*waves* Hello, all. Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte and I just recently signed up for Nanowrimo. Did it last year, and didn't even come close to winning, and would've signed up earlier this year only I had no computer for two weeks. :-o

My novel is titled The Seventh Law of Parallel and is a contemporary/high fantasy set alternatively in a fictional world and in modern day Los Angeles. I chose this one because I've been researching for it for years, but have never actually written anything. Most of my other ideas I've at least started, so that would be cheating. *g*

However, because of the computer problems I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. I have a lot of research done for the background of the fictional world, but I have a shortage of characters and only a seed of a plot. So, since I've seen other people post here asking for suggestions/encouragement, I thought I'd do the same.

The gist of the plot is this: two worlds exist side by side, our world and one world that is the home of everything we imagine. These worlds are subconsciously aware of each other, but only meet in "dreams." The two realities are governed by seven "laws of parallel," the seventh of which is the what I just described. My novel is about what happens when that law is broken, when a faerie girl, Githre of House Mirage, escapes from the vampire Overlord Nystorun into our world, thus sundering the barrier between the two.

So far, I only have three characters:

Githre--A faerie (in the sense of the Fair Folk, Sidhe, etc., not the little winged pixies), daughter of the Prince of House Mirage, who was captured by Nystorun in an attempt to turn her and forge a blood ties alliance between himself and her house. Picture actress Zuleikha Robinson as she looked in the movie Hidalgo. In her attempt to escape, her magic accidentally opens a portal to our world and she stumbles through, followed by Nystorun.
Nystorun--Lord of NightCrawl estate and manor and Overlord of the vampires. Formerly of Faerie House Nightmare, which is allied with the vampires and Nystorun in particular, he wanted to consolidate his power by forcing blood ties with the unaligned Houses. Kidnapping Githre was the first step in that plan, however after following her to our world his ambitions have shifted to conquering both realities. I'm thinking
Nyshada--A vampire also drawn from Faerie House Nightmare who is Seneschal to Bladryvel, Lord of BloodMoon estate and manor. Like all of her race, she desires power and wants to eventually rule as Overlord. In order to do this, she must first remove Nystorun, and thus becomes an unlikely ally to Githre in her attempt to thwart Nystorun's plans under the principle that "the enemy of the enemy is my friend." However she is *not* to be trusted, especially once her goals are met.

I need several more, obviously, including Earth-human characters who will join in the fight, which is whom I feel you all would be most qualified to help me with. I need to create a small resistance band who would be the only ones aware of Nystorun's plan (never let it be said he lacks subtlety *g*) and who hope to defeat it before that changes. Underdog types probably, and for fun I'd like some of them to be fandom dwellers. :-) I also need a few Earth folk who might be tempted to help Nystorun, probably for the promise of power and "eternal" life.

Hope to hear from some of you.

Hiya! I've decided to jump on the bandwagon and produce a cover for my novel, even though I don't really need one since I'm writing fanfiction. I have no idea if the story will be anything like the cover, or if I will even keep the title, but at least I had some fun in Photoshop! ;-)

My first NaNoWriMo ever will be a story I'd been working on with an ex-girlfriend of mine. It centers around Elena and Aurora, a peasant girl and a deposed princess.

The plot:
Elena is a solid, skeptical peasant girl. At 21, she is not yet married, and decides to go out into the world to either seek her fortune or find a husband.
Aurora is a princess and is vaguely unhappy with her lot in life, but not sure why. Her parents are worried because at 16, she hasn't shown any interest in choosing a prince (or plucky peasant boy disguised as a prince) to marry. (I may switch the ages, I don't know.) In order to find her a husband to ensure the royal lineage, they hold a classic fairytale contest, involving such trials as a Maze of Thorns and a Hill of Glass.
Coming to the capital city, Elena is excited to hear about a contest. Upon hearing that the prize is "the greatest treasure in the land", she enters (yes, they let her and there is a perfectly good reason). And wins, and is terribly surprised to find that the prize is, in fact, the princess.
Aurora, being an honorable young lady, insists upon the rules of the contest being upheld. There is a short legal battle, and Elena and Aurora are given some gold, some horses, and 24 hours to get out of the city.
I foresee some interesting conflict here. Aurora is fairly classic, as princesses go--steeped in the rules of chivalry and courtly love, sheltered, and likes pretty things. Tammy played her (of course) as a fairly devout Goddess worshipper (although I had to restrain her from becoming some kind of priestess-mage). In response, I made Elena an atheist (there is a good reason for this in the story as well). She's also extremely unsophisticated and realistic to the point of being pessimistic, and probably a little opportunistic. I just have to make sure that I don't force them to react to the point of being caricatures.
The story itself is not a problem. I've got a few scenarios, some of which involve pirates, planned. And if I completely poop out, I can just resurrect Aurora's evil uncle.
The working title for my book is "Ramble On", after, of course, the Zep song. My journal for this book is: [livejournal.com profile] ramble_on_book. I will be posting as often as I feel like. If anyone would like to make an icon for me they are more than welcome.

