*waves* Hello, everyone, I go by the name Ariaste on NaNo... Last year was my first. I managed to get 7.2K words, but then I had to go on an EVIL VACATION to EVIL MEXICO to stay with EVIL RELATIVES.

I took the novel up again in March, when I read it and found out that it was a glorious thing that I literally couldn't believe I had anything to do with. I've now brushed it up to about 20K. :)

I'm all ready for NaNo this year, I've armed myself with a plot and am now pointedly ignoring it for fear that I'll over-think it. However, I can be easily convinced to talk about it. Let's face it, who can't be cajoled into talking about new plots, eh?

I've been a member of this group for some time, and it just occured to me that I really ought to be posting a bit... So yeah. Here I am, here's my pen, let's write this bitch.

((Note: >.> Is it just me, or does that have the feel of an introductory speech at Al-Anon?))

Hi all! *waves*

I just heard about this today. I have no idea what I'll be writing about.

Advice for the planning stages?

Write back at ya, [livejournal.com profile] lady_of_water.

I have only the loosest assortment of ideas at this point, but I'm still seeing two major ways that I could go for this year's NaNo. First off, there's my intrigue/mystery/thriller set sometime in the very near future, so that people have cell phone like objects but also nifty sci-fi stuff when I want. In this, a man has just woken up from his elective memory-erasing surgery and has to figure out where to go from here. There's a woman, a mysterious organization, and lots of big strong policemen who shoot well. I've never read books like this, but it was originally an idea for an interactive fiction game, and I have played IF like it (and loved it).

My other idea takes a small group of main characters in something like a normal, present-day setting, but there's something odd about the neighborhood grocery store. I'm thinking it's somehow a portal to someplace, or it gives the group useful but weird knowledge about things in the normal world, and they have to... um... save the village from the impending mudslide? I don't know. I'm leaning towards this one because I don't want to ruin the other one, like I did my great idea for last year's NaNo (sigh).

I'll delurkify for a moment...

M'name's Morgan, Darksong Shadowhart over on the forums (where I really don't post much at all,) and this year marks my third(!) attempt at NaNoWriMo. Nothing much has been salvageable from years past, so I really don't feel like going much in depth there at all, except to say this: it was very ugly.

Anyway, this year will mark two new things for my writing: firstly, I'm at college now, and taking three foreign languages this semester. This shows that my insanity level is off the charts- college is gonna be a double edged sword for my writing- there's the 5+ hours a day of homework, but I can stay up 'til 4 AM writing without getting yelled at- if I manage to write instead of... oh, say... playing Puzzle Pirates. Secondly, this is the first year that I'll have people around me doing NaNo- this is to say, the first year I'll be able to do any face-to-face enemity and support.

As for a plot? I've got nothing. Whatsoever. There's not even any particular characters wandering around to do anything interesting with at this point. I'm planning on highly caffienating myself on October 31, starting at about 11:30, and turning on the laptop at midnight and seeing what comes out, b'sides, "crap, I should be finishing my Linguistics."

Yup. That's where I'm at right now. I'm hoping college will be a little less stressy by then, I'll be into a vaguely normal routine, and I'll know how to deal with im-bloody-possible linguistics assignments, like the one I should be doing now. :-) For any of you who need to get 'hold of me, you are perfectly welcome to friend me, and all the contact stuff in my userinfo is correct.

Peace, love and pretzels!

[livejournal.com profile] jessknoch requested to hear about my NaNo plot. Blame it on her. ~_^

Okay... There's this angel... And a demon... And it's called For the Love of An Angel (FLAA for short). And it's set right before, during, and mostly after the Apocalypse.

Since a weakness of mine would be to make either the demon or the angel a Mary Sue if it was female, they're both gonna be guys.* Haven't thought of names yet.

At some point in the story, the demon is going to be amused and slightly disappointed/scornful of the most wonderful book in existance, Good Omens. *thunderclap*

I've also figured out how some of the humans are going to survive.
True Wiccans (not the fluffy bunny** sort) -- Due to the surge of celestial and infernal energies, the true Wiccans, having earned the protection of the Goddess, shall not be harmed by the fire and brimstone...
The Atheists -- They don't believe in fire and brimstone raining from the heavens, and postulate that since they don't believe in it, it can't hurt 'em.
The Christians Who Didn't Really Believe (AKA bastards who make a lot of noise so as to make money) -- Their punishment is staying on earth after everyone else has gone to Heaven.*** On the other hand, this is people like televangelists... *chews lip* Crap.

If you have any ideas on how a few more people could survive, please do tell.

And I'm not going to talk anymore, for fear of overthinking it and getting tired of it before November.

So, what about all of your people's plots?

-----

*Also, due to popular demand, there will be subtle slashy undertones. Enough that the fanfiction authors will smile knowingly, nod sagely, take the character's wrists, and lead them off, calling back to me, "Thanks hon, we'll take it from here."
**How many fluffy bunny Wiccans does it take to change a lightbulb? *ditzy voice* NONE! We just think happy thoughts at our quartz crystals and they GLOW, OMG!
** Funny ol' world, innit? I'm actually a Wiccan. ^_^

Wow... You know it's fall when the nano group explodes in love! I've counted more posts in the group the past 3 days than probably in the last 3 months!

