That night I dreamed I had gone to London to see Rachel. I met her father, a man who in my dream looked far too old to be her father, like an Italian mobster in the movies. Nonetheless he was a nice man, and the meeting between us was friendly and cordial. Since he was so busy with his work he asked me to take Rachel out to tour the city. Rachel was her same awkward self, maybe a little physically different like people generally are in dreams, even though you still recognize them as that specific person. In the dream we visited various places in London related to the Beatles. Some of them didn’t really exist, but in the world of the dream they were indispensable landmarks of Beatle history - real strawberry fields twisting in the gentle breeze on a street called Penny Lane that only existed in my deepest subconscious. And there we were, walking down that street, the sun glistening over the cobblestones in the same way light bounces off a swimming pool. I could feel my point of view detaching from my body and flying up into the sky, until all I could see were our two silhouettes outlined against the bright sunlight, walking together without a care in the world.