WHO ELSE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO?

No plot, no title, nothing. Show of hands?

For those who still have no idea what they're going to do, here's a small suggestion that got me writing again once I was stuck. I know there's not much time left for it, but that's the fun of it!

Try getting a copy of Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. If you don't have time to read the whole thing, just browse through it long enough to get the general idea. There may also be some of the poems online.

(For those unfamiliar with this--we had it in school, but I'm not sure who else did--it's a series of poems/monologues by different characters in a small town, written from their point of view after they're dead and can reflect on the events in their life.)

Then try writing some monologues on similar lines for some of your characters. You can get several different points of view on the same incident, and one idea generally leads into another. Why did this guy do that? Why did this girl react that way when he did that? What did she then do in reaction to it? Does she wish now that she'd done something different? When I did this, I started out with two characters and a vague idea, and wound up with ten or twelve characters and a pretty good plot. If you know what happened and how the characters feel about it years later, you now know what they ought to be doing in your plot.

Hope this helps somebody....you may now return to your regularly scheduled panic mode. :)

So... last night I got this great idea that's been kicking around in my head for a while. The characters are essentially the same people emotionally as my previously-planned plot, only now there's no fantasy anywhere in sight. I'm more comfortable with it than the other thing, though, and I'm getting some minor characters finally speaking to me that were completely silent before.

So I'm completely changing my idea with 4 days left to go. :) Now I'm beginning to sound like a veteran!

The coolest thing? My partner also signed up for NaNo, so she'll understand my monofocused silence for a month!

This is my first year doing NaNo, and I'm getting a little freaked out. I've had a general idea kicking around in my head for several years, but the problem is that while I've got the characters and the build-up and the crisis fairly well defined, I'm not at all sure what happens after that, how my characters find redemption.

I'd feel better going into this if I had at least some idea where my story was going.

Help my characters find resolution! )

Also, I have a few scenes of this already written, some of which I'm happy with, some of which I'm not. I'm considering re-writing these scenes (possible POV change), but one of my friends has told me that this is a bad idea, and I should just start NaNo where I left off in my previous writing. Any opinions?

Hey guys, I'm just asking for help with some plot twists!

Okay, I have a lot of my plot worked out, but I was hoping maybe someone could come up with some really cool plot twists that I could shove in somewhere. *loves the plot twists!*

If you're anything like me, you've never heard of "The Snowflake Process" before. Reading it over, I'm thinking I'll be using as much as I can during the next month, starting now.

Here's the link if you're interested. I found it on the NaNoWriMo site by following a link from mjryan's earlier post.

Does anyone else get the feeling that November is conspiring against any attempts they are to make at reaching 50k?

I know November's going to be hideously busy for me - I'm going to see Pirates of Penzance on the 3rd, I'm going shopping on the 14th, the Tempest on the 17th, The Hollies on the 19th, it's my birthday on the 25th, and I'm going to London on the 30th.

That's not to mention all my homework and preparation for the year 12 exams in October!

Why, oh why do I not like coffee??

OK, T-Minus 4 days until we start writing. This is going to by my first NaNo.

How many people have a complete story planned out? Because I only have a very rough premise going. I know about 3 of my characters. But from hearing some of you talk, you've been planning for quite some time and know exactly what is going to happen in your story, you just have yet to type it out.

Is my strategy a recipe for failure? I figure with fewer restrictions, my story will be able to branch off into any direction it goes. Have a beginning and a preferred ending, and let the middle flow from your brain to your fingertips.

Comments please!

Right, this year I'm going to be working on a 50,000-word equivalent of 'Truth or Dare' and I'm looking for people to play along.

The idea is this; post here tiny scraps of plot. Things that I'll be able to squeeze a days typing out of and whatever is posted will, without exception, become a part of my Nano.

Each post will become a days typing unless two posts fit well into one days typing or I feel like I can run with one post for longer. I'll post one of these requests every Thursday or if I ever feel entirely uninspired mid-week. Once I have enough ‘dares’ for the week, the remaining dares will be put on hold until the last two days of Nanowrimo when I will write every single unused dare into my final stretch of word count.

