Hey all! Being as my friends page has been awash in introductions for the past week or so, I've finally stopped procrastinating and started mine.

I'm Margot, and this will be my first NaNo. While I'm inclined to say that it's the worst year ever to start (senior year... hurrah for college apps), I realise that I'd probably have said the same exact thing last year, and would probably say something similar if I decided to start NaNo next year. Given my general lack of time, I figured now's as good a time as any.

I'm hoping that the whole deadline thing will get me to finish something, being as that's one of my biggest problems, and as problems go in general, it looms pretty large.

(Ahaha, I'm so sleep deprived. Thus, rambling.)

Anyway, I'm going to be writing about a writer. It's essentially a study of a year or two in her life, complete with relationship woes and the social awkwardness that comes of living at home at 27. However, due to the lack of solid plot, that's the best summary I can give without getting into potentially boring detail.

And I need sleep.

Wow! Quite a few introductions going on in this community lately. I did mine a while back, but I can do it again.

My name is Candace and this will be my second NaNoWriMo. I completed last year's with about 150 to spare and the thing is still be edited. This year, I hope to go beyond last year's count by at least 300 or more words.

Good luck everyone!

but here is my introduction...

I was wondering how long I could hold out without introducing myself but after reading everyone else's, especially VixenVipere's, I gave in to temptation.

Name: Jenn(ifer)
Nicknames: Don't think you guys care.
Status in life: 3rd year student at the University of Hawaii - Manoa, working two jobs (Marking Assistant at UH Press and Sandwich Artist at Subway).
NaNo experience: 2004, achieved! I'm so happy I made it on my first try and the experience was exhilarating, unforgettable, and amazing. However, I am not sure I want to kill myself (physically AND emotionally) this year again. I am not ruling it out for the future though.
Participation this year? I will be present in the Nano Chatroom to support all the friends I've met last year. I'm the official cookie distributor in the Chat (Don't ask...). Lots of word wars; I may do some as well. I will definitely be writing on my own but not officially a Nano because I have no intention of making 50k or even anywhere near there.

I am curious. Why are some people so involved with their NaNo work? Some people seem not to comprehend it's not about being serious, so when someone else starts having good ol' NaNo fun they respond irrationally. *shrug*

The whole reason I decided to join NaNo is because of what is stated on the NaNo website: "Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. Because by forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down."

I don't necessarily believe most of us will write "a lot of crap," but I do believe most of it won't be 5-star material. Many of the ideas I've seen posted, and the ideas of my own that I posted, are lightheared and may even poke fun at themselves.

Seriously folks, for those unaware, the point is to just have fun while writing 50,000 words.

...and on another note, I wouldn't want to see anybody call someone elses ideas stupid. %_%

Hi all, guess I'll join the crowd. I failed miserabley in 2003 at my first attempt at Nano. But last year I happily succeeded thanks to far better preperation. I am still not sure If I am going to try to do NaNo this year since I just started college and I'm taking a class in novel writing and I'm not sure if I can juggle that story with NaNo.
If I do NaNo this year I have a couple of interesting charcters looking for a plot. Yoshi McCarthy, a half-Japanese Marine brat and Evan Berger, a kid adopted from Saudia Arabia virtually at birth. Anyway I'm thinking of exploring some aspects of racism from these two fully American characters that just happen to look different.

As for myself, I'm 26, just started college like noted above, and I have a husband currently in Iraq until the middle of next year. No kids, two cats, and a modicum of ambition.

Just joined up, but I thought I'd post an introduction. My name is James, though my furry name is Sethor. My friends call me either name, I respond to both. I've been an amateur writer for a while now, had a few things published in small publications. I've also recently been doing some freelance writing about paranormal things.

This will be my second year for NaNoWriMo. I completed NaNoWriMo 2004 a few days before the end of the month, my final story ending at just over 51,000 words. Last year my story The Underground Rainbow was simple enough to write from a basic outline and some notes I'd written before. This year, I'm planning something that would qualify as sci-fi, but I'm going to need to do a little research before hand for technical information about some of the machinery and theoretical technology that I'm going to use in my story this year.

Completing NaNoWriMo 2004 was a major accomplishment, and when I need a bit of inspiration, I glance to the wall behind my computer desk, where I have me completion certificate framed and up on the wall. I have plenty of wall space left too. Good luck everyone!

