[identity profile] alison-sky.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] nanowrimo_lj
So, in light that we have been put into the LJ Spotlight for this week, I decided to post one more Daily Intro Post so that all our wonderful new members can have a place to introduce themselves!

So welcome to the community! Reply here and introduce yourself to everyone else. And I hope you have a great time.

also - if this is your first time here, take a moment to look at the following:

2008 Community Rules - read them if you haven't, and please don't post until you have. It makes us all happy, and keeps the ninja squirrels from attacking needlessly.

2008 NaNo LJ'er Regional Friending Thread!

2008 Pimp and Post Thread - talk about your projects here!

Weekly Plot Help Threads - help your fellow community members with their plots!

Daily Word Count Posts - This is where you post your word counts (except your 50K accomplishment, which you get to shout to the world in it's own post for 5 minutes of fame and glory!)

Daily Excerpts - This is where you post snippets from your NaNo to share with everyone. But keep it within the limits!

all these links are available on the profile page as well as the sidebar links in the community in case you ever need to find them.

EDIT: Talking to support now about recovering the Pimp Thread and the Regional Friends thread. Keep your fingers crossed.

That sounds really interesting. Good for you! :)

And fanfiction doesn't necessarily have to be that. Things like that get published, i.e. someone wrote a sequel to The Secret Garden that was published. It was basically the worst thing I had ever read and left me depressed for days (seriously, I have never had such an emotional reaction to a book...probably because I love those characters so much), but I mean it got published and its out there. I'm hoping yours won't leave people depressed for days, but its possible to get it published.

Thank you! :)

All the published fanfiction I've read has annoyed me, and I sincerely doubt mine would be good enough to be published in any case. Definitely hope it doesn't depress anyone, though; Of Mice and Men is one of my favorite books, so ruining it would crush me. :p Too bad about your experience, as well. The Secret Garden is a good book. Thanks for advising me never to read the 'sequel' to it.

I once found a Buffy the Vampire Slayer "licensed novel" (which is basically professional fanfic, for all intents and purposes; Joss Whedon's office approves the rough overview or outline, and that's about it) that actually was pretty awesome. It was called Go Ask Malice: A Slayer's Diary, and it was about Faith before she came to Sunnydale, basically a combination of illuminating a little of her backstory and clearing up the actual events that led her to being Watcher-less and heading to Sunnydale. Despite the fact that it's written in diary form (epistolary, ya know), which you would totally think wouldn't really work well with Faith, somehow it does; it captures her voice perfectly (the first entry alone is HILARIOUS), it has enough gaps in what Faith knows to be suspenseful, and if you watch the episodes from season three where she talks about her past or whatever, it fits perfectly. So perfectly in fact, that it's almost eerie (you just know the author spent ridiculous amounts of time pouring over the scripts and stuff, to get all the details right)... hell, to be frank, I've seen almost every episode of Buffy, and I've read up through all the Season Eight comics including the Faith arc, and have actually yet to find a spot that doesn't utterly, perfectly jive with her story as told in the book. I sometimes have to remind myself that it isn't actually canon, it just feels like it is. XD

So, if you're a Buffy fan... ordinarily, I'd say "don't buy the novels, they're basically published fanfiction and they're mediocre at best" (although some of them are kinda fun to check out from the library for a bit), but Go Ask Malice is an exception, both in terms of the "published fanfic" quality and BtVS novel quality. :)
