It's 12:02 on the east coast. GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE.

And it begins! This is the spot daily where you can post a comment with your word count for your daily writing. Use it to keep track of your progress against the rest of the community!

Text and word meters are both allowed, and motivate each other on!

It's been November 1st for over two hours here in Finland but I'm having a break from writing and finally taking the chance to post some NaNo slogan icons I made in October. Hope you like them!

NaNoWriMo 2008
Chapter 1
It was a dark and stormy night...

(Okay, I'm sorry. But it was there, it's sort of mandatory at some point in the cycle, and SOMEONE needed to use it and get it out of the way. Besides, it was keeping the plot pandas away from the keyboard.)

I always have a hard time setting out on an intrepid new project without smaller goals to help me along. Thusly, I'm actually floundering in my first freaking chapter, simply because I don't have a word count goal. I know what to write, but it's making me twitchy.

Couldn't find it on the NaNo homepage FAQs or anywhere I looked. So what's the starting word count goal for each day? Is it somewhere around 1800 words? I kind of remember having to write 2500 by the end of the month last year--but that's because I was easily distracted. Seeing a pattern here, anyone?

This whole writing in the morning thing is taking far more brain power than I expected. Sigh. Thanks in advance for whomever takes pity on my witless state.

I'm reposting about the sprints tonight just in case the other post wasn't clear. i didn't want anyone missing out.

AIM ROOM: nanosprints
TIME:9pm EDT/8pm CDT/7pm MDT/6pm PDT UNTIL 12am EDT/11pm CDT/10pm MDT/9pm PDT
WHAT: NaNo sprints! Write as many words as you can during the allotted time, and see how many words other people can manage.

Come and sprint in 10 minute bursts, at the :10, :30 & :50. There will be a 10 minute break between each sprint. That works out to be 30 minutes of sprinting for every hour. If you've read this post, please don't ask when the next sprint will be or how long it will run. I will give a two minute warning before each sprint.

I know the schedule might not work for everyone. If that's true for you, explore other options.

Fun fact: it is actually possible to write without sprinting.

Feel free to come in ahead of time and chat to fellow NaNo'ers.

Any questions, AIM me at 'callita623'.

You can invite yourself! All you need to do is open your Buddy list. Click 'chat', then clear the list. Put your name there instead and in the place of room name, put nanosprints. Easy!

Rules are same as always:

- Discuss your novel. Ask people for ideas if you're stuck.
- DON'T discuss religion, politics, lifestyle choices.
- Don't tear each other down. Not on plot choice OR word count.

please remember that while the sprints are taking place there will be no talking as it distracts from the 'stop' time. some have their chats set to blink and the blinks take away from knowing when to stop. if you are asked to stop talking, please do so immediately.

Never, ever be the first to talk in the Sprint room. There MAY be a Sprint going on.

if you live outside the U.S. and are unsure what time this is for you (or inside the U.S. and don't really have a grasp of time zones), please refer to this handy website.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our morning sprints.

For NaNoWriMo this year, I'm writing a Harry Potter fan fic that revolves around the characters Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley.

Is anyone else writing fan fiction, Harry Potter or otherwise, for their NaNo novel? Is anyone else writing in the Draco/Ginny 'ship?

I posted these last year, and was thinking maybe I could post them again? If this isn't cool, that's fine :) I won't post'em, but I know we had a lot of fun reading them and they were encouraging to a lot of people.

Day 1 )

Happy writing, everyone!!!

I tried to participate last year, but I had a baby on the 16th and lost all focus.  I know this year life is going to get crazy around the 16th again for the big first birthday party, so I'm trying to bust it out at the beginning.  I'm having a mom's night out this evening with some local writers at a B&N.  Anyone else doing something like this?

Also, I'm doing some characters that have special abilities that only happen when they are in close proximity to someone.  Like they can see their future or hear what they are thinking or know if they have a health problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions for what the abilities could be?  I'm looking for things that might be amazingly incredible and some things that might not seem so useful.

TIA
[identity profile] kittieonmyfoot.livejournal.com
So I'm off to an amazing start (unlike previous years where it took me half the day to reach my 1667 words). I hope everyone else is doing well too! I'm so pumped and have good feelings about this year! (and almost missed taking my pill because of noveling! What a story to tell the next generation :P)

The reason for this post: what other months feature the kind of writing contest like NaNo? I know there is April Fools writing contest, and something about Script Frenzy I heard? Is there a kind of comprehensive list I can find? They seem to be scattered all over the net.

Thanks and good luck on all your writing!

Someone asked me a few weeks (or maybe less) about this print-out that I found when I was working on NaNo a few years ago. I ended up not using it and stored it away somewhere - but after much digging I've found it again!

November Spawned: a Novel Writing Handout (2006)

Apparently there is a 2007 version with a few tweaks and changes in some of the pages.