Ok since there are currently more nano posts than my actual friends posts on my friends page, and I just spent 30 minutes reading them instead of getting ready for work, and because I do enjoy talking about myself, I figured I'd break down and post an introduction as much as I loathe writing them.

So to begin, this is my second attempt at NaNoWriMo. I made a valant effort last year but found trying to finish my senior year of college while being the editor-in-chief of a newspaper was more than enough to occupy my time. But I've since graduated, gotten a full time job and feel that I should have the spare time necessary to write this year and actually finish something. Finishing, it would appear, is always my big problem. I have ideas and good intention galore but rarely finish projects that don't have deadlines and grades attatched to them (or paychecks).

As for my plot... )

Does anyone know of a way to make it so community posts don't show up on a friends page without unjoining? If not I think I'm going to just have to haunt this page and not actually be a member. Not that it hasn't been fun or that I haven't enjoyed it. I certainly want to keep talking about nano and such, but I just counted on my lj and 16 out of 20 were this community. It's not that my friends don't post much, all these have been posted since about 11 pm last night I think (based on when I updated my journal).

It's getting to the point where I nearly miss the things my friends post because everyone is just so social here ^.~ If it turns out the only way to accomplish this is to unjoin, heh, you won't have gotten rid of me this early, I'm sure I'll still pop up around here sometime, especially in November.

Hi, introduction week it is:

Name: Alycia
Nickname: Ven
Age: 23
Current Location: Hawaii

Anyhoo, I'm in the Army, and generally write fantasy, sometimes with a strong shounen-ai slant. Last year's novel was about the reasons why you -don't- want to be the object of affection of an undead Fairy King. *shakes head*

Last year was my first year actually attempting NaNoWriMo, after a few years of saying I would. I made it with a little over 50K, which I'm proud of, considering during that November, I was deployed to Iraq.

Though huddling in a bunker and cursing the Iraqi insurgents roundly -did- give me time to think over where I wanted to go next. I suppose I should thank them...

This year, I'll do it again. Not sure what I'm doing it over, though a friend has given me the suggestion of actually writing out the mythology and history and world-view of the people I have created through role-play. Complete with foot-notes and apendices! I -do- want to be a historian...Think it'll make the big Five-Oh?

Pico the Great everywhere online, my own person everywhere off.

I'm a first-year college student, and have been planning to do NaNoWriMo since sometime last year, when I first learned about it mid-November. I'm writing another novel, but I do like to pop off on other things every now and then, and writing overall is, for me, rather like crack: I started, I'm hooked, I don't want to stop, and if I go too long without it I feel like shit.

I opened a writing journal for the november novel: it's here, should you feel the slightest inclination to click on the link I have so generously provided.

I'm quite sarcastic, I must warn you in advance. That said, I do have a plot, or rather a dream. It amounts to the same thing, in this case.

I'm currently getting set to embark on my fourth Nano-adventure.

First year, finished easily. Middling lousy novel, but got myself one halfway decent character out of the deal. And a nifty certificate and the kudos of family and friends.

Second year, hounded a friend into doing Nano with me. Agreed to act as co-Municipal Liason. Was felled by a week long migraine which eventually drove me to seek treatment at the ER. The medication they gave me put me in bed for almost another week. By the time the fog cleared I had to admit I wasn't going to finish. Swore I would be back.

Between second and third Nano, moved across the country.

Third year, volunteered to act as ML in my new home town. Dragged a local friend into taking part. Finished with time to spare. Ended up with a middling fair murder novel, and with a couple of characters that were rather nice but would have been better in some other genre.

This year have been turning the characters over in my head, considering genres and plot ideas. The art of Michael Parkes has been flirting with my plot idea and giving it a strange new twist.

I'm about to turn 50, have three grown children and five grandkids. In my spare time the rest of the year I write, work out, take many pictures of the Oregon Coast, play in the SCA, do various fiber arts and hang about with mad theater folks. I'll be an ML again this year, which means hanging posters, making up goodie bags and arranging meet ups during Nano. I may also be involved in a local theater production as crew during Nano, which could become... interesting from a scheduling standpoint.

Judging from the placeholder pages, I have a bad feeling that our friends at NaNoWriMo forgot to renew their domain registration, and godaddy.com has taken them over. I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm right, it could be a while before the site is back up again.

I tried to see if I could grab the domains, but no go. I was going to reserve them and turn them over to the NaNoWriMo guys, but no such luck.

