Computer problems!
Nov. 7th, 2006 09:58 am![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)
I do not own a computer, so I started my novel at work and arranged to borrow a laptop from my nephew. It didn't have a plug, so I spent over $100.00 for a plug. It took days and days to get the laptop down from Boston to CT, and when I finally got it all plugged in ...
... it wouldn't turn on. The internal power source is fried.
I only have 2,100 words. I'm *thousands* of words behind and I don't even know if I'll be able to catch up.
But just in case, I'm ordering a Dell today.
... it wouldn't turn on. The internal power source is fried.

HELP! I've reached the famed end-of-week-1 slump. I've gotten about 11,300 words written (43 pages) and I'm just sick to death of this thing. I can't stop, because I promised myself I'd finish, but it's getting harder and harder to come up with anything to write. I've tried longwinded description, I've tried filler, I just can't seem to care anymore. This is most disturbing. I'm writing in a fantasy-type setting. Please, any help? Words of encouragement? Bizarre plot twist ideas?

Bleugh. I'm at a part in my story and I'm bored of it. Its necessary in building up to the characters madness but I just wish she'd get on and go crazy NOW!!!
Then I can write all the fun parts like nightmares, premonitions, visions and despair. I haven't decided what will happen after that but I trust my story to take me where it wants to go.
I'm at work today. Its not easy to write. I'm behind. I'm nearly at the 10,000 mark but I hoped to be way past that by today. And a friend is coming for dinner after work so thats more distraction. Oh! I wish I was at home.

I had a long desert journey to write, full of subtle interactions between my MC and the Wise Mentor to explain magic, get the atmosphere right - you know the drill. It was all so slow! I really wanted to get on to the next exciting bit and the words weren't coming out right.
So I cheated. I wrote 'They journeyed for four more days through the desert.' Then I skipped ahead. Suddenly the words are flowing again! Gosh, the freedom of this mad dash for noveling growth is exhilarating! It's only a first draft! Yippee!
I think I've had too much caffeine...

It was mentioned to me that it's alright to write with pen and paper and transcribe after November 30th. Two years ago when I 'won' NaNo I had to submit my manuscript in full for verification that I'd won. Have the rules changed so that you can enter your word count using the honour system for the final verification? Otherwise I'm either going to have to enter some random computer text OR do a heck of a lot of typing. Most of my story is in a notebook.

It's hard to kill someone you love. Even when they're a character in one of your novels.
The first (and prior to that) murders in the serial killer story I'm doing for NaNo, only the people in the story care about. I didn't much. This one I like so much. I hated writing his murder. But I just now killed him.

So, my little spare time has been consumed by cardio and weight training. I'm well on my way to my weight-loss goals, but I...um...haven't started my novel yet.
What is the farthest you veterans have gotten behind and still won? I could use some pep talky-ness.

OK Folks... just a reminder of the rules that are posted for this journal:
( Rules of the Group )
That said, I will add two more, one that should have remain unspoken until now, and one that I am personally making notice of because I am getting tired of seeing certain topics resurface in this group.
A. Respect ALL the people within this community, ESPECIALLY your moderators.
Everyone is here to place nice. NaNo is a stressful time, but you should still be here to have fun. This community exists to help others, to cheer each on, and make new friends. I do NOT like seeing posts that single out specific genres as being "wrong" or "bad", and this includes the fanfiction genre.
I will say this only once. If I see one more post that singles out a group in a derogatory way (and here it has been fanfiction numerous times), I will start removing people from this community. And if I see any more stabs at fanfiction writers in general, I will take personal action to remove you from this group.
My Reasonings, as from the last time this topic came up
And secondly, concerning myself and the other mods... we are here to keep this community in shape. We also have special things we all do for this group that makes it a bit more enjoyable and fun to be a part of. Mo in particular does her Sprints and the daily count posting. I do no appreciate seeing and/or hearing that members of this community disrespect us in posts, chat rooms, and the sprint room.
Remember that membership in this journal is all your own free choice. If you do not like how something is done, you have your own free will to leave. We are not holding you here. But seeing people complain about how we work this group and try to take the group's events into your own hands is NOT acceptable, and in some cases insulting.
B. This group is not a platform for your political/religious/sexual opinions to be displayed to others.
That being said, if you have a topic that is very touchy on this and have it in your excerpt, please go on the side of caution and post the excerpt in your own Lj, and post a link with a warning in the excerpt post. You do not want to have to deal with the fallout that a heated opinion war can cause anymore than we do.
Therefore, This new rule will be added to the community, and I expect it to be followed.
6. Respect the people in this group, even if your opinions differ from theirs. Adult discussion and civil debating is fine. Flaming or rude and unwarrented comments will NOT be tolerated.
That is all. If any of you have comments, feel free to use this post to address them to me and the other mods.

on the flip-side...

to counter this post (which shows compassion for characters)...
i have this question for you folks. :)
do you have any character(s) that you particularly enjoy the idea of planning out their death(s)?
every single character of mine is an AU (alternate universe) version of characters i've used for roleplays, and a series of books which i'm actually putting thoughtful research into (so essentially, this novel will be a side-story, in an AU :D)
so thus, i'm enjoying the idea of killing them all off, just to relax my frustration of them just not up and writing themselves, and researching their own bloody weaponry and such for the series. friggin characters, not writing themselves. writing shouldn't BE this hard! XD
some don't deserve to die so much, but the characters around them do deserve to suffer, so they will watch their friends die, and then be killed too. :)
am i the only truly sadistic person who thinks like this? i hope not! O_o;
keep in mind, this is for my writing. i'd never do anything like this in the big scary real world. people seemed to forget that about me a lot when i was in school and into the horror genre. ;)
ETA: thanks all, good to know i'm not the only one who relishes murdering characters in wonderfully thought-out ways. :)

Well, my novel is starting to turn towards a super hero type genre. The problem is I've never written one before. Are there any resources out there for help with writing super hero stories?

Ughhh I'm so het up about the (US) elections today I can't concentrate long enough to write a word, and the returns haven't even started coming back. Anyone else too nervous to create? (Note: don't share your political orientation here and I won't share mine. I'm just commenting on the suspense in general)
