Hi, I was wondering if NaNoWriMo has to be one (relatively) continuous plotline, or if't just kinda *supposed* to be, but you can include other stuff?

I was wondering cause I sat down and wrote a story (fanfiction) last night which is in the same fandom as my nanofic, but takes place in a completely seperate timeline, way too far in the future for it to fit into my NaNofic, and different characters. But both it and my NaNoWriMo fic take place in the "Transformers" univers. (like I said before, I'm writing fanfiction for WriMo.) Can I still include it as NaNoWriMo fiction, or does it have to be somewhere in the time span of the story I'm writing for WriMo?

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you can find a place for it to fit in your NaNo then it can be counted as NaNo... otherwise Idk, no one would know if you did that, but it's more fun to write one story and just count that one (for me, anyway)

You're still writing, so I think it counts. It all depends though on how you feel about it. Nano isn't so much about winning as it is about writing. If you're happy keeping both, why not?

I don't think there's a rule against it, but this is my first year soooo, I dunno.

It's your NaNo, it can be whatever you want it to be. In my case, I'm trying to write every day. Fanfiction, existing original fic, or new fic, ANYTHING. As long as it's fiction and not homework, I'm counting it.

My goal for this year's NaNo is to get back into the habit of writing every day. With three jobs and a full classload, I didn't want to commit to any quantity, especially after falling short the past two years. So for me to succeed, I just have to write every day.

I'm exactly the same, trying to write every day (and finish some old WIPs and planned stories) rather than reaching a specific wordcount goal. It'd be nice to hit 50,000 words, but I think the point of NaNo is to be productive, not to strictly follow rules.

I am doing something similar... Writing what will be a story within a story. The fantasy story will be incorporated as a book my main character is reading. Possibly as a way to kill time within the story and help with continuity. And it helps me get my fantasy fix while writing something slightly more serious.

I am guilty of "And then Pippa fell asleep and her desk and had a very strange dream... blah blah insert other stuff here".

I am ashamed.

I'm counting all my writing in November in my wordcount. I need all the help I can get. :) After all it's your NaNo! Do whatever you want with it!

I'm thinking about doing this. Doing Nano has me wanting to write all those little not-related at all short stories I've been putting off for awhile...I figure I might as well write them and count them as my Nano, since my main story doesn't look like it's going anywhere by itself.

According to the website:

Write a novel. We define a novel as a lengthy work of fiction. If you consider the book you're writing a novel, we consider it a novel too!

On the other hand, I doubt the NaNo police are going to break down your door and arrest you if you don't follow the "rules" (they're really more like guidelines) exactly. :)

I'm working on a Doctor Who/Eva fic and managing to stick to the plot so far, but if I get stuck my plan is to write a 'season teaser trailer' and write out scenes for the ideas I have in mind for future parts of the story.

Either that, or I'll be inserting flashbacks to earlier points in Asuka and Shinji's lives prior to meeting the Doctor, which will have some bearing on events in the present.

Both methods are at least a way to keep me writing and adding to my word count, while still remaining on topic at the same time. If, in the long run, it turns out to be unnecessary to the fic as a whole, then I can edit in December. ;)

Count it all! You don't know what your novel is going to be about until it's done. This isn't called the Discovery Draft for nothing! And throwing anything out that you wrote is editing. You're not allowed to do that this month!
