Jumping on the bandwagon, as well.... My cover art! )

The Connecticut NaNos had our meet 'n' greet today (I guess by now yesterday...) and it went great. :) Looking forward to our first caffeine-infusion event on November 1st! (Be jealous... CT has just the most fabulous municipal liaison ever. She is like a minor deity in my eyes!) I hope everyone else is going on the forums and getting signed up with your regional groups and going to events! November is drawing nearer and nearer... I am getting excited, but also a little nervous. I'm ready to start already and just get going with these crazy capers already! :P

Made a NaNoWriMo Desktop Calender. I have put the whole thing behind an lj cut, so gawk away. Oh, and takes if you like. ^_^

Errr, it is Geocities, so be warned; it may become gone if my bandwidth gets eaten up, heh.

Pen Name

Are any of you using a pen name and if so how did you come up with it?

When I did my cover art I used my real name, but had always thought I would use a pen name for this.

I have considered:

D.R. Milligan (my first and middle initials and the last name of my mother's mother's mother's...going back as far as I can (8 generations).

Or Syla Carlton (my grandfathers were Silas and Carlos so this would be base off their names).

Hello! I'm Kai. I'm the local ML for Scotland, based in Edinburgh.

I'm doing not one, but two novels this year :) And then my pen name might get involved too...I haven't decided. I'm posting the novels online as I go...well, it'll be in chapter order, so....

Good Luck everyone!

I wondered if anyone wants to share some fun and nontraditional ways they come up with names, either for the main characters or for background people. Hell, places too.

I have two secret ways that make me smile every time I think of them. First, I got a lot of silly names (or ideas) from the spam I used to get. Sometimes the names of the senders or the address lists were just kind of... off (for example, you'd get names like LaQuisha Chang or Jesus Peterson). Other times they'd have very plain names that wer just so apt that I'd giggle. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you're my junk mail box), I don't get a lot of those anymore, but the other day I got one that was supposedly from a guy named Bart Baggett. That's a gym teacher name if I ever heard one.

Secondly, sometimes I get names from misheard words. I mentioned something about a chocolate martini once and my husband said, "Who's Chaco Bartini?" Or we'll talk about a "restaurant-y, bar-y sort of place," and my brother will say, "Where is Restaurant Ybarri?"

Hello. I'm Angie and this is my first year with NaNoWriMo. I've been working for a several weeks on my plot, character sketches, and all of that. I live outside Mpls/St. Paul and am looking forward to plunging into the insanity of November! Writing among the ongoing chaos of cats, two kids, work and general hoo-ha of life will certainly provide endless hours of entertainment and frustration. My current personal goal is to create more balance in my life. So I say to myself... Hey - why not write a novel in November? Yes, that's a good idea.

My book cover. Created in about 5 minutes, after a 20 minute search for images. The cover actually depicts a somewhat pivotal scene in the book, and I'm thoroughly shocked I found the picture. Speaking of--disclaimer. The picture is not mine. It is taken from an oil painting by Chris Thomas. The artist does not endorse my writing, nor is he even aware of my existence. No copyright infringement is intended. This cover was made strictly for fun./disclaimer

Gee, that title sounds wierd. Anyway, thanks to the pioneering efforts of one Nanowrimo--ee, named Ceri, author Neil Gaiman has posted on his journal about Nano. He wrote:

I'm always happy to plug NoNoWriMo each year, and wish all those taking part the best of luck. Make your word counts (and make your words count). Write cool things. Have fun.

I absolutley love Neil and his writing (this icon is off one of his sandman characters, death). It's really nice to get some support from a published and well-known author. Yay!

I'm begining to feel even more excited than before.

For any wrimo's who happen to be in my area: check out the regional forums on the official website! (Oregon:: elsewhere).

i'm trying to organize a pre-Nov plot-fest and get-together.

Tomorrow, Oct 26th
Newport Starbucks
5:15ish to 6:30ish (or whenever people decide to leave, or we get kicked out)

Anyone who is in the area and can make it is welcome! Totally informal, just a meet-n-greet time, and perhaps planning for a local mid-month-crisis-prevention meeting.

Just leave a message here or in my PM at the nano site (same username) if you have any questions!

Happy writing!

