Date: 2007-10-23 04:12 pm (UTC)My idea so far is to do a kind of linked set of short stories, more like character sketches told through anecdotes. Someone a few days ago gave a name for this kind of plot but I can't remember the term. I'm thinking that the link will be the first-person narrative from the point of view of someone who knows all these people. Can you tell I'm going to be lightly fictionalizing my own life? Hopefully no one I write about will ever see it and recognize themselves! Can anyone point me to some good tips for totally newbies?
I'm in Montreal, Canada and I'd love to toss stuff off other local folks. I'll head to the Meet and Chat thread too. Oh, and I'm contrary_wise on the NaNo boards too.

Date: 2007-10-23 05:07 pm (UTC)I think the kind of novel you're planning is called a "short story cycle"? And it seems to me the best characters often come from real life!

Date: 2007-10-23 07:26 pm (UTC)As long as one's priorities are straight.
I'm planning on writing a dystopian novel in which math and the sciences have taken over what is socially acceptable, and the fine arts and literature are not even publicly acknowledged, let alone explored. Still in the outlining processes...

Date: 2007-10-23 07:28 pm (UTC)I plan to do a sci-fi for my first year here. I'm still sort of fumbling around with a romance slice-of-life that's been stuck in my head, but...my sci-fi storyline really has me motivated. Which is scary, 'cause I've never been one for writing action scenes, much less inspired to begin one.

Date: 2007-10-23 09:15 pm (UTC)I know roughly what my novel *is* and who the important characters are but I'm not certain what genre I'd call it. It's down as "other genres" currently because it could end up as either fantasy or science fiction.
Same name (and picture) on Nano; not yet posted to any forums there. On the one hand I'd like to but on the other there's the distraction factor to be considered.

Date: 2007-10-24 02:16 am (UTC)I'm a Junior in High School taking IB classes and writing in her spare time. I have a strange obsession with the written language.
My book this year is part lesbian romance part literary fiction. It's focused on two girls and their theater company. That's really all I got right now.

Date: 2007-10-24 05:58 am (UTC)I had originally intended to write a fantasy novel, a genre I'd never attempted before, because of a dream my boyfriend had. He's very odd and managed to dream a very detailed dream that outlined an awesome book... but now another plot is invading my mind and I don't know what to do. D'oh!
