I'd finally say hello.
My novel, Midwestern Amazon, is about a girl who does some research into her family history for medical reasons, and she ends up learning all of these family secrets that have been buried for years. Sort of based on a true story. Except I'm not sure what the family secrets are going to be in the novel.
I'm attempting to do this 50,000 word wonder and my 'real' novel that I've been working on since April. And it's... 50,000 words long. How I'm going to fit seven months' work into thirty days I'm not sure. I've done it before though, so I have to keep reminding myself that. Actually, this is my fifth straight year doing NaNo (although not necissarily winning). So I'm psyched.

And, this year I'd like to try and meet as many fellow NaNos and possible, and try and follow along with their novels. So... feel free to friend me! This is my personal journal. If you'd like to read my novel(s) as they're written, I'm posting them to my writing LJ, [livejournal.com profile] agreektragedy. Feel free to friend that one, too.

Do chapter headings contribute to your word count? Mine will only be "Chapter [number]", so it will only be two words per chapter, so I think it's not exactly a huge advantage to count them, but what do you all think?

I think it's just too annoying in practical terms to bother subtracting them.

I had to spend some time spewing about why, why bother writing at all, why bother trying. Posted here because I'm probably not the only one feeling this way and maybe some of what I've written will strike a chord with someone else.

cut for length and swear words. )

Today has been a terrible day for writing. I left the house at 7:20 in the morning and literally did not get home until 9:50 pm. I'm going to force myself to get to 4000 today (I started a day late, so I'm a day behind) no matter what, but it's just starting to hit me how horrendous my schedule is and how much I'll have to push myself to get this thing done.

I also need to make a hard copy of the novel ASAP so I can write between classes, in the car, during break at work, etc. It's only on my laptop right now, which is probably the best place for it, but I need to get in as many little writing sprints as possible or I won't get to 15K.

Is anyone else finding it difficult to simply find any time to write? I can tell I'm not going to get enough sleep for a month. November is going to be a huge juggling act.

Good luck to everyone (and for those who don't believe in luck, I wish you all the best)!

I'm just approaching the 5k mark and I just told my wife I will have to plan days off next year (maybe not week exactly) but a few days so I can get a sizable jump on this next year.

So far so good...moving at a steady pace, in a groove etc.

Keep writing every one.

So have any of you also been listening to the new nanowrimo podcast?

What do you think? I kind of like it, myself. Sort of reminds me of NPR's This American Life in its presentation.

BTW, while I am here, I want to thank all of those people who have agreed to help with community maintaining duties. They're all wonderful people, and they have my unending love and adoration.