I couldn't resist. This is the basic idea. I'll touch it up sometime. And the blurb on the back is going to go on an illustration all its own. I'm just too lazy at the moment.

...And for some reason, I'm embarrassed. Bah. But oh well, I'm having so much fun.

I know there've been a few posts about character names and I wanted to bring people's attention to this that I found in the build up to last years Nano.

It's an etymology and name reference site and it helped me a lot.
The Name Themes section is pure gold dust.

I have the pre- WriMo jitters that is strong right now. I have to say, I am so extremely nervous and excited to be doing this. It's my 1st WriMo. Anyway, I have formulated better ideas of where my story is going, I just have to scribble these thoughts on one notepad. So the story matches whats going on with the characters. Its cool I know the genre, and the tone of it.

But Im just so nervous, but its cool. Its the sort of nervousness you get before a big race or something. Anyway, my story is a dark fantasy.

...about a man William who awakens with something missing. He doesnt know what he lost, or how he lost it. Soon after he finds evidence of an inhabitant in his house...and upon a somewhat dramatic discovery of them, he finds that they hold the knowlege of what was stolen from him. Yet they need him for thier own reasons. It is with this strange symbiotic relationship they set off on a quest to find it. With time always against them, they brave the perils, meet other amazing individuals and discover things about themselves. How much will he sacrifice to regain what he has lost?

I don't have much dialogue, but based apon some imaginary texts I have scribbled, that may provide some help. Anyway, I think this community is really the coolest thing. I love reading so many of your entries, partly because it gets me a little revved up. Anyone care to make the St. Crispin's Day speech? (Henry V). Because this is beginning to feel like a big moment.

Yes, you read that subject line correctly. Or you didn't read it at all, depending, but now I bet you will. I don't have enough time yet to make my cover, but probably will end up doing it just to procrastinate once I really have no time and it's the end of november and I have 10,000 words to go and semester exams coming up and relationships imploding and serious lack of personal hygiene and less than three hours of sleep per night and omg please shoot me now.

...that aside, the real reason I'm posting (other than to spam your friends lists, because, of course, it's essential to my evil plot to take over the world) right now is to give you a chance to dare me. I think I've finally decided on the plot bunny I'll be torturing this month, and am fairly certain I'll stick with it. Yes, I know. This is the fourth time I've said that. But, really, how many more do I have time to come up with?

So. It's going to be mainly character based, and will be about a high school age girl who, although extremely intelligent, has been dumbing herself down to fit into "popular" crowds at school. Her popular quarterback boyfriend has just dumped her (for reasons I have yet to come up with: suggestions?) and she's completely devastated. When her school starts a matchmaking club where, if you're single, you give them personal stats and they match you up with other students for dates, she swallows her pride and joins.

This will, of course, spiral wildly out of control and cause much havoc and fun character development. This, though, is your chance to give me guy characters that the girl will be paired with. I have a few in mind, but there will be many, and I'd like to pick and choose the most interesting. Make them as odd as you like, and I'll try and incorporate as many as possible. Thanks in advance, but if you don't have the time (or ideas) to throw some stuff at me, you're excused. Much love. (Six days!)

Hi, I'm Claire and obviously, a newbie to the community ((why else would I be doing the obligatory "I'm new, love me" post?))

I hail from Rugby, England, I'm sixteen ((due to be seventeen on the 25th - not much work going to be done after then!)) and this is my second year doing NaNo WriMo. Last year, I have to say, I failed miserably - mostly because I was on work experience for half of the month and partly because I didn't quite understand what I was being asked to do.

This year though, I'm all prepared! Bwahahaha! I've planned out my plot and my characters and I'm _positive_ I'll get more than 5000 words this year!

The idea came to me in August, when I was on holiday and saw this beautiful ceramic chest ((which I then bought - bwahaha!)). Fortunately, I didn't start writing it then.

Well, I've signed up for NaNo. Last year I planned meticulously, knew exactly where I was going to go -- and failed miserably. This year, I'm going on a wing and a prayer. I have some vague ideas, but I won't know exactly what I'm going to write until Nov. 1.

I do have a title, however! And I made a cover, 'cause all the cool kids are doing it. It's the first time I've ever photomanipped; twas very fun. Image was originally from Getty Images.