Common sense says that I should put a limitation on what can be dared but I'm not going to. These can be anything. I've already had a request for penne smut to be included in the later chapters. If you tell me to kill my main character in the first hundred words, I will. If I'm told to do a chapter in the style of a Broadway musical, I'll do it. If I'm asked to have my characters spend 10,000 words in a box, they'll spend 10,000 words in a box.

The Characters that already have been given to me can be found here and it's not too late to contribute your own.

Thank you to everyone who's already helped me with this and please, if you don't comment, I have no nano. :P

Went into my NaNoWriMo folder for the first time in, oh, a year and found a file called whatILearnedFromNaNo.txt, which I'm thinking I copied from a "List Five Things You Learned From NaNo This/Last Year" thread on the forums. Hallo all. This is my first year actually devoting the entire month to NaNo and finally decided to introduce myself. I've been having trouble writing anything decent (which could be due to a severe lack of sleep) and figured this might be the perfect way to push through this and get a novel written. Granted, it will most definitely need some heavy editing in a month or so afterwards, but hopefully I can at least get it completed.

Anyway, I've had a plot idea bouncing around in my head for three months (which actually came to me after too many viewings of Kingdom Hospital and reading over my Egypt papers from my senior year of mythology) and I finally decided to expand on it once my previous idea didn't work.

A Nefarious Purpose )

I've never written anything like this before, so I'm a little worried about getting a severe block in the middle. And college doesn't help too much, either. But I do have an extensive outline (a first for me), which could help me quite a bit.

And no, Anubis will not have the head of a jackal when he's on earth. I'm taking a bit of creative license in that respect.

I've yet to introduce myself. My name's Cara Dean, I'm a high school freshman from Connecticut, and this is my first time participating.

I know how my novel will be written (I'll rotate which character's story I'm telling each chapter. There are four main characters, with four separate stories.) I've done detailed outlines of each main character, and somewhat less detailed outlines of the other characters I've thought of.

Alas, I have no plot at all. Inspiration hasn't hit. And I have a hard time forcing myself to concentrate on thinking about my novel. Fortunately, I've gotten sick and won't be going to school tomorrow. Instead, I will be lying on my couch planning for nano.

So anyway, what gets you guys thinking?

Woohoo!

Figured I should probably crawl out of my hole in the ground and introduce myself (and my story), so -
I'm Brittany, High School Senior out of WNY (and yes, I *am* crazy for doing this my senior year with all the classes I'm taking, thank you for asking)
I'm basically an awful (fiction) writer (and I always have trouble writing ENOUGH) so I'm doing this to try and fix that problem. I'm a perfectionist, but having such a strict deadline will help me get over that XD It doesn't help that I procrastinate madly (for instance, the three projects due in the next three days! *whistles cheerfully*)
I'm writing an appropriately cheesy action-adventure, Sword & Sorcery fantasy novel, mood heavily stolen from Slayers and some character ideas stolen from Broken Sky.
I have a world (30 Days of Worldbuilding = excellent guide) and characters (and character designs), and a paper-thin idea for a sort of overreaching plot, and I figure that's pretty good XD My character's don't really have names yet though, which could be bad...

I also managed to get one of my RL friends to sign up as well, and she's really running with it. I swear, she'll practically kill herself to make the 50k limit (she's one of those rather masochistic overachievers. 5 AP classes. 'Nuff said.) @_@ It's certainly nice to have someone to bounce your ideas off of, and she'll probably beat me into the ground if I try and quit, so that's probably a good thing XD

Okay, things are getting serious. I've downloaded my NaNo icons. No turning back now.

This is my first year. No, I have no plot or characters. Am I a masochist? Yes.

I'm kicking around some ideas. I started plotting a novel last summer and did quite a bit of character work but lost interest. If I was smart, I'd go back to it, but because the premise is based on a painful event in my life, I'm not sure if I want to revisit it right now. However, I think it's got real promise.

Or, I could write an epic lesbian vampire romance. That sounds intriguing and fantastic, but I've never written fantasy before and I think it would be difficult to get myself into the groove.

I am loving the fevered pitch of excitement in this community. Can't wait to see what everyone's going to do.

Must go brainstorm now.

I figured I might post this, as it's something that's been running through my mind as the time inches toward midnight on Sunday. Feel free to add your own, as I think it might be an amusing topic.