Guess I'll take the few seconds I have while procrastinating from my job to introduce myself. I'm Alison Sky, and this is my second year doing the Nano. -=points proudly to certificate on wall=- Last year my novel When the Lights Go Down hit the 50,000 mark and went a bit beyond... and of course I really haven't touched it since. But that will change, oh yes. -=rubs hands gleefully=-

I've been writing for over 14 years now, mainly fanfiction in the Star Wars universe which can be seen on my website The Spaceport, and for the past few years I've been fighting to get a novel actually finished to be able to join the "big leagues".

This year I'm going to be working on a novel that I actually plotted out being in 1996 called Child of Hermes. In preperation, I've been taking my main character Anton and gave him his own LJ under the name [livejournal.com profile] anton_coh and made him join the [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse comunity to work on the excercises there. Its helped me get a lot of insight on how his mind works and what he feels towards certain people. So I've got a 42 page outline (god help me...) and ten years of brainstorming to help me get this project going, and hopefully I will not only succeed, but finish the damn thing this time!

I'm also going to have the community [livejournal.com profile] sky_writings going for people to get excercises, discussions, and as a place to talk about problems and have the community help. It's not just for Nano, either, so if you join, be prepared for year round conversations.

I'm always available to help people along if they hit snags while writing, so just join the community and post a message and not only myself, but everyone else there will be ready to help.

Can't wait to talk to you all more.

I'm new to NaNoWriMo this year, am waiting patiently for the signup date to pass so I can get increasingly excited about taking part. I'm sure once I'm all signed up the nerves will hit me like a tonne of bricks, but until then I'm fairly relaxed about it all.

A little background about me: I'm a fanfiction writer of the Spuffy persuasion. My longest story to date is Love in Vein, which is being written in three parts and currently totals 280'000 with two parts completed and the third underway, and should be something nearer 350'000 by the time it's completed. I've written original fiction before, and have transferred one story that was written as Spuffy into original fiction - Killing Game.

I'm looking to write about 65'000 words during NaNoWriMo month. I've reserved a story for the occasion, one that shouldn't exceed my chosen wordcount and it's been planned so I can sit back and relax. I would have liked to have written the other story I had in mind, but I haven't got it planned well and it would be too long to write in a month.

Shame.

I'm an odd mix of nervousness and excitement about NaNoWriMo. Part of me fears it, and part of me can't wait to get going.

I think my muse is desperate for release, he just wants to get on with the story now.

That's me...happy to be a part of this community and hoping that NaNoWriMo goes well for all of us!

I heard about this over the past couple years. But was never sure about what it really was until today. When i saw what it was all about, i wanted to take part. But i was kind of uncertain. But with my friend bittenandstaked taking part well, it gave me the courage to decide to take part too and challenge myself a little to finally do what i have wanted to which is write a full length original fiction.

So, a bit about me. I originally started off writing fanfiction, in the spuffy fandom. I've been writing for about a year and a half, but i've loved the idea of writing since i was about 8, always having wanted to write one day.And being a university student, it will be an extra bit of a challlenge to meet my target. But i also know that having this challenge will be good for me, it'll keep me focused on my writing when i could otherwise get pushed offcourse as far as it is concerned.

I have my idea in place, and a rough idea of the word count i want to reach. And i'm really looking forward to the sign-up date getting here so i can really get everything planned to the most minor of details.

I'm also kind of nervous, because i've never taken part in this or any other writing challenge before, but there's a first time for everything. And i'm looking forward to this.

So, that's my introduction. And i'll be waiting nervously but patiently for sign-ups and the starting date.

Well, i figured that seeing as people are sharing their plot ideas, i'd jump in and do the same. I thought i had decided on my story, but two other ideas are creeping in to my mind

Idea 1

Is an original rewrite of a fanfiction i wrote. When i wrote the fanfic version, it was because i was too afraid to try original. It's about a girl who is beaten by her mother. The girl is almost 18 and her friends are aware something is wrong. But they're not sure what. But really this is a love story in disguise, but it has a lot of angst too. The real story is really about how, the girl falls for her mother's on- off younger boyfriend, and the hurdles they overcome to be together, but then the tragedies they suffer later. A lot of this story was used as an outlet for me to write out my pain over something that happened in my family a few years ago. But to tell you what that is would give away the plot completely, and that would be no fun.

Idea 2

This fiction would be in diary format. Again, taken from my own personal experiences. I was bullied through my entire school life, and the idea is basically the personal diary of a 15 year old girl who is being bullied, and it is a year in her life. Delving into the mond of a girl being bullied. The experience of it, the fears and the pain.

