Hi...First time NaNoWriMo writer. Big jump for me, as I've not written anything long before. I've joined NaNo04 as well, and show up on NaNoWriMo's forums. Plus, have another LJ, under kaVri, that is more general. Started 'kaVri_writer' so as not to flood my regular journal with my musings on writing.

Good luck to everybody!

Oh, mine is only roughly sketched out, but is a surreal/humourous genre (David Lynch meets Douglas Adams kind of thing). I am not too worried about it being good, having coherency, or even a plot...I just want to be disciplined to write everyday, and finish.

Hi, all. I've been a member for a while, but not watching.

I tried doing it last year, but wound up not finishing. Since I hate to do that to a good book, I'm now trying to finish the rest of the story (in however many words it takes, which may or may not be the entire 50,000) before the start time.

I've got another story lined up for this year, but I just don't feel right about leaving Randy, Alia, Drew, and Chuck hanging while I pay attention to Beatrice and Ben.

In summary: AAAAAAIIIIGH! *runs around in circles, tears hair*

I have an issue in real life that will disrupt my Nano and I'd like some advice on how I should proceed.

On November 1st, I have a Japanese student coming to stay with me for twelve days. I'll effectively be loosing half of November.

Because FriendsPages are crowded enough anyway )

Any advice at all would be great. Feel free to Donate a Character even though I may not be able to use them.

A plea for plot help!

Problem: I don't really care about my story.

Usually when I start writing a story, I have this passionate idea and I spew it all out and run out of steam quite soon. So, in order to make this last 50,000 words, I decided to plan it out, really go in-depth in my characters and everything. Except now I've worn the story out to the point where I just don't like it. So if you feel so driven, I'd love to have your comments/critiques/suggestions for the plotline so that perhaps I can tweak it and like it a little more.

The general idea is this: 5 very different people live in a town with no color that has little emotion and is generally extremely monotonous. A mass hysteria overtakes the town when a townsperson, Winkler, is found with a purple paperweight, and people begin to fear a revolt of those who want color back, as it was banned 45 years ago. Winkler and 4 others who are wrongfully suspected of leading the imaginary color revolt (as there really isn't any such revolt in the works) are sentenced to exile on a flying sailboat. The majority of the story takes place in the sailboat when they are interacting and various things are planned to happen, and they end up sky-sailing to cities and discovering what the outside world is like. Something like that.

The whole point is for it to be fanciful, colorful (no pun intended), with slightly unrealistic and quirky characters/situations, but with an underlying allusion to hysterias in history, like the Salem Witch Trials. My sister suggested I make it a complete allegory of World War II, with every character standing for something and even going as detailed as their actions and gestures and how they relate.

But I don't know. All I want is a story with the fancifulness of Stargirl, the compassion and artistry of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and some of the heated romance and passion of Summer Sisters. (I am a sucker for a good love story.) The kind of book where a lime green cover with a simple black title called "Float On" or something would suffice.

I am clueless. Any help?

I have problem. I can't have caffeine anymore, and that is what has always fuelled my greatest writing attempts.

Anyone know any good substitutes that don't contain caffeine?

Thank you to those who replied to my entry. It really helped a lot. I decided to make a list of the books I love and why I love them, then make a list of things I like in stories, and then make a list of things I don't like in stories.

The bottom line I came up with was:

A story with colorful, fluid, artistic language that has well-developed characters, a sense of fancy, and a romantic relationship that the reader can really get into. It must be passionate and the reader must really feel what it is the characters are feeling. For modern stories, references to good music, books, and movies are good. Some sort of realization/internal revolution must occur in the main character, typically a way for them to better their life. While the story should be practical and connected, it still needs to be fanciful and slightly out there, ie Witch Baby, Cherokee Bat, & etc. Francesca Lia Block meets The Giver meets Little Nemo meets Perks of Being a Wallflower meets Summer Sisters. Artistry, fluidity, revelation, adventure, compassion, romance.

I think that's going to be my backbone to work on. I have a much clearer picture in my head now. I was getting caught up in the details of the story and forgot that I just want to write something with those qualities. So thanks to you all :)
