Attack of the plot bunny! I had a plot all worked out and began to work on it but another bunny bounced its way up and pounded me on the nose with boxing gloves on. So my question is, does anyone know of any book or site about Mythology? One where you can be sure of the accuracy of information.

oh, howdy all!
I thought it might be nice, since everyone in the nanointothenight sprints room was getting all chummy with one another, we could have a miniature friending meme, since OMG THOSE TEXT BOXES FLY PAST WHEN IT IS AT MAX CAPACITY.

Down with floors, hooray team quail (and team king kong), also OMG MOD FONT.

So, let's all, I dunno. Post our favourite sentence from the nanos we sprinted last night, as well as our favorite in-chat moment so we can find eachother!

OK, so last night I had some really cracked out dreams, which my brain was trying to capture into novel form. Yup, I'd wake up and suddenly realize I was "trying to type" something in my brain.

And, I was having these crazy in between awake/sleep experiences where I was trying to type some story.

Sad thing is, none of it had to do with my NaNo and I couldn't for the life of me remember what I was "trying to type" in my brain, but I would wake up and recall that I was trying to write a story.

What the hell! It was only the 2nd night....I have a feeling this is only going to get worse haha.

Have any of you had dreams yet? And those of you who have done it before, how bad does it get?! I'm a little nervous hahaha

Does anyone else find themselves being more verbose in their daily lives during NaNo? For example, I just finished writing an essay for my world history exam, and when I went to read it over again, I realized that I was using three words where I could use one, and things like that. Does that happen to anyone else? I just thought it was interesting lol.

Is anyone else struggling with a diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder and trying to do NaNo? How about completely paralyzed by plot holes? I was stuck on a particular part of my novel last night so when I went to bed I made the mistake of talking about it with MY STUPID HUSBAND, hoping he would help talk me through it. Instead (completely unintentionally, I know... he doesn't quite get that NaNo is supposed to be quantity over quality) he pointed out all of my OTHER plot holes.

Now that anxiety disorder is kicking in, the same one that makes all other decisions impossible, and I'm really struggling to write a single word.

What do you do to get past it?

It's posted on my journal. As it pertains to characterization I thought I'd let everyone know just in case you're interested. Titled "Rant on Silly female characters who bow to the will of men."

is it really terrible just to be writing a series of short stories? or should I ditch that and go for the novel?

This is my first Nano and to make it harder I haven't written anything in years. So far I've just been trying to write at least the
1,666 words per day or if I can, an even 2,000. But no more than that because I have a lot of colleage work that I need to finish. Anyway it makes me nervous to see that some people are writing 4,000 or more words per day. So I just wondered is anyone else only writing the minimal 1,666?

Quote help

I'm stuck at work, plot bunnies are biting, and Google is not my friend so I'm appealing to the collective wisdom.

I need a quote - possibly to use part thereof as a chapter or story title, mainly because the inspiration demands it - that represents/describes/something like that an unlikely couple, like the two people in the world *least* likely to get together (which probably makes it cliched that they do but nevermind that now, December is for editing right?).

I'll take anything you've got, actual quotes, websites of quotes, anything at all because this stupid little thing is blocking my inspiration and that drives me crazy (ier) very quickly ^^

Thanks in advance,

Eve.

PS: already tried writing [insert nifty quote here], the Muses would not allow it

Alright, so.

Say that you're a normal college aged guy who plays baseball in his spare time. One day you and another guy are attacked by some kind monster in an old house full of random crap. You've already smashed a very ugly gnome lamp over the monster's head to stun the thing, but before you reach the front door, it gathers its wits and comes back after you. It grabs the other guy and starts dragging him back into the main part of the house. You, being a stand up guy, decide to not run for your life, but instead move to attack the monster again to get it away from the other guy.

The monster is sort-of man shaped, but with reptilian features. It has scales for skin and a really big, muscular tail with a sharp bone hook at the end. It is very strong and has the intelligence of a human. It can use its tail as a weapon.

You, on the other hand, have nothing but your hands. The room you're in is fully of random antique crap, but you don't exactly have the time to sort through all of the stuff. The first thing you grab needs to be a weapon you can use on the monster, either to disable or kill it.