UPDATE: The same issue seems to be true for nanowrimo.org.

I stumbled over here after not being able to see the NaNo page, and saw all these lovely introductions, so I thought I'd join up and post one, too. (And help flood the flist some more. Hehe.) I'm thirty one (for another couple of weeks, anyway), married with two kids, and this is my fourth NaNo. The first one was awful, but a lot of fun to write. The last two were better, but still need work. This year's NaNo will be a good one, hopefully. After last year's silliness, I decided to go serious again and try to write something creepy.

Um, that's all I can think of for now.

Well, everyone's doing it, I suppose I might as well hop the bandwagon while it's going by.

Nihao, my name is Kristine, though I've managed to persuade my friends to call me Aika or Aika-chan because I love dabbling in other cultures. I'm from Canada (eh?), and am attending school during the NaNoWriMo. I hope this won't be a problem for me, since I managed to finish last year during school somewhere around 50,800 words. This is my first year in high school and in an accelerated program so the workload is substantially larger, but I figure if I could do it last year while I was still just a beginner, I'll most definitely be able to do it this year when I'm a NaNo veteran and a much better writer.

As for my writing experience, I've only finished one novel (last year's NaNo, titled 'Morning Sun') which I have yet to edit. I usually write short stories of 1000-8000 words, but I've also written a few long fanfictions (none of which I'm proud of, sadly) and the very rare poem or dialogue. My favorite pieces to write are short stories that put a twist on reality, much like the Twilight Zone. This year's NaNo, currently with no working title, is about a girl writing down her friend's dreams and turning them into stories. It's based on an idea I got from my own friend's dream, so that should work out perfectly.

That's about it for me... anyway, good luck and ganbatte to all the other NaNo-ers here in LJ Land!

and welcome to moviefone NaNo '05! I first discovered NaNo in late Sept. of 2003. The artist of a web comic I was rather fond of explained that the comic was going on hiatus, a forced hiatus. It seems her grades were less than stellar and her parents were demanding that she spend less time on the comic and more on school work. She posted a link to NaNo and encouraged us, her faithful readers, to produce.

The hiatus explanation knocked me for a loop. Shocked that the comic was written by someone young enough to be essentially grounded, I followed the link and signed up. How could I not? Here was this kid who had been making her art and putting it out there for others to puruse for over a year, while I, no longer a kid, couldn't find any time to devote to my art (writing), shared or no. Time - more than time - to start writing again, I told myself.

And I made it! Despite oral surgery & a having to nurse a loved one after a car accident, I actually hit 50k words the day before Thanksgiving. The goal had become secondary to the story and I kept on writing through the 30th. After NaNo I joined some online communities and kept writing, though I didn't develop my NaNo novel any further. The next year found me as co-ML for Brooklyn & Queens, NY alongside a friend I'd made through NaNo the previous year. Between ML duties, commuting woes, and a fender bender of my own, I came thisclose to goal, but didn't hit 50k in '04. (I reached 49,112 just before midnight of Nov. 30th. Ouch. That still stings.)

One of the first NaNo stickers I received reads "Another year, another novel." I just put it up in my work space, adding under it the years 2003 and 2004. And now...

2005. I'm back, once again co-ML, though this time just for Queens. If someone expresses interest in organizing events in Brooklyn, we might have as many as 6 MLs for NYC this year!

Since I've been commenting on and off I thought I'd introduce myself. I am [livejournal.com profile] mrs_picasso I've been gearing up for this year's NaNo with some brainstorming and research.

I love historical novels, so that's my thing. Last year I wrote of a bored young woman trapped in a small town during the 1920s. (There is so much trouble that bored characters can get into!) This year I'm moving into the 1930s. I don't get too crazy with the research, I just get familiar with the period and later on, when I am stuck, I can look at my research for period relevant plot ninjas. (I made the boring conservative boyfriend suddeny decide to become a bootlegger, among other things.)

In life outside of writing, I am a writing tutor at a local college, and a graduate student at another. The rest of the time I'm a housewife. (I've already admited to being 35 during the recent poll.)

If you want, friend me, but leave a note so I will know to friend you back. I f-lock my journal so my students can't see it.

So I know I've asked this before, but I want to get more specific this time. I like to write while listening to music, so I have questions:
1. Do you listen to music when you write? Why?
2. What do you listen to? Why?

I'll answer my own questions.

