I've asked a few questions before, but I thought I should introduce myself. My name is Joseph. I've been also called Joe, Joey, Jo (with no E), Jay, and J.J.

I hail from Toronto, Ontario. So yes, my name is Joe and I AM CANADIAN!!!!!!

I just graduated from university, and am trying to figure out the next step in my life at the crossroads. Among the many dilemmas I've mulled over, I've been debating about signing up for NaNoWriMo in the last month.

For the longest time, I like writing. I can write and write and writer forever; just take a look at the verbal diaherra splattered on my livejournal. However, I've had difficulties in doing fictional stories, let alone a novel. My best work derives from personal experiences. As one writing prof told me, the best stories derive from our pain.

However, I do have an idea for a NaNo Novel if I decided to go through with it. Basically, this novel would be a biography of a male character who owns a lot of accessories. In each chapter, a different accessory will tell stories about the male character -- how the accessory met the male character, how the accessory has been treated by the male character, observe the male character and his surroundings, the trips the accessory takes with the male character, etc.

What do you guys think? Does it have any potential? At least enough for 50,000 words?

Any suggestion on how I could proceed or flesh this idea?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Hi all!

I'm the kind of writer that sometimes needs an outside source of inspiration to get my plot ideas flowing once again. I ask for ideas from friends and relatives all the time and have started to keep track of what they tell me. I also have a great book called "14,000 Things to be Happy About" that I use as for prompts as well.

Last month, I started to work on a list and wanted to share it with everyone just in case you are the same kind of writer. Feel free to stop by here and check it out. If you think of anything that you could add to the list, leave a message and I'll get it added!

I've hopped on board the bandwagon.

Question for everyone: Is anyone doing a novel that could be construed as semi-autobiographical? And, if so, how much are you changing the events therein?

"You do know how to find your muse, yes?"

"What you do is, start writing. Anything, everything, just start writing and writing and writing. Eventually, your muse will show up out of sheer desparation to try to stop the flow of crap. At which point, you snag her, tie her up, and chain her to your desk so that she may never escape. Then you violate her repeatedly."

Edit: I have locked this post from futher comments. I don't take kindly to flame-posting that goes so far as to accuse me of advocating rape. If you don't like what you see, simply pass on by and leave those who do the peace and freedom to look. If you have issues with this, I refer you to this link: Literary Freedom Basics

BBC Radio 4 (Front Row) is looking for first time nano partisipants to do a show with. If this is your first year of doing nano, and would like to do a radio show* go look in the nano boards under the england::london section for the name and the phone number.
NOT restricted to England.

I just have to say, for those who have never heard of it. Yerba Matė is my caffeine of choice for NaNoWriMo!

Now, I may just be hyped up on a rush of unprecedented caffeine exposure, or maybe it's all the healthy crap in the Matė, but I have to say it's great!

Below is a link on the caffeine information, and a bunch of other information on Yerba Matė.

Caffeine Information

Sorry for the spam, but this just makes me feel more energetic than soda, coffee, and other teas.

Noticed a few people querying about character profiles and kingdom outlines and how you'd go about it. I replied to one of them with my own profile, but~ I'll make a post too. These are the outlines for my character and kingdom profiles, for a story I've been working on for a tad under 2 years, that being Silent Harmony. So yeah, the outlines are really geared towards fantasy, specifically my own story, but I've edited them a bit so you can use them for your own story. If you've got any questions about any of the bits, let me know and I'll answer as best I can ^^

Right-click and go 'save target as' (or whatever he Mac equivelent is. Haven't used one of those things for a year at least. 'Download to disk' or something like that.), since they're both Word documents, so you won't have to fiddle with too much formatting, hurrah!

  • Character profile outline ~ toiled on for... a while by me and my good friend Cassie. Four pages unanswered, 7-ish answered. It's tedious, yes, but my GOD is it helpful once you're done. Even just writing it gives you a good idea of the character you're doing it for.
  • Kingdom profile outline ~ Stolen with permission from [livejournal.com profile] billradish then edited for my own purposes. Page and a half unanswered, 4ish answered.

