I had a vague outline for a scene where my MC is interviewing a random selection of people. None of these people were supposed to be proper characters, just catalysts for plot development. But one of them suddenly started developing a personality of her own, and now she's a major supporting character :D

I love it when that happens! Anybody else had similar experiences?

For those of you available and in need of sprints, I'm on AIM as zheyrryhnn. I'll run sprints today for anyone interested. No, this isn't an 'official' room, but I"m online and my writing partner [livejournal.com profile] auburnimp and I would really like some sprinting buddies. I run 15 minute sprints with 15 minute breaks, which works out to a half hour of writing every hour.

PM me if you can't get into the room, it's called amnanosprints.

See you there.

I am at 11,000 words.

Having moved into a new house in an entirely new part of the country, I have been slightly preoccupied. I am still busy with job hunting and settling into my new home. With sixteen days left, do I have hope? I need 39,000 words. How should I make it happen?

Thank you!

So... today I'm going to start my new idea of challenge threads. They are going to be completely random, so bear with me and I hope that they will help.

Here's how this thread is going to work:

You are going to reply with your current word count and ONLY your word count IF you are below the minimum word count number below.

November 14th - You should be at least as 23,338 if you're doing the 1667 a day method.

I will reply with a random plot point. I don't know what you're writing, and I don't want to (not for this at least!). But you are going to use this plot point and write it into your NaNo today somewhere.

Skip back and add it into what you've already written (do not delete anything you wrote to do this!). Add it in right now. Insert a page break and write a scene "in the future" or a "flashback" to something before the novel started.

At the end of the day, reply back with where your word count it. Do your best to hit the magic number.

And if you are OVER the magic number... you are free to also throw in random plot points for people. Just get creative. And also since you don't know the true ages of the writers, keep it family friendly, ok?

So let's begin *cracks knuckles*

and god help me the comments are going to kill my e-mail cause I will be putting my notifs on

I do not see this addressed on the Web-site-which-shall-not-be-named (why do I feel like Bill O'Reilly talking about that one guy on MSNBC?), so am asking here what the opinion is concerning introductions/forwards being included in the word count.  I suppose I am already bending the rules a little as my "novel" is actually an anthology written entirely in November, and it just seems like an introduction/forward about the stories would be useful and should be included in the word count.  Any thoughts?

I've been trying to avoid it, but I've come to a point where I really need to jump forward in time a little bit and not fill that time with empty crap - I was thinking of just putting a little line in there or something, as some novelists do. Have you guys done this, or have you thought of a better way? I don't want to end the chapter yet.

Thanks!

so, i haff another query.
is it normal that i'm doing my writing between Microsoft Word and my notebooks...
is there a better computer program to be using for it, or is Word my best option?
this may seem odd, but it's something that bugs me a lot....

...beauty always is."

Wowwwww. I almost cut that line. It's such an utterly over-the-top whiny emo teenager thing to say that the writer in me recoiled from even typing it.

Then I reminded myself that my narrator is an over-the-top whiny emo teenager - and that in her world, those words are gospel truth.

Just a reminder, to you and to myself:

LET THE MUSE SPEAK TRUTH.

Refine her words later.

That's all.

Novelist Amy Bender surrounds her writing desk with a dozen synonyms for the word "faith." Why? It helps remind her that, however confusing her story may seem at the moment, its point will become clear if she just keeps writing. And it always does.

As you enter your fourteenth day of writing, make and post a sign that will help you remember that things are going to work out great in the end.

Today's flashcard from the No Plot? No Problem! writing kit, the genius brainchild of Chris Baty.

AIM ROOM: nanosprints
TIME:9pm EST/8pm CST/7pm MST/6pm PST UNTIL 12am EST/11pm CST/10pm MST/9pm PST
WHAT: NaNo sprints! Write as many words as you can during the allotted time, and see how many words other people can manage.

Come and sprint in 10 minute bursts, at the :10, :30 & :50. There will be a 10 minute break between each sprint. That works out to be 30 minutes of sprinting for every hour. If you've read this post, please don't ask when the next sprint will be or how long it will run. I will give a two minute warning before each sprint.

I know the schedule might not work for everyone. If that's true for you, explore other options.

Fun fact: it is actually possible to write without sprinting.

Feel free to come in ahead of time and chat to fellow NaNo'ers.

Any questions, AIM me at 'callita623'.

You can invite yourself! All you need to do is in the menu click AIM/Chat/Buddy chat. Put your name there instead and in the place of room name, put nanosprints. Easy!

Rules are same as always:

- Discuss your novel. Ask people for ideas if you're stuck.
- DON'T discuss religion, politics, lifestyle choices.
- Don't tear each other down. Not on plot choice OR word count.

please remember that while the sprints are taking place there will be no talking as it distracts from the 'stop' time. some have their chats set to blink and the blinks take away from knowing when to stop. if you are asked to stop talking, please do so immediately.

Never, ever be the first to talk in the Sprint room. There MAY be a Sprint going on.

if you live outside the U.S. and are unsure what time this is for you (or inside the U.S. and don't really have a grasp of time zones), please refer to this handy website. http://www.worldtimezone.com

I came sliding in today at 50,848 words today, thus completing my goal for a seven-for-seven record.

I haven't decided on a suitable reward for this yet, although the real reward shouldn't come until the book is finished. This may not be for awhile.

So for everyone else: Do you plan on rewarding yourself for finishing NaNo? How so?

The story I'm writing doesn't have the traditional chapter breaks (I.E. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc), but more of a break between 'chapters'.  It helps with the flow, since it is in first person, but even with stories that weren't first person, I either seperated chapters with a symbol, or just left a space between chapters.

Has anyone else done this, and what non-traditional breaks have you used?

Ugh

Well, the good news is I am trying. I have had a story in my head for about 4 years and every time I tried to write it I would write a chapter, go back and read it, realize that it wasn't on paper as it was in my head, get mad, scrap the story and stop writing. When I heard about NaNoWriMo I thought this would e the thing that would help me to finally push through.

Although I am writing I am off to a very slow start. You see, I sit in front of a computer all day at work and when I get home I have a hrad time wanting to sit in front of a computer during my off time. When I have done my best short writing it was due to my being so inspired that I couldn't do anything else but write. I am not experiencing that inspiration so any writing I do seems to be a chore. I will keep pushing through though and hope to finish strong.

Besides that problem I also get really slowed down by doing research for my story. I am not writing a technical story or even one that is based on lots of history or complex in any nature. it is just a story of a man and a situation he has trouble coming to terms with but even still, there are instances of needing to know what kind of Christmas tree they would realistically have, where they might chop one down legally, what is actually happening in the years when he is a child. Location stuff, etc.... it really is a buzz kill, it takes me out of the moment and slows my momentum. So, I guess my question is, any suggestions? Am I alone in experiencing this problem? Thanks!