I'm not sure how useful it is/will be. There are 24 pages but some of the stuff are extras, so you don't need to print them out. There's also an unstucker guide/page for those who hit a road block. :)

There was also another site that had pdf files for character sheets, but it seems like the pdf file was taken off and the html version isn't very good, so unless someone is interested, I won't post the link.

Yes, we're there. And early in fact because we've been busier this September than we have ever been before. And I always love having fresh meat talent around. It makes the season fun each year.

So, tonight I'm going to start off with the RULES OF THE COMMUNITY FOR OCTOBER. And this post gets a date stamp of November 1st so that it stays at the top for the entire season.

Come November, there will be a new set, and it will replace this post at the top of the community.

And I apologize, but this post gets no cut (Rule posts never do). And it's long. But that's how it rolls here...

So... Rule #1...

NO TALKING ABOUT THE NANO WEBSITE

There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about this rule. Yes, it means not talking about the status of the website on whether it is up or down or hacked or whatever. But it's also leaving posts about "Have you seen this thread?", "how do you work this aspect".... etc and so forth. This also falls into including e-mails that you get from being a member on the website.

Basically - if it has to do with the website at all... take it elsewhere.

Reason for this rule: A. We're not affiliated with the site. B. There are multiple communities for nano, and people love cross posting, so I'm not worried that your concerns won't be dealt with. C. it saves over 100-200+ posts a month from your FL.

Rule #2...

INTRODUCTIONS ARE DONE IN THE DAILY INTRO POSTS

I will put up a post every day. In that post, you will do your whole "Hi, I'm Jessica and I'm a NaNoholic" type deal. They are not to be done individual any longer. You all saw how SEPTEMBER was? Now take a wild guess how October will be without this.

Also - no trying to sneak an intro in with a question. They are separate things. Just ask the straight questions and not have a 4 paragraph preamble on who you are, where are you from, and what the kitten's name means.

This benefits you because it will keep people from skimming past your post, and want to actually reply. And you want people to reply, right? :)

Rule #3...

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Golden rule, people. Treat others as how you want to be treated. Mods... *looks around* oh wait, it's just me... ok, I'M in charge...and I will be three things:

1. Straightforward
2. Firm
3. Fun

I can be your best friend, or you will hate me. And I won't apologize for my rulings because I will only rule on something that has been already started as a rule. I will also clarify things and explain them, not outright be pissy. However, I will also respond back with the same treatment as I'm given. My default is nice with an edge of blunt honesty, and that's what I ask all of my friends to be like with me.

This community is meant to be fun, and while I know everyone has their own rights to their own opinions, this is not a place for soapboxing your views on others. Ever member in this community is a friend, and if you can't say anything nice to another member, don't say anything at all.

And if you feel that you can not be a member of a structured community with rules that are enforced for only 2 out of 12 months, then I wish you best on finding another sandbox. But I'm the Queen of this Loony Bin.

And disrespect me? That's the only instant-ban offense. And I am not kidding.

Rule #4...

NO SPAM

As of now, there is no individual posts for pimping. And I'm not talking about hookers...

All mentions of "join this community" or "come visit this site" etc and so forth will be put into a seasonal consolidated post that will go up this weekend and will have a link HERE (obviously when it's up). Come December, this rule is removed until the following October.

That said - regional communities CAN be pimped in the regional friending thread as the regions go up.

Rule #5...

CONCERNING OTHER CONSOLIDATED THREADS...

If there is a post type that is consolidated, that type does not get individual posts. In October, there will be multiple ones. Only the mod will post these, and everyone else does their answers in replies.

This is the list, and tags for them will be in the sidebar of the community:

Daily:

Intros
Writer Prompts
Word Counts (November)
Excerpts (November)

Weekly:

Plot Help - yes. See this post for reason why.

Seasonly:

Friending Post
Pimp Post

And Rule #6...

I reserve the right to change the rules as the current season's community demands it. Being adding a new type of consolidate post, cutting off a certain type, etc. Sometimes I will vote (like I did last year with the plot helps) and sometimes I will make an executive decision. But again, I'm the Queen of the Loony Bin, and there is no committee.

I'm opening the post up for questions, but not comments. Questions I will answer as soon as I am able, comments will be screened or removed depending on their nature.

And as always, I really hope you are able to enjoy this community and use it to enhance your NaNo season. But I am also aware that some people are not comfortable with the structure here. NaNo is about having fun first and foremost. If you do not feel that you will have fun in this type of environment, you are more than welcome to join others and find a community that fits your needs. I won't be insulted, nor will I feel guilt. But I will wish you well, and good luck on your Nano.

It's almost October, folks. Let's get the party started already!

I have sort of a silly question, but I can't seem to find the answer... when you write chapters, and write the words 'Chapter One' or 'Chapter Two', are those words part of your word count, or seperate from it? What if you have chapter titles?

Thanks to anyone who can tell me :)