Also~ maps are a great help. Doodle up a map of your world with the main landmarks and you can probably figure out something of a kingdom's culture from that. For something different, why not base it in the Southern Hemisphere. Seriously, my story's the only fantasy one I've seen where it gets more tropical the further north you go .-.

Erm... what else... I've mentioned it several times, but whatever. [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets is fantastic for characterising. Stick your character in a random situation and see how they'd react. Also great for giving life to the secondary characters for whom you can't be stuffed doing a full-on 7-page profile for.

Grab a thesaurus, open to a random page and drop your finger. Whatever word it lands on, write a mini!fic based on it. Thesauruses (thesauri?) are better than dictionaries, since you get more abstact words from it--you can only do so many fics by dropping your finger on 'computer', 'per' and 'forthright'. You'd really have to start stretching it after that. Concepts are infinitely better to write random stuff about than actual things.

Sketch your character out. You'd be amazed, really. Coupla years ago, I sketched a random character without any intent on making anything from her. Liked it enough that I inked it, coloured it really nicely, then was inspired to write a mini!fic about her, which quickly became the first chapter of a 47k-word story. A picture speaks a thousand words, people X3

Whee~ I rambled for way longer than I intended there. Sorry 'bout that ^^; Hope it's something of a help... to someone... somewhere... out there... maybe...

So, I started outlining plot and characters for this year's effort, in the hopes that solid organization would let me breeze through a zero draft pretty quickly. With the remaining time, I would challenge myself to finish Nano 2002; and, in the extremely unlikely possibility that I would manage to finish Nano 2002, I'd use the last few days/hours to start a second round of editing on Nano 2003.

There are people out there who do manage to get 10k+ work on several projects plus complete their 50k novel. How they manage this, I do not know.

Anyway, I found out that all that lovely preplanning puts me in touch with an unpalatable fact: I don't give a rat's ass about this story, nor do I care if I cross the 50k line this year. The point is to produce as much as I can to deadline, as far as the 50k goes, and having already pumped out a novella of speed, I don't feel the need to prove to myself that I can do it. After all, I already did. On top of that, the book I am planning to write is something I am not so happy about that my fingers will fly across the keyboard.

I suppose it's best to find out that I can't committ to this story before 1 November. There is still time to get some planning done. Not much, though; only a few hours. There are a plethora of things that I have to get done before 1 November, so that I will have free evenings and enough done to neglect all my other projects with a clear conscience.

Now, however, I find myself in that state of flux that heralded last year's decesion to just go with whatever came out of my fingertips. On the whole, I like last year's story, but it does have one problem. There is a central plot point that is pretty... ah... socially unacceptable, so much so that I don't see a mainstream publisher ever touching the book, even if were edited to a point of being otherwise perfect. The story pretty much hinges on this particular plot element, so eliminating it is not possible.

And that's sort of what I am worried about here. The point of participating in this, for me, is the joy of writng. My, how cliche that sounds, but it remains true. I have no burning need to be published. Nonetheless, I do not want to find myself in the position of having a novel in my hands that is permanently destined for the locked drawer, either.

    Argh.

Uhm, I hate those obligatory introduction posts, so you can just read my profile (very thorough) to get to know me :-D

What I want to rant and whine about is OMG I WANNA START. SO BADLY. Like, for weeks I thought I would have absolutely no idea what to write about, in what direction to go...I'm terrible about coming up with plots. Once I've got a plot, I can go on from it, but I haven't had any in years, and so all my writing has been limited to personal journaly things.

But I got a plot. I worked really hard and listening to inspirations and putting together ideas from the strangest sources, and I have a blinkin' plot. YES.

And it's all planned out, I'm even starting to write an outline. But ya know. I really want to start the meat of this story. I want to start writing it.

Anybody else having a hell of a time waiting for November 1 to rolla round?