1. Yes, I listen to music. I have a couple of reasons for it.
a. I have ADHD, so I need the additional stimulation. Same goes for me sitting in class...I usually take notes with one hand and play with silly putty in the other.
b. I use music to help me get the mood right for certain scenes, like an impending genocide. You wish I was kidding about writing about that :-P

2. I'm really big on movie soundtracks. My favourites are the three LOTR soundtracks, A Beautiful Mind, basically anything with instrumentals or very gentle vocals. If I listen to music with lyrics I tend to sing along (as it's impossible for me to listen to a song and not sing-don't worry, I have a decent voice) and then I get so distracted I lose my train of thought.

Now I want to hear your thoughts. I'm always up for new music recs :)

Well everyone else is doing it, so I thought it'd be polite to introduce myself too :) My name is Alexander, and this is my first nano attempt. I made a little impromptu attempt of my own in August, and was still on schedule when i hit 35k, but *sigh* decided to stop because the mad pace was killing a story that had a lot of depth in it (which it was rapidly losing.)

So in November, I'm going to do something more fun, that I don't care so much about the result of!

My idea so far )

Oh, and I've been running around commenting on people's intros as [livejournal.com profile] 1863, which is my personal journal, but this is my writing journal. I thought it was a good idea to keep a log of everything I'm thinking/doing for my writing, separate from the day to day lj crap.

Hey everyone! My name is Sarah, I usually penname as Stardust or Authoress, and this is going to be my first year doing NaNoWriMo. I can't wait, I think it'll be fun. Oh, um...I'm a junior in high school, and this year is probably about the worst year for me to try NaNo, but why not? I think it'll be fun. And I'm going to try my eyes out. This is my writing journal, but my real journal is authoress17.

I'll post my prospective novel details behind a cut, in case anyone ever reads it.

Greeks, High School, Potions, and a Whole Lotta Romance )

If anyone's from San Antonio doing NaNo and would like to be friends, leave me a comment on my journal or something.

This year will be my second Nanowrimo and I'm glad it will start just when the fasting month is about to wrap up. Last year, it started in the middle of fasting month, and out of 30 days, there were 10 days I didn't write at all for various reasons: from woman's cramps, bad influenza and celebration days. I almost gave up. But I finished the 50,000 words story, two days before the closing date, with 8,000 written frantically in 6 hours.

The most important lessons I learned from Nanowrimo? Writing with no plot is much more difficult than having a plot laid out in advance. And that human brains indeed have no bottom, if you're willing to go down as deep as possible.

This year, I have decided, that I'm going to write a fanfiction too, just like last year. Only from different fandom. I'm rather hopeless with original stories. To keep myself on track, I have made little notes on what I'm going to write. I might do some researches, afterall, I have the whole fasting month being hiatus from writing.

I'm looking forward to the craziness. Feel free to call me Duckie-chan, or just Duckie, because that's what my closest LJ friends call me ^ ^

Good luck to you all *blows kisses*

Once upon a time there was a princess who had lived in a tower all her life.

Okay, so I'm not technically a princess, and it was more of an attic then a tower. Besides, it wasn't all my life; I only had that room for about two years. Anyway, I'm eighteen, and currently live at the end of the hall on the bottom floor of my college dorm. I have two roommates, not that I usually know where either one is. I'm majoring in English, with a concentration in Creative Writing. I am going to get my BA and then I am going to write. Uh . . . more.

I'm a first time NaNoWriMo-er--a friend down the hall introduced me. I don't actually blog at LJ anymore. That goes through blogger, and if anyone cares it can be found at http://ccrunewood.blogspot.com

Oh, yes. Name. Chailyn Cole Runewood; that's my penname, anyway. Recently I go by Chai, which is pronounced "shay".

I just visited http://www.nanowrimo.com and it looks like it's trying to come back. The page is formatted badly, but at least it's better than nothing!

Amid all the hellos and excitement, I wondered something:

Anyone else recently established a nice plodding pace for writing and wondering what will happen to the progress and discipline after NaNo?

Last year when I decided to participate I hadn't written anything in months, so I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying NaNo. This year I finally got myself back on a regular writing schedule post-NaNo in early August. I was and still am excited for NaNo this year, but I am afraid I will lose track of the three projects I am working on now, burn out, and stop writing for a while after NaNo again.

Anyone have any tips, advice, or experience with this?