What do you pick up?

eta: You guys are wonderful, thank you!! I think I got the fight scene all worked out now, such a relief. y'all are awesome!*

*and fierce! geez, I would not want to get into a brawl with any of you guys, seriously. XD

Previous to this year's NaNo, all of my novels took place in cities that definitely weren't mine (Portland, OR). Now that I've moved to Los Angeles, I'm writing a novel set in Portland.

Does anybody else write novels set in their hometowns? If no, why not? If yes, do you leave names of places/streets the same, or do you change them?

Alternately, is anyone else as crazy as I am and trying to go for 100K this NaNo?

OK, so my boyfriend has to have surgery on Friday.  I don't think I can write.  I was doing very well, but this has thrown me off entirely.  How ould you handle this in regards to NaNo?

What I was thinking was taking a week off and starting again next Tuesday, when things will have calmed down a bit and if need be, extend NaNo into December for the amount of days I miss.

Do you have a specific playlist for your novel? What kind of music are you listening to?

Right now, about half of my novel is centered around one character's journey away from her home, and one half is centered around preparations for the other character's wedding trial (it's a fantasy/fairytale novel, and princes get to compete for her favor). For the "journey" part of the novel, I have a playlist with a lot of bluegrass, blues, and folk songs about leaving home, rambling all over the world, and what have you, and that gets me in the mood to write about taking a journey through different lands. But I don't really have any music that inspires me to write about palaces, princesses, courtly intrigue, or magic, and I'm concentrating a lot more on my character taking a journey as a result.

Can anyone recommend some good music for such things? (Also, perhaps this should be an open post for people who use music as inspiration--post what you're looking for, and see if anyone has recs...)

Anyone ever had this happen? I had a perfectly viable plot and we had the notes for it. We had written over 3000 words of it and I even posted my first excerpt here.

Something else came along and we wrote over 11K words on it in ONE DAY. Furthermore, the something which triggered the writing jag shows no signs of drying up. While we're really attached to what we were doing, we're wondering if we shouldn't allow the thing to derail and follow the hijacked novel wherever it leads. It's not even the same genre, world, setting, or characters.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Caffeine?

Thanks for all the great responses to my last post! <3 It's so much fun hearing others' thoughts. This is a great experience and I'm so glad I'm doing it!

Just had a quick question: are there any other people on here who write for a living (any kind of writing) and who are doing NaNo?

I'm a reporter, and I usually churn out two or so stories a day, but am doing more this week due to municipal elections. It's both wonderfully and terribly distracting, I keep finding myself wanting to write NaNo instead of, well, work.

My giant cloud monsters are way more interesting than the uncontested mayor's race in the next town over. Sorry mayor, but it's true.

If there is anybody else here doing this, how are you handling the massive amounts of writing per day without getting burned out?

I've just had a look at my chapter lenghts. My longest is 1667 words long (wow, coincidence? anyway.) but the shorted I just finsihed mere 600. Which, to be fair, shocked me a bit. Does that even count as a chapter?

How long are your chapers on average?

And how many words make a chapter anyway?

I'm doing pretty well in terms of my word count, but what's troubling me is the fact that the story is further along than I think it ought to be for this number of words and/or pages. I'm not "slow playing" it, as they say in poker.

So my current fear is, I'll get to 40K or so and the story will just be OVER.

Or even if I make it to 50K, that will be the end. 50K is NOT a novel. It's a novella. This isn't National Novella Writing Month dammit.

Another reason for my concern is that I've been writing novellas in the last six month for sort of practice (and enjoyment). They've all seemed to come to an end on their own accord at around 60 pages. Four of them like that.

What do I do?? I need to stretch this out!!!

/freak out

I hate my novel. My characters keep gushing out their feelings on topics like a bunch of sappy drunks sitting around saying, "I love you, man. No really.. IDK, my BFF YOU!!! You are the light in my sad little world. Let's always be friends, kay? No, really, pinky swear on it!!!!" I have a sudden fear that they'll burst into the Barney song soon.