Idea 3

This i tried a couple chapters as a fanfiction, but it just wouldn't work. It's way more out there. Again, a bit of a love story and much more controversial.See i'm a theology and religious studies major. And in class one day, i got this idea. It is set both in heaven, hell and earth. It stars an angel, a fallen angel, God and the devil. You're probably thinking huh? Well, here's the idea. God, well he's kind of the bad guy. We learn that god has some human attributes and basically i give him human faults. God is in love with one of the angels. But she is in love with another evil. God sets up the angel so that the council of angels banish him to hell. Because whilst they do not completely believe he did what he was accused of, they cannot question god's word. There is only one angel willing to do anything to prove his innocence. So, together they work to prove his innocence. They meet on earth, where for a certain amount of hours per day, they are undetected, and can do as they please. They simply seem like normal human beings. And over time they find a way to bring God down.

So... yeah those are my ideas. Now just to decide which one i should write.

Honestly, every time you lot brag about your novels (in an endearing way, rest assured) I get hit with bunches of amazing titles. I've done two Nanos, and neither of my novels have acceptable titles attached. How on earth do you do it? Is there a secret I need to know about naming my things? Or are you all just secretly brilliant?

For the past two years, I've approached Nano-season with great expectations. The first year I fell flat on my face when my personal life took a nose-dive into the toilet... it was all i could do to tread water in the bowl and hope that no one flushed.

Last year was filled with a lot of financial anxiety, so while my intentions were good, my efforts lacked.

But this year... ohhhhh this is the year.

I've got four plots that I'm kicking around. All of them have been in my head for various amounts of time. All of them are still very rough. I'm thinking that in order to narrow my choices down, I'm going to try to flesh out each idea and see which one has the most potential. Which characters come forward and seem most fully developed. If anyone has any other ideas for how to choose a plot/flesh it out/cool character development exercises - let me know, I'm definitely willing to listen.

Last year I armed myself with a copy of No Plot? No Problem!. Much like my 50,000 words, I didn't get around to that either. But it's here on my desk now. Staring at me. Mocking me. I intend to have it read soon.

Blank books.
Note books.
Assorted pens.

I buy these things because I think they'll make me write. So far, they've made me arrange my writing space creatively, but I've done little writing in them.

So here's what I'd like to know, if you feel inclined to answer... are there certain writing exercises you do before November? How much prep do YOU do, I know that varies from writer to writer, but if you do prepare, what do you do? When you've got multiple plots bouncing around in your brain, what do you do to choose one?

Well, since everyone seems to be making introductions tonight, I figured I'd join in.

So, this will be my first year doing NaNo. My primary reason for doing this - aside from love of writing, naturally - is that I need to stop wanting everything to be perfect. The amount of fiction I do not write because it's not perfect is incredible. I need to overcome this. NaNo seems like the perfect chance.

Nine times out of ten, I can't write unless I have a plot. On the other hand, sometimes when I write, my characters decide to go, screw you, and do exactly as they please without consulting me. So, I'm going to make myself some sort of loose guidelines, and see what comes out of it. So far, I don't really have characters or a plot, but I have an image stuck in my head of two little boys (one of who may end up in prison a decade later) stealing apples from their neighbour. Who may be a witch.

It's also possible I'll be writing in Finnish, which is my native language. The thing is, 50,000 words in Finnish is a lot longer a story than 50,000 words in English. So that should be fun as well, should I choose to go through with it.

Oh well. No matter what, I'm really looking forward to having an excuse to write something that's not very good. :)

After discovering the community in a post here, I have decided to involve my main character from my NaNoWriMo story in [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse. I think it will help me develop his character a lot, though I'll be setting his commentary in the timeline after the story happens. It should be fun!

Update: My character can be found at [livejournal.com profile] darrell_ramsey.

Last year's NaNo was fairly awful, but had a few good ideas thrown in amongst the slush.

This year's will be in the same universe, but better written, and with a bit of hopping around in time.

The characters )

The plot - Four georgian secret agents are ordered by HM, after a request from Oxford Uni, after a request from a student (Adrastria), after a request from her Daddy (Pluto) after a demand from His Little Pumpkin, to acquire a vampire rabbit and take it to the North Pole, the place where the Underworld and ours meet.

Much hilarity ensues. Honest.

Okay, okay, this might be posted somewhere on the NaNo FAQ, but I'm too lazy to go there. And I'd rather talk to you nice folks, anyway. ;-)

For quite awhile, I've been pretty set on continuing a story/trilogy thingie for NaNo this year. Thing is, I think I'd rather do a completely new story instead, I guess to capture that whole "a novel in a month" magic.

Anyway, I have this sort of...idea/premise for a new story, but no plot (I know, no plot, no problem, right? That doesn't work so well for me). I know that NaNo is done on the honor system, but is it technically legal to work on both stories and to spread the 50,000 between the two?

Just wondering, 'cause it would be really great if I could try to do the new story (if I can't figure out a plot by Nov.) but still have the old one in case if it doesn't work out--without losing any time/words.

Thanks!
